I'm simple.
Top bun (toasted), Ketchup (don't hate me), (salt, pepper, garlic powder) patty, bottom bun (toasted).
I'm no expert but improving only one component is already an amazing start. Example: homemade buns, freshly grounded meat, etc.

For me a good burger must have:
Potato Buns
Salt
Pepper
Also agree with garlic powder
Lettuce
Three slices of Tomatoes
Thousand Island Dressing (Ketchup Relish Mayo,Tapatio hot sauce and lime as well as a beef patty.
