Depends a little on the genre.
For fantasy I would propose Sanderson as a more serious author who does good world building, or Pratchett for a more light-hearted tale.
For Science Fiction, The Martian is an interesting read though a bit technical, and Dune is a classic.
In the superhero genre, I would have to suggest Worm, though that is a webnovel.
