Individualism vs. Collaboration (22)

1 Name: Yami : 2011-01-23 15:45 ID:lshns6j0 [Del]

This point has come up again and again, and I think it's become a moot point, so I'm going to clarify.

I've said in the past that Dollars is about individuals. People have suggested that we should move on from individualism to collaboration.

This is a misunderstanding. When I say individuals, I mean all of us working as a GROUP of individuals. That means that we're all communicating with each other and we're all working for the same cause, but we don't share our identities with each other. I'm not saying that you should work all by yourself. I am saying that everyone works by themselves, but does so as a coordinated group through close communication.

This is a key principle behind Dollars that defines who we are and how we act. If we opt to reveal identities and get to know each other IRL, we've just become every other community service group out there. Let's not even try to address the numerous problems with meeting random online people.

The Dollars is a collaboration- it's just not the collaboration you see everyday. And I know that alot of people just want to meet up and get friendly IRL. It's easy and effective. It's just not the Dollars.

Someone told me I have "preconceived ideas" about Dollars. Let's be clear: absolutely. If we want to do something completely ordinary and everyday, all we've done is detract from the ideal that the name "Dollars" stands for.

Again, there's nothing wrong with starting another group called "Dollars", but for one, I'm here to stick to the idea.

I liked this thread. Probably will spark up good conversation now, since long ago it didn't.

Okay, I'm a little confused on what you're trying to get across. I like the point you made on meeting people from websites IRL, that it's just not a good idea, but what are you ideas exactly? Just to clarify. Thanks!

>>3 I second you. o.o

"I am saying that everyone works by themselves, but does so as a coordinated group through close communication."

This I don't get... xD What I understood was we work through anonymous communication? soooo.... then what? and.... what are we working for exactly...? community service? by ourselves? D: likee pick up trash on my own or support charities on my own? How is that even dollars when I'm doing it all by myself? @.@

sorry my confusion cannot be expressed into proper words.

I think it would help me understand better if you gave out an example of what you're trying to say... or likee how do we act upon that? :D

I concur with your idea, its like we're different individuals connected to the same group with no particular chains of purposes that has been instilled for us to follow. We're the dollars and we're colorless, there's no particular leader- only a creator- and there're no rules that could bind us to reach for the sky. We create our own sky and if we just so happens to have similar skies with others, then we could collaborate with each other but it doesn't have to be meeting each other IRL. If you want to meet 'new friends' from the web IRL, you could go do that on another site.

If that was confusing, how about imagining this. A board (not anything specific or any particular game board... just imagine one), then pegs... different groups of pegs standing on the board. These pegs have their own colored groups; black, white, green, blue, red... whatever. Each standing with their own color within an area on the board. However, there are litters of transparent pegs lurking every side of the board; it could be settled with one of the other colored group of pegs or maybe not. They're just there and everywhere, but not largely collected. Dollars are like those transparent pegs. We stand amongst the crowd. We are part of the crowd, yet we are not. We are connected by being of the same transparency, yet we are our own set of individuals. So, if you join all those transparent pegs together, it wouldn't be so unique. It'll be the just like all the rest of the other colored pegs needless the lack of color in itself.

Was that still confusing? Ugh, im not really good at explanations, and my analogy good be a bit weird at times. So do pardon that.

I meant 'could' and not 'good'. Sorry.

did understand your explanation.
Your post is a statement, right?
"I´m going to clarify."
Don´t know why the others didn´t get that....
That´s the thing i like about Dollars, we are individuals spread all over the world connected by communication. not more.
We can choose if we want to show who we are RL, we can choose to be someone else I-/RL.
Right?
I like the Dollars, because I can be who I am, and also be everybody else, but i always am a part of the invisible.

I thought that a number of us from chat were meeting up at SMASH (Sydney)...?

>>7 yes, i believe so too...
>>8 well, its really up to you if you'd want to meet up with the others... though some meant when meeting each other up in conventions or any public places, they want to flag out dollars to the world; which defeats the idea of invisibility and anonymity. if you wanna meet up then meet up but there's no need for shouting it out to the world. if other people would want to join this site and ask then give them an answer, but if they don't they'll just find their own ways.

IMO, the problem with setting down ideals like that is that no one who you want to listen will... who exactly is the "controller" here? I don't see anyone deleting threads or anything. I also don't see anything stopping anyone from asking to meet IRL. That being said, I think that all the people here prefer the anonymity and I have never seen anyone have an opinion otherwise (in the time I've been here at least.)

>>12 actually there are some that has instigated the want to meet up IRL.

Anyone else have any input for this topic? I'd like to see alternate opinions.

I say, if there is a collective idea that takes effort of more than one then hey group effort is favored, but a person should not rely on the group to achieve what he wants to achieve. Collaboration is best for efficiency, but its the fruits of individual drive that motivates us to join in. I love to quote Ghandi "Be the change you want to see in others"

Being more on the introverted side myself, I don't mind collaboration so long as I have enough time to recharge :3 I like being a loner though
