weekly manga suggestion thread (9)

1 Name: Calliope !PLzNxsEJrI : 2017-03-19 07:37 ID:R34RiCrr [Del]

Hey guys! I really love the Dollars community and have so much fun checking out the comics section since manga's something I really like. My main issue here though is, most of the threads that ask for suggestions tend to end up as a long list of manga titles with no real info about them that no one can never really get started on since the sheer amount of mangas reced is so intimidating. So to combat this issue, I'd like to propose a community thread where people can find quality manga suggestions in reasonable amounts. Some rules/mechanics for the thread would be like:
  • Every week, there is a new theme for the kind of mangas that will be recommended.

  • To help ensure the quality of the recommendations, each user should be limited to recommending just one manga, forcing them to consider which manga they really think is the best.

  • Each recommendation should come with an overview of the manga's genres, a brief description, and the user's personal reasons for recommending it.

  • We could start a chatroom for discussing mangas we like further and helping each other to get the most out of our reading experiences.

  • Please let me know if you're interested in this kind of thing, and feel free to leave comments and/or suggestions. I really hope a thread like this could generate some meaningful discussion about mangas and be a place where we can all share our passion for the artform together!

well you started the thread, so what's this weeks theme? Don't suggest the thread, just start it. We have no enforced rules, but we tend to have self-discipline.

Oh ok haha. Then I'll start it off I guess.
This week's theme is music manga! This category includes any manga in which music plays a major role in the story, these mangas are most often about bands and musicians.

My top recommendation for this genre is <i?Shiori Experience - Jimi na Watashi to Hen na Oji-san

Genres:drama, music, school life, comedy, supernatural

Description: Shiori was once a guitarist in a light music club in high school. But her first live performance was dashed when her brother ran away from home with a lot of debt, to become a musician in Tokyo.
A decade later, Shiori is now a high school teacher, leading a boring, uneventful life and paying off the debt... till she runs into the ghost of none other than a famous guitarist Jimi-you-know-who.
A story of a 27-year-old woman on her way to a music legend begins here.

Why I'm recommending it: I started off this manga just 'cause I wanted a laugh out of its downright weird premise, but it managed to make me take it seriously. It's very typical shonen-style in the way it presents its overall plot structure which is something I personally like as it's got a clear direction. The set-up for the whole ghost-Jimi Hendrix thing is so creative so mad props to that, yet it actually doesn't take up the majority of the story but is used, rather, as a sort of underlying motivator that helps to push the developments forward. The strength of this story, I find, is in its character development. It sets up a strong cast of characters with arcs concerning their tragic backstories ala One Piece but builds up to these extremely cathartic moments of growth that make you just wanna root for the Shiori and the band's eventual success in becoming legends. It's still ongoing with 19 scanlated chapters as I write this, but I highly recommend this for anyone wanting to have a good time with an honest-to-goodness rock band story.

RIP? Can we continue this with all forms of comics instead of just manga, because I wanted to post scott pilgrim but didn't cause it's american. Can we restart this thread?

Then make it alive again, post the genre of the week or even a day to keep it fresh and I hope everyone will join.
And because Music genre wasn't explored at all I will add my piece. My favorite manga is Kagen no Tsuki ^^ It tells a story of a woman found by a young girl in a abadoned mansion. They discover that the woman isn't a real person anymore and to release her they must find guitarist whose song is stuck in her head. The manga comes from 1999 but art and story are very well made (19 chapters).

I assume the genre is still music? In that case I recommend Teen spirit. It has nice atmosphere in the manga. I haven't read it in a while but I remember it being about a boy band and a new member?

Hmm I think ana satsujin. I recommend this because it's a bit different than usual and I love their twisted love. It's about a guy who goes to kill himself and makes a hole in the wall, through that he can see his neighbour. But one he witnesses her killing someone....
