Showing or Telling a story (3)

1 Name: Szayne : 2017-12-14 21:35 ID:4UCtQgis [Del]

I've recently read a book called "Rhetoric of fiction" and there it discusses the difference between "telling and being told". It says that it is of utmost artistry if the third voice in storytelling (which is the author) doesn't show any intention of telling the reader of what is going on, instead, just shows what is happening and that their minds will interpret the story. But it also advertise the works of Homer which shows the complete opposite technique, it tells you which is the villain and which is not, all the characters personality, and what the situation is. Instead of telling a story, it seems that this book value more artistry into "showing" the story instead of telling.

So what do you think is the best? Showing or telling a story?

Show the story and you're offering the foundation which another could adopt. Tell the story and you're giving another the tools to build their own foundation, upon which are their own beliefs.

Whichever you prefer is the answer.
