Are we afraid to use the main board? (39)

1 Name: gridlock !JyJ4Lw0YTI : 2011-12-22 22:39 ID:yVgXrhdq [Del]

I spent some time looking through the threads of the random and main board and a thought hit me: Are we all afraid to post actual topics of discussion on the main board? I can understand why one would enjoy posting on the random board, but there are some things that can and should be put on the main board as they are actual topics of discussion. I feel that the main board is not living up to its fullest potential as now it is an unwritten taboo to post anything on the main board. Are we worried of potential flames and cuss-outs, to the point of not posting actual topics of discussion on the main board?

Bump

3 Name: Takara!E7th54kZFw!!XI8GEi6V : 2011-12-23 01:16 ID:GT9vSQ42 [Del]

This is a good point. We should make this a topic of discussion!

4 Name: Kon : 2011-12-23 01:22 ID:JQpEDY3A [Del]

Yup, not to mention all the diff index threads, as well as stuff that gets bumped... only to be bumped, bump it once, ok, but if you have nothing to add to it, should it be here? since there's hardly one or two actual discussion threads on here at any one time.

5 Name: CupCakes !!/d0h1Nm4 : 2011-12-23 01:26 ID:+AH9+Raq [Del]

I don't think people are afraid, more like, just making sure that where the post should go, is where it goes.
Threads are bump-ed to help show people where things go.

I feel like main is a waste of time, at least usually. There are so many people who are new and don't read the rules and just post whatever here and there. So many people post actual topics of discussion on Random simply because there are less of them there.

8 Name: gridlock !JyJ4Lw0YTI : 2011-12-23 17:14 ID:C7GkMAAw [Del]

>>7 which is what actually upsets me... the main board is now reduced to an easy way to cuss out new members who can't read directions

9 Name: Thiamor !yZIDc0XLZY : 2011-12-23 17:22 ID:ewKPtWiG [Del]

Here is another person who soon will be sticking up for those idiots who can't read. You act like it hasn't helped. It's helped a lot, quicker.

10 Name: Michuo : 2011-12-23 17:29 ID:j81o5rAD [Del]

I'm afraid to post in the main board because I'm afraid people will yell at me, which is why I post in peoples threads, and not make any....

11 Name: Weems !mcKHokXXuA : 2011-12-23 17:30 ID:euPQVgc4 [Del]

Cussing out newbies helps alot. I mean, when I joined I got cussed out. And it helped. I usually try to be polite first, but after the 10 fucking thread about kingdom hearts or bleach pops up, I'm just like fuck it. I'm part the problem because half the time I don't bother posting a correction because its always the same thing. So yeah Main is one of the main places that new members get cussed out. But If they were to read what is literally the first line on the fucking website they would hopefully be a bit more careful.

...Sorry just needed to rant.

12 Name: Ayanavi : 2011-12-23 17:40 ID:Twe18EnT [Del]

Main is a place of actual topics of discussion, this is true.
It's also where most newbie hate happens, this is also true.

When things get bumped, people generally try to bump actual topics of discussion up a long with the index and FAQ and what not, so its not like they just get drowned under the presence of newbie helpers (which they all ignore...).

I'd love to see more actual topics of discussion posted on it, but Random is pretty much their unofficial home just as Main is their official home.

It should be blatantly obvious, but I'll state it anyway - It's better to get yelled at about something so you can learn and know better next time, then to never contribute at all. Getting scolded isn't to drive you off, its to get you used to what goes where.

If it does drive you off, then you will never be missed. By anyone.

Ever.

>>13 No, not really. How long have you been here? There are plenty of good things that go on main. They just get buried under the stupid-as-fuck noob posts and the saged shit.

15 Name: Collect3 : 2011-12-24 16:42 ID:jAdMEHCF [Del]

i know what you mean i dont even think about posting on the main and i think this is an okay dicussion so i will bump

>>14 I'm not saying that there's no good stuff in Main, I just feel that there could be soo much more good stuff if people had the balls to post real discussion on Main rather than barfing it out on random.

>>16 idiot main is for more informative shit i actually think 60% of what have been on main shouldnt be there still but i let it slide, cuz people discuss on it..

