Understanding Context - Help (3)

1 Name: Essay : 2017-03-22 03:42 ID:PYA62UHn [Del]

Hello, for those of you who have/haven't read To Kill A Mockingbird, I have received an essay question which I don't understand.
'Discuss how the context of the novel has helped shape your understanding of the way justice is denied to a particular class or group of people'
It says to take into account the context, characterisation and language devices.
Characterisation I understand, but how the hell does context and language devices answer the question of how justice is denied?

Context shouldn't be that hard to see mate. TKAM happens in Alabama during 1936. Think about what African Americans went through during the 30s. Also, TKAM is based off the landmark legal cases of the Scottsboro Boys. That's more context.

Next, look for word choice and language devices like metaphors, analogies, similes, and irony. For instance, irony is used in Maya Angelou's 'Champion of the World' to demonstrate the racial injustices suffered by African Americans in the 20s.

I had the same, or a similar question back when I was reading this in high school.

Definitely look up what Fuji referenced. The question is also asking about YOUR understanding, so I don't really know how to help you. Forgive my faulty memory (it's been a while) but an example could be, the ostracization of the father by the people because he wanted to uphold justice for the black man. People started to doubt him and suspect him etc. Also, the faulty witness accounts could work too.

If I'm off on anything and everything I've just said doesn't match up, forgive me lol.
