Ok so I have been a member of the dollars for a couple of month now i think but am still unsure on how to tell people about it.. the way i explain it is that its an online community based on the concept from an anime ...

So my question is How have you explained the dollars to the people in your life and what did they think about it?

I've told people it's an online community based off an anime and it sure as hell isn't a fansite. Their reaction was ----> o_ 0 hmm..maybe I'll join! XD

I would tell them the absolute truth that the dollars are an internet anti gang.

I would say, "the Dollars are another average internet group with not much direction. Except there are a lot less trolls, they actually want to help eachother out, and you can have serious conversations with some people. And that's why it's awesome".

I try to tell them what we about rather than our origins. It is best to try to avoid prejudgements. So I go with "we are the dollars....(Insert beliefs on what the dollars stand for here)"

I haven't had to yet... But it's only a matter of time before someone asks. I imagine it will sound something like this:

"The Dollars is a group of people with no real rules. However, many of the members are bent on improving the world we live in, in some shape or form. Or even just helping out another Dollar in need."

Just the basic rundown. This way, nobody gets the impression it's some silly kid thing. There are several members on this site that are VERY active in working towards a better world. I'd like to be talking up those points to people.

I really don't tell people. When people see me they generally look at the URL and look it up themselves.

My whole family are otakus... so we all watched Durarara together, and they my parents are dollars XP It's pretty cool, even though they almost never use the site

some of my friends are dollars because of me. but with other people, i dont really say anything about it. i just say its top secret and give them a creepy smile XD

they ask about the dollars....i never respond....

I show our about page, mention that it requires common sense to be accepted, remind them not to shout it from the rooftops, and have them read the FAQ. At least, when I'm the one introducing them. The ones that find their way here on their own get the typical "You're finally here! Welcome, and be careful where you post" from me.

i just say it's a kind of secret organization. *shrugs* there are two other dollars in my town but one person i dont know. so the dollars aren't really known here.

I tell them its the most positive gang in the world, I tell them about some of our missions, and our motto. I tell them all about what we stand for

I've only really told it to my friends savy, she thought it was some sort of cult at first (which made me LOL) but after I told her what we do she thought it was a great idea

I have only told people who were already into the anime and the ones who I know would understand the ideals. So just look for people you know who would understand, not so much explaining that way.

I actually haven't told anyone about my membership in the dollars. Well, except one person who watches drrr (but just treats this place like a fansite. NGHFFFH)I haven't really told anyone because I feel like I don't need to tell anyone. I don't want to tell anyone. This is my safe haven where I can state my opinion without being judged by people I know. That;s all really.

But if I was to explain my membership here, I would not mention the anime at all. A lot of people have some weird stereotypes associated with anime, and whenever I tell someone I like to watch anime I just can't tell what's going on inside there. So I don't like to mention it.

Finally, I like being a member because of the anonymity. This is more of a personal point but I just prefer being silent about it. I would'[t want everyone and their mother to be able to point me out as a member.

It's my necessity so don't bother destroy it. Or I'll reap you apart.

Dollars (my definition): a smaller online activist group kind of similar to the anon's but somewhat better in many ways though somewhat worse in many other ways

If they came here, they would tell me that every opinion and fact I state is wrong. If I told them about this site, they would not understand what this place means to me. Yea, I've had arguments with people here, but they listened and had a legitimate reason to say what they said. I can' be myself around those people, but I can be myself here because the people here understand and are more likely to agree. So, I keep it to myself. I was told this was a site I should join, and Anubis bugged me constantly to join. I agree about the whole paranoia with posting topic just because friends are on the site. I have to abstain from certain topics because of it.

I usually only tell people who really get me about it, and the conversation and explanations usually just flow naturally. My boyfriend has been wanting to join, and I don't think I'd stop posting or only post on certain topics for fear of what he or any of my other friends would think of me. 1) Yeah, we don't do a whole lot. We're a bunch of randoms on the internet, and most of us won't share personal information. We're not gunna be launching political bouts with only a handful of truly dedicated people.

2) All that's been up here (for a little under a month now) hasn't been anything neat.

3) Anybody who's been around longer than that will see what REALLY happens back here. For example, I've been working (albeit slowly, because I'm a lazy prick), with another member as they move along the research/testing/presentation phase of a water purification process. The uses of this process are ridiculously awesome, for hundreds of reasons.

I've helped BambiSama out with a personal project (btw Bambi, you should email me and let me know whatsup with that. I'm curious :P) from one of the boards.

Shortly here I'll be helping Thiamor with one of his projects by being a tester.

I also take part in several of the smaller missions. I've had several people come up to me personally about them, who then gave thanks. Not to mention some of the people that I help out privately with things such as the Butterfly Project.

No, I feel my family wouldn't understand. I want to though, I feel if they did understand they would be kinda proud of us and what we do.

Well to be quite frank, I tell them it's a "gang" but for the good. Usually my friends know what the Dollars are as most of them are anime savvy, but it's fun when the few who don't jump back thinking i'm a triad or yakuza. The expressions are priceless.

I got a few of my friends interested in it but they lost interest and havent come here often

I haven't gone up and told anyone about it, but I have been asked about it once. I told them that the Dollars was an online information brokering group that houses anonymity and unorganization.

I have but they turned it around as a joke and lagged at the whole thing.

I generally only explain it to people that I want to invite, and I generally invite them by sending them a message that says:

"'The world isn't as bad as you think' -the Dollars
dollars-bbs.org (pass: baccano)"

Then if they ask for more information, I say something along the lines of:

"It's hard to explain. It's a group that meets online because our members are all over the world, but it isn't an online group. As a group we are relatively invisible, there is no hierarchy of power, and everyone involved has their own reason for being there. Our motto is "the world isn't as bad as you think" and we try to do things to make our motto true. We also share a lot of information on various topics. Ultimately, we are whatever we make ourselves."

So far, it has gotten people curious, at least, but only one has actually told me afterward that he joined. Whether the others did or not, I don't know.

I don't really think there's ever been a reason to tell people you're part of the dollars, kinda like in the anime if someone asks you have no reason not to tell them but it's not like it's some secret club or anything. Besides our membership is so widespread and thinned out that it really wouldn't matter.

I asked if they would like to join the dollars. Then they asked what it was and I told them it was a "gang" off an anime which is a non violent gang in real life. then they asked what you do and i explained their was a website and we help eachother and just talk about random things and they just said yes.

It's the same for me, but at the same time I've never really mentioned the dollars to anyone because it never seems to be something you would just bring up in everyday convo.

Usually I just say it's an invisible gang based off an anime. They operate through media and the internet.

I say it how they do in the manga/anime. A place where you don't do much. As if it were real (not saying that it isn't). When I bring up that the Dollars are an actual gang friends always ask me "Woah! Have you been in any fights?!". I kinda don't know how to respond to it at first cause- the Dollars did sorta have a huge breakout with the yellow scarves? Well at least in the manga/anime.
