Your project will grow in scope regardless, so if the original plan is humble, you will actually finish the game. It gets easier after finishing your first game.
Most people have a "dream game" in mind which tend to be of large scope. If that's your case, I suggest making a game in the same world setting. Your "dream game" will benefit from the prequel.
I also suggest not making the game alone. Teams can help you stay motivated and producing. Especially if it's someone you are already close with.
