One night, New York City became the site of a collision between worlds, when a portal to the “Alterworld” opened and surrounded the city in a thick fog. Nowadays the city is referred to as Hellsalem’s Lot, a melting pot of the paranormal, monsters, magic, and general batshit insanity. The story follows Leonardo Watch, a young photographer/pizza delivery boy with the All-Seeing Eyes of God who recently came to the city, and the crime-fighting organization called Libra he ends up joining. The original manga is by Yasuhiro Nightow, most famous for works such as Trigun, and this highly-hyped anime adaption features Rie Matsumoto in her second directorial role after her masterpiece debut Kyousougiga aired in 2013.

And you should be too! BBB (as I'll now call it for everyone's sake) could go in a number of directions, and I usually don't make threads for airing shows this early into their runs. As of this post, BBB only has two episodes out - but what spectacular episodes they are. The setting is beautiful and interesting, the characters are hammy and serious in perfect balance, and the direction...well, it's fuckin' Rie Matsumoto. Disjointed but approachable, lively, and enticing. That's her schtick and she's sticking to it, and good on her. It works wonderfully for a show like this. The soundtrack is often understated but adds a great sense of place and flair to the show when it's used, and the OP/ED pair is one of the better ones this season.

My recommendation again comes with the caveat that I don't really know where BBB is going - but if the destination is as exciting as the journey, we could have a standout of the year on our hands. For now, it's easily one of the better shows this season, and something you (yes, you - all of you) should check out. /o/

I saw the first episode and was immediately drawn in. I'd recommend everyone give it a try- even if you decide it's not exactly your thing, you have to admit what you're seeing is pretty damn good. Not many first eps catch my attention like this one did. It's got a certain vibe about it that I just love (would you be mad if I said it was my #aesthetic? haha).

I was a bit lost when I first started watching the anime because Leonardo Watch kinda just accepted the job without much questioning as to why...still dont know how i feel about it but since i am still willing to watch it i guess i like it enough!

How does this show keep getting better every single week? It's fascinating.

This anime has my laughing all the time. My favorite scene was in the second episode I think when Leonardo is delivering pizza and it's just like "hello Leonardo, let me just come out of nowhere and steal the pizza you're delivering."

I'm definetely going to start watching this anime.

Kinda hard to say.
I'm finding it really similar to Cowboy Bebop in the sense that most episodes have self-contained narratives of various genres peppered with detail that slowly build up an overarching story. Like, there's an episode about playing endurance pseudo-chess with political relations and lives on the line, there's an episode about hunting vampiric creatures, and there's one about befriending a hamburger-loving mushroom-guy-thing. It's pretty diverse.

I guess because of the episodic nature of it, you could call it a slice-of-life with a fair amount of action and supernatural elements.

Or like, Baccano + X-Men. That's kind of how I've described it to people.

BBB is pretty tricky to pin down.

I saw someone talking about the manga for this a few months ago and when I saw the anime trailer i knew it was gonna be epic. I'ts a type of anime you don't see very often and i love it so much! The ending theme dancing is great.

Watched the first three episodes and was left unfortunately underwhelmed. So far it just looks like quirky weirdness for quirky weirdness' sake, which isn't inherently bad if there were anything to actually grip my attention like some emotional weight or some meaningful stake to everything. Style is where I expected it to work on me the best, but surprisingly that's not doing much for me either.

Everywhere I look people like it and I feel like a jaded baby again.... I'll keep watching though, because sometimes I think something is nonsense but then have it grow on me so who knows. I like the Nakai character and Ishida Akira yelling and doing weird vices is always a plus.

One thing I dig is the use of music in it. I don't mean the actual tracks but how they seem like ambient/background music in the scene itself. I like that.

Also it made me laugh that in the first or second episode I was like "I've seen people casually compare this show to a number of things but how haven't I seen Trigun mentioned yet" and then found out that it's adapted from a manga by Trigun's author. I should have known! All those absolutely ridiculous sounding names are very Trigun.

The last episode comes out this week, and while I'm sad that it's going to end, I can't wait to see what happens. My favorite episodes are 10 and 10.5 because of their sheer craziness. Here's to hoping for a season 2!

Hope they make season 2 because I found this series really different and unique than most anime these last few years.

I loved Kekkai Sensen because it proved to me that there are still great anime that target an adult audience and do not explain every detail trough unnecessary exposition. More please! :p
If anybody is searching for something similar I recommend Baccano!, Kill la Kill and to some extent Cowboy Bebop.
The mangaka who wrote the original manga also did Trigun which received an anime adaption in 1998 by Madhouse.
