To keep me Content

For today, more so than others, I have been
dancing with the current.
Dragged beneath then shoved upward
just enough so my face crests the surface.
Enough to catch a breath
before I’m brought back under the white.
My toes rake against rock,
trying to find
anything to hold me still
but instead my skin gets shaved,
eroded.

But then, every so often,
right when my lungs feel like they are
filled with broken glass,
I exit into a deep pool.
Where I float to the top, resting aimlessly
and the coolness of the water just hits me
and the noon sun aches to hold me
as I drift.
Unsure of what's below me
and knowing that there are more rapids ahead
but these moments of peace
