Also, couldn't this have just gone in the SOPA thread? lol.. owell..

I think it's fine where it is. Im not too happy that they chose tonight to do it, as I have two papers due tomorrow. Oh, well.

>>5 You fail for using Wikipedia on an essay.

9 Name: sleepology : 2012-01-17 23:36 ID:JtpIZECZ [Del]

>>8 this.
Wikipedia is a dangerous source anyways.

10 Name: MKOLLER !YYk5m0jo12 : 2012-01-17 23:37 ID:IL/P89/t [Del]

I will admit, it's useful to find References but so is Google.

11 Name: Ash : 2012-01-17 23:39 ID:yiSMykBG [Del]

Google is supporting, if you haven't seen that yet

12 Name: King Dude !zXqFpoplY6 : 2012-01-17 23:40 ID:MOniiH6c [Del]

>>9 Actually it's not as dangerous as people may think. Believe it or not there are smart honest people out there editing Wikipedia. Besides, dumb folk tend to vacate the educational area so unless you get spam attacked you're about %97 safe.

13 Name: Umbra Serpens !T1rQ1UNnww : 2012-01-17 23:40 ID:TzE2UXLq [Del]

>>8 It's given me quality grades for years. I don't see the problem.

14 Name: MKOLLER !YYk5m0jo12 : 2012-01-17 23:47 ID:IL/P89/t [Del]

>>13 Because Wikipedia, and Google, share the same thing: inability to be foolproof. For Wikipedia, they will lead you right 99 times out of 100. That hundredth time will surprise you. Therefore, always made sure an article has references, and use the references before using the article.

As for Google, they are supporting the movement because they are being accused of piracy themselves. But read this:

"They don't support piracy. They just show results from around the Internet for what you searched. They are trying to get better at filtering out those results, but the pirates are getting better at defeating them."

Their mission is "Don't be evil." That's written in their business code of ethics. But even they aren't foolproof. There is pirated content in Google's searches, and due to the enormity of their share in the internet, there always will be.

Just some things to think about.

BTW, that quote was from a Bloomberg user.

It doesn't matter either way, it's censorship

17 Name: Anonymous : 2012-01-17 23:51 ID:0MHv60N/ [Del]

I thought this was a discussion about freedom and rights being taken away in the U.S.A not education...Which is equally important. Doesn't matter to me though since I live in Canada! I sense......Migration happening?

I always check other sources to make sure I'm not using complete BS, but as long as I verify, I use Wiki for most essays and Google for everything else. As for piracy? I try to avoid Internet theft, but if I can't buy a song from iTunes, I'm gonna rip it from YouTube.

21 Name: Niro_C : 2012-01-17 23:54 ID:jV2jHmGF [Del]

>>17 I sense a migration too. I also sense a riot that will tear this country asunder.

>>20 I do the same thing (except I use AmazonMP3 because Fuck iTunes). Anyway, Google may be blacked out but you can still use it for your paper tonight.

>>21 Trust me, there are plenty of things that will act as catalysts in the coming months.

24 Name: Niro_C : 2012-01-18 00:34 ID:jV2jHmGF [Del]

>>23 I know. This will be the first catalyst. Then we will have a dictator as president. And who knows maybe our school system will be like battle royale. You know random students marooned on a island and where they kill each other off to survive. If that stats happening, I am catching the next flight to Australia.

I can barely imagine the uproar and public anxiety this thing is gonna cause, well, better hide in my house with some guns, the apocalypse is nearing us boys and gals, let's hope some Dollars can live through to keep our legacy strong! XD

I was just looking up something on the wiki, and when it blacked out and read the page about why it did it, I couldn't help but smile. It's beautiful to see people stand up and fight injustice, nothing is more inspiring than that.

So far, Google's put a censor bar over their logo, Wiki's main page has a blackout sign (although mobile seems to work fine), and I saw something about it on Tumblr before my phone refreshed to the mobile version. What other major sites have you noticed taking part today?

36 Name: reN/Ard : 2012-01-18 12:24 ID:SyBo0OVF [Del]

i saw taste of awesome and it's associated websites with the black bar on them

Looks like reddit is down too, with a bar at the top that shows other sites that are fighting, including Craigslist.

SOPA is totally gonna pass... that is my opinion. I hope I am wrong, but really, those involved in the legislation don't give a shit. The money they are receiving for this has their attention and petitions and the online protests we have seen today will do little to get them to hear the voices of the people.

The Government can't LEGALLY take rights if it's against the Constitution. So when they try, riots will happen.

The SOPA is not right,I'm pretty sure we all agree on that so therefore we are all on the same page as I assume. But for now what should we do that would prevent this SOPA?