Main is for things that need action or actual attention on, and of course holidays we can get fru fru here and there but. Dont let more people post useless shit

i think you have a point gridlock i mean ive learned you dont even think about the main board unless your gunna comment or somthing and alot of members consider it no mans land but some noobs block out alot of good discussions i belive if you were to go on view all threads you would see alot of noob posts

Quit jumping to conclusions >:T

Gridlock brings up a valid point, but Ayanavi addressed it fairly thoroughly (>>12).

It really is a matter of people being too afraid to post anything here. A lot of people assume the "cuss-outs" are baseless and simply due to mean people that live in caves located off to the side of the main board, waiting for hapless members to stumble upon it so they can get their daily dose of trolling for the day.

Well, they aren't. And the sheer influx of stupidity we get does not help that appearance at all.

I like to see the flaming that happens here as a rite of initiation. As Navi puts it, the ones who don't have the 'nads to learn from their mistakes and simply move passed it tend to leave, and I don't miss them one bit. It's like a filtering system. It can be perceived as mean, but then, do you really want every single dumbass to stay here, lowering the standard of the community by sheer existence alone?

I do wish main had more pertinent discussions. We do get them still, you know. As Forte said, they get buried under the constant stream of bullshit, but we can always do our best to keep them bumped, if only to make our front page presentable.

I agree. There are moons that don't post things where they're not exactly soposed to go, but I don't think they need to be continuously cussed out. They're new, and they need to be taught the ropes, not scared away. I thoughts we were all soposed to work together to help the world, not scare our own members...

>>23 Your kinda missing the point of this discussion, which is the lack of real discussion on Main. This has nothing to do with being polite to newbies. Being polite to newbies is an independent choice

TBH im just going to say Ayanavi killed it in >>12 like he usually does. I want to put forward a vote to let this die now.

I kind of feel like gridlock is being shouldered around here, so I'd like to say that I do agree with him/her.

While Main hasn't really lost its purpose, one entire facet of its existence is somewhat ignored - That being the actual topics of discussion. While we do get some, by far it seems to crop up elsewhere and the cause very likely is that the makers are somewhat afraid of being fussed out.

Well, that and we've gotten used to Random ironically having less idiots in it.

All of the above has been said before in this thread, I'm just reiterating it. One to sum it up for current readers, and two to appease my conscious in letting gridlock know that he brings up a valid point and we are thinking about it and/or agree with it.

Moving from there, what exactly do we propose to do about this? I don't feel entirely comfortable trying to redirect the conversations held in Random to Main - Though that is an option for us.

I for one do not think that encouraging members to post actual conversation on Main would increase the amount of stupid things that get put here daily by any noticeable amount.

Things like Gay Marriage, Evolution, and that thing that makes Misuto cry would have been perfect for posting on Main.

So I suppose... In conclusion, though I dislike the idea somewhat, we should start steering "Actual topics of discussion" that crop up in Random back to Main?

Irony - It's when you spend half a year telling people to stop posting their bullshit in Main, only to turn around and have to start telling people to stop posting their intellectual conversations in Random.

But... Well, if we're going to go the distance to keep shit out of Main, I suppose we should do the full job and try to direct quality content into it.

The only thing we need to really decide before doing this is what threads to keep bumped. IE: The FAQ, Texting/Email threads. We can possibly make some consolidated threads that merges together the general points of other ones that don't specifically require an entire thread, just so we can save some floor space on Main for said topics of conversation.

Thoughts in this regard?

All those in favor, please respond with the affirmative "aye"

All those opposed, please respond with the negative "nay"

Aye

I have to say, while I was kinda wondering whether I should attack this for being irrelevant, I find this is actually a valid point and interesting. While I don't necessarily agree or disagree with GRIDLOCK, I do agree with AYANAVI. However, I don't think Gridlock was wrong in raising this concern. I put in my input, and I hope I wasn't one of the ones that was seen as "shouldering gridlock around"

Ayanavi always words things magnificently.

Fuck, I am tired.

aye i agree with Ayanavi

Not afraid to post anything in the Main, I just don't have anything on my mind that *affects* the Dollars that hasn't been said already. Which is basically what the Main is for; current events that affect the Dollars.
