The chatroom isn't all bad. (73)

1 Name: ChaCha : 2011-11-29 18:19 ID:AvZ+RQjy [Del]

I just thought I'd offer a different perspective on the chat versus forums debate.

In the past, I have had a tendency to avoid the forums, largely because of how...angry, I suppose, the conversation can often get. Mind you, I would read the boards all the time. I just wouldn't post, because I didn't want to get involved. I also have social phobia. Thus, I'm really very shy and prefer to be a spectator more often than not.

That said, I'm considerably more comfortable in the chat. It might be because there are fewer people reading what I have to say, and it might be because I always host my own room and therefore have more control over my environment. Or it might be something completely different. Who knows.

My point is that different people are more comfortable sharing ideas in different environments. Having the choice between the chat and the forums helps to accommodate these different kinds of people. All the better to make new members feel at home, I think.

Unfortunately, there are unpleasant people in both areas that we can't do very much about. That, however, is a topic for another thread.

Thanks for taking the time to read.

You make a very good point, let me just finish getting all these sex RPers and actiontexters out of the foru-

...Oh wait.
---------

Not everyone in the chats are a terrible blight upon humanity that should be purged with fire, I agree. Your existence and how you've logically defended yourself here is proof of that.

You are not the kind of person that is being referred to when the people in chat are called stupid. Childish. Idiotic. Immature. Cancerous blights of humanity that should be purged with fire. And all manner of other things.

The sex RPers, to a lesser extent - The really hardcore *actionstar* kind of people. The assholes who flame out new chatters simply because they logged in and aren't part of the group... These are the people the comments are aimed at, and these are the people who garner hate.

Where as the forum has groups of people who actively try to welcome new members, and destroy all manner of misplaced/duplicate threads and trolls - The chatroom... Doesn't. The community in chat has apparently taken the approach of just ignoring the cancerous growth in them, rather than attempting to get rid of it by voicing their disapproval.

There in lies the major difference between the two areas. BBS forums' community moderated itself for almost a year and refused to stand for these things - The chatroom... Well, it used to. But when the old chatroom community moved to the forums, the new one didn't pick up the slack.

Now you have rampant hate towards the chatrooms.

>>2 I agree. Please don't misunderstand. I'm not in any way condoning the behavior that goes on in many rooms of the chat. I'm just about as frustrated with it as the next person.

What many people seem to neglect is that while, yes, sex RP is rampant in the chats, and yes, they can be exceptionally rude to newcomers, these rooms are usually very easy to spot and entirely avoidable. If you happen to stumble into a rude RP room, you are completely capable of stumbling right back out.

There are plenty of intelligent, courteous, and entertaining people that frequent the chats. I have the pleasure of knowing many of them. It troubles me that while you may not personally do so, many people tend to lump them in with the sex RPers and the trolls and the thoughtless weaboos.
It is entirely possible to go into the chats and have yourself both an intelligent conversation and a roaring good time.

On the other hand...
"The community in chat has apparently taken the approach of just ignoring the cancerous growth in them, rather than attempting to get rid of it by voicing their disapproval."

Trust me when I say that I constantly discourage the less than homely behavior and have made countless attempts to reason with the ones responsible. It just isn't happening this way, and I'd appreciate any help or suggestions I can get. I'd be tickled pink for an opportunity to make the chat a better place.

And I do believe that's what the chat community needs. A little outside help from the forums couldn't hurt. I might be asking for a miracle, but I'd love to see the chat community improve, and the little pocket of intelligent chat users can't do it alone.

when our chatrooms come back up, a number of the forum community actually plan to try and re-occupy the BBS chats and try to actively get rid of them - So that may be what you're asking for.

To be honest, a lot of us are actually quite willing to help. However, the majority of us are pretty much under the impression that unless the people in chat actually want help - Then it's a lost cause to try and retake it, when there wouldn't be any resistance afterwards.

If you find yourself having problems or needing more people to help when the chats come back up, feel free to ask.

I really appreciate the offer. Thank you.

I was a bit distressed when I first found out about the chat's hosting issues, but now it truly does seem like the best thing that could have happened to it. I really hope this sort of chat revolution pulls through.

Gird your loins, Dollars. This could get messy.

This is currently my favorite thread on Main.

If I wasn't busy at the moment I would say more, but I greatly approve that more people are willing to help in this endeavor.

Currently girding all the loins. All of them.

I can honestly say this is one of my favorite threads as well, maybe because I can relate. It's as if you can't voice your opinion on here without an ignorant or rude person posting their commentary. Don't get me wrong, everyone has a title to their own opinion, but when your opinion is ment to attack someone.. that is just completely rude.

I completely agree with you there on the unpleasent people, ChaCha. I don't really have a social phobia, but I'm definitely not a big poster on the forums because of this.

