Learning many different languages (6)

1 Name: Tenjin : 2017-04-29 23:14 ID:k1/DCDgo [Del]

Is there anyone else out there who wants to learn many different languages?

I don't know why, but I've always loved the idea of learning multiple languages. Obviously, I'm starting with Japanese, but I plan on always learning a language, so once I'm fluent in Japanese, I'll move on to another language, then another.

Is anyone else interested in this kind of thing? Just curious. I just find the idea of a group of people learning/knowing different languages interesting. Almost like a languages club, but I guess with people online?

I don't know if anyone will end up reading this, or if anyone would be interested in this, but I figured I'd throw this out there in case something becomes of it.

Learning other languages is quite fun, you learn more of other cultures and are able to talk to more people.
I dont think this is the right board for this though

TIL what the word "polyglot" means. I kind of wish there was a community for this, but it seems like something not many people would be into.

So here's the dream then: Think of like a club or group of people, who each are interested in learning multiple languages. We would meet online in like skype calls or chatrooms or something, and for starters just kind of chat and get to know each other. We would keep in contact as a group, but from there also spend time with one or two other peole, who know/are learning the same language you do, so you can help each other out or just get used to speaking in that language. Maybe as a group, there would be a set language that we would all be learning at once, maybe on the side, and figure it out together.
But even if we aren't all talking, just having someone else to talk to while studying makes it more interesting.

Ironically, I'm bad with words, or at least in English but I do like the idea of "polyglotism", that is, learning other languages, being what brings a strange group of characters together into a group of friends or club.

And in case people where wondering, I learnt Indonesian (similar to Malaysian) in high school and got to a point where I could almost speak it fluently, but after a couple of years have forgotten some. I learnt year 12 Indo in year 11, because our classes were combined, and I live in Australia, so it was the only language my school happened to teach. I wouldn't mind picking it up again, and learning more, but at the moment I'm learning Japanese.
So that's my life story in case anyone was wondering.

But real talk: Would anyone actually be interested in starting a group like this?
I'll keep checking this thread, and reply to any questions people might have.

And as for the board this belongs in, if you asked if this belongs in a literature section, the answer would be no. However, I still feel like this board suits it the most. One can't read unless they know the language, which is actually the main reason I'm learning Japanese, so that I can read it rather than understanding people speaking it.