@Aya

are you saying you guys are going to try and take back bbs chat to what it used to be once the chat is back up and running? but then again, before long things will go back to what they are now if people from 51 would rarely use the bbs chat. ill admit that 51 is pretty fucking awesome, but i think we gotta take back our "home" sooner or later.

p.s. im stealing internet from neighboring source.

17 Name: ChaCha : 2011-11-30 22:23 ID:AvZ+RQjy [Del]

Bump because nothing of particular consequence is happening on the main right now, and I'd like to get more people involved in this for when the chat does come back.

18 Name: Dainn : 2011-11-30 22:35 ID:chUu5TfR [Del]

I've always been welcoming to newbies, although I'm a little too socially nervous to give the worse members a hard time as often as I should >>

19 Name: ChaCha : 2011-11-30 23:36 ID:AvZ+RQjy [Del]

That's perfectly understandable. I was the same way at first, but eventually I managed to get over that bit of anxiety. The necessity of change grew a little too apparent for me to continue ignoring it. I'm not very well-liked by many of the chat users because of it, but the cause is worth the hate. Besides, they're not the sort of people I need hanging around me anyway, so there's no real loss.

20 Name: Ayanavi : 2011-12-01 12:43 ID:mlFXE+TF [Del]

Bringing this back before I head out for the day.

I find myself wondering how many people read this thread and all they got out of ChaCha's words were "derp, people on the forums are mean!"

Oh well, raising awareness for the people who want to get in on the retaking of the chat from the idiots. Because waging war on stupid in the forums was apparently too easy - Now we plan for a dual-fronted war.

21 Name: ChaCha : 2011-12-01 13:07 ID:1JNDg/Xm [Del]

I really hope that's not all they got out of this. Especially if they read the entire thread.

I hate to call it a "war", but it's feeling dismayingly appropriate.

I usually post in both the BBS and the chat. I do agree there needs to be changes made to the chat, there are just so many spammers and pervs. I also hate it when people join a room only to leave. It could be because they are looking for someone, but it is still annoying. It would help if each chat room could have a member list, but I don't know if that would be too much of a hassle for Reltair.

55 Name: Reltair !pAuAcC/vF2 : 2011-12-04 17:20 ID:56G6YdDN [Del]

I'm taking down the chat and linking to http://drrrchat.com/ instead. This AJAX chat doesn't really scale well and takes up too much CPU for shared hosting, so I would probably need a dedicated server to host it. Getting a dedicated server at this point is a bit too much for me, unless I put ads on Dollars BBS that end up paying for it, but it'll just be easier to only host the BBS right now. Even though this new shared server has better performance and fewer accounts per server, the chat is still hindering the BBS itself, and I think the BBS takes priority over the chat.

I might simply transfer the site back to the previous server as well since I didn't see any substantial performance gain. :/

56 Name: *insertnamehere*!!mhJDjCwh : 2011-12-04 17:20 ID:uzIWf0Ad [Del]

>>54 No, it's linked to drrrchat.com forever now. The old BBS chat took up too much CPU, even with the current server, so Reltair opted to link to that chat.

Well, good side is, no more large CPU usage, and you get to speak with people from across the world. Bad side is, well, I dunno. I don't see the bad side to it. I don't think the admin of that chat will care, it's a public chat after all.

There is so much goddamn RP and cybering happening in the chat it is sick. I stand by my previous conclusions that chat is nothing but a composition of shit-for-brains cancerous cesspool filled with puberty invoked preteens rubbing their genitals. The only advantage those fucks have in life is that they can type with one hand...

>>65 On the bright side, a couple of us try to host rooms once in a while. While we aren't necessarily in the right to drive off cybersex RPers from a public site that doesn't belong to us, we can try to provide a safe haven for non-shitty content.

This is true... I question the value of appearance and aesthetics for the price surrendering lack of control. Maybe I am just partial to an IRC chat, but I think linking Chatroomup top to something along those lines would be much better for the Dollars as a whole and benefit the community; the way I see it, the only people we are catering to/have been catering to by using a chat that looks similar to the chat on the anime are those that are a detriment to the Dollars and are cancer that would easily be filtered out by taking away the appeal of the chats appearance and adding even the slightest bit of moderation...
Something to consider. :/

68 Name: Misuto!M4ZBq07Cs. : 2011-12-05 16:22 ID:ZsM/AEWg [Del]

That's debatable and kind of controversial, though I do agree to an extent...

Nonetheless, we do have the IRC linked in places, but generally, if we don't post a chatroom, we're going to get so much bullshit on the boards when they start becoming too unresourceful to find a chatting outlet for themselves.

The only difference now is it's not our responsibility. Which is the part I'm okay with. If you do frequent the chatrooms though, look out for the rooms that we make - we'll be sure to handle the banhammer with extreme prejudice.
