In an underground world where tunnels extend everywhere, even though they live in dark and confined spaces, people wear protective clothes and lead quiet and enjoyable lives. Patema, a princess in her underground village, loves to explore the tunnels. Her favorite place is a "danger zone" that her village prohibits people from entering. Even though she's scolded, Patema's curiosity can't be held back. No one ever explained what the supposed danger was. On her usual trip to the "danger zone," Patema faces unexpected events. When hidden secrets come to light, the story begins to unfold.

You should go watch this guys, the animation is good, story is good, and patema, the main heroine she is so beautiful

Ah thank you for making this thread and reminding me I wanted to watch this! It shares the same director as Time of Eve and caught my eye when I saw the trailer a while ago.

The Bluray is out so you can find it online too if you're not in one of the countries where it released in cinemas.

Just watched it. You guys should too, like seriously.

9/10 overall - fucking fabulous, tons of undertones. Really sweet. Similar feel to Spirited Away.

Animated Art 7/10. The animated character art is better in the beginning since they just edited scenes from the premade OVA, but it's still not bad through the rest of it.

Backdrops and setting art are 9/10, fabu.

Setting 10/10 TEN OUTTA TEN. Loveeee the settings of this story.

OST 10/10. The music is fucking amazing. Fits every minute of it and really hits you hard with the feels train, even when the story itself doesn't.

Characters 9/10 (the antagonist is more like 6/10 though, pretty trope'd).

Animation 9/10 (plus or minus one depending on the scene).

Story 10/10, ties right into the setting, love how it's told.

Graphics 10/10 (designs are great and damn high quality even when 480p, though I personally watched it HD).

Enjoy guys. It's def worth watching, though I don't think the art department was as thorough as they were with Time of Eve, plus some issues listed above, so I can't really give it a full 10/10.

>>8 I just watched it too, completely amazing.

I feel you on the antagonist though, I thought they were going to go deeper with him. It seemed like they were setting something up there, but it never happened until right at the end.

The music fits so well.

How different is the movie from the show/OVAs? Is it worth watching the show after you've seen the movie?

19 Name: BarabiSama !!C8QPa1Mt : 2014-05-26 16:10 ID:4lZk5RPL [Del]

>>18 The show is a collection of a few 6 minute OVA's, and it's really just the first part of the movie (up until just before the gov't finds out about Patema). They re-vamped the art when they went to do the movie but kept the same scenes, which is why the beginning of the movie seems very detail heavy on the art.

I think it's good to watch both since the anime won't take much of your time and can show the interesting details between adaptions.

The anime also shows things in a different order than the movie with slightly different words. Quick spoilers for the movie below.

For example, in the anime, Lagos is shown early on telling Patema that he was going to be gone for longer than usual and gave her the picture. She was also a child all the way through the flashback. In the movie, they didn't show that scene until later on, and he instead said that he would *never* be coming back because his dream couldn't be fulfilled. Patema also got older halfway through the flashback. That makes it seem like it's an illusion or dream (and would explain the plot hole), but the lack of the original flashback prior makes it seem canon.

This caused a few plot holes. Lagos saying that he couldn't fulfill his dreams means that he came back after Age's father died, but they show in the final version of that scene that the enforcer characters saw Lagos when they killed Age's father, which implies he was caught then and couldn't have gone back. Because of that flashback, we have to assume that he actually *wasn't* caught and went back to see the underworld one last time, but that doesn't make any sense either because the scene still showed he left with the tubes used to float Age's father's device in that flashback (which were also seen by his corpse) and means that that visit must have been before his death.

I originally thought he came back and left to get revenge, which was how he got captured, until I noticed those details.

I wish they just kept the flashback as it was in the anime or made it more obvious that it was Patema's dream. It created such an awkward plot hole imo.

I'm glad I found this.
I've already seen a movie with a similar setting but this one gave a different feeling, especially the transition when it's inverting.
Love the music too.

The film is kinda like the works of Hayao Miyazaki, nice animation, nice plot.

>>19 Spoilers below.

I just re-watched it, and unfortunately you are incorrect about the flashbacks. That flashback happens right after she talks to Porta and Gramps, just like in the anime. She lies down in her bed, and has the flashback. Lagos says he'll be longer this time, gives her the photo, etc. Thus, the dream later on is obviously a dream when she starts crying, her hair starts flying, Lagos tells her to keep holding on to him, etc. I knew as soon as she started hugging Lagos (and got older) it was likely a dream.

As for the antagonist, I think he had a little more character than you give him credit for. At first it seemed like he was pretty typical, but he actually wanted to go into the sky himself. In essence, he was just like Age, except he would go to much different ends to do it. Right at the end, when he finally got there, he just stopped and smiled. I don't know, I guess you could say that's not very complex or interesting, but during the movie he legitimately creeped me out, and had me wondering what he really wanted. I guess I think that's a pretty good character.

>>22 Okay, I somehow missed that first flashback. It's probably because I skipped around in the beginning since I'd already seen that part. Shoulda checked before ranting lol

And I see what you mean with the antagonist, but I still don't think his characterization was very solid. It would have made more sense if he was more fixated on the sky than the girl as a symbol of the sky, as the symbolism in that theory doesn't have any credit until the very end, which ruins the whole point of using it.

>>23 Spoilers, etc.

He did get quite angry when he didn't get thrust into the sky with her, though, saying something like 'Why wasn't I chosen?'. I thought that made it pretty clear he wanted to go.

Besides, he couldn't be fixated on the sky, because you saw what happened when Age just looked at it. It's totally unacceptable to even acknowledge it in this society, so he instead obsesses over everything from there. He kept all of Lagos's possessions, talks to his dead body, lives in the place closest to the sky, etc.

Also note that when he found the Inverted near the end, he had a gun and didn't shoot them, instead shooting at his bodyguard or whoever attacked him. I think this indicates he's more obsessed with them than killing them.

How in the everloving flip does the world this movie is set in supposed to work? Do they actually live on a disc world or something? Because there's no way they started on one side of the Earth and ended up on the other.

They live in a cavern underneath the Earth's surface.

The Inverted people of Aiga were the survivors of the gravity experiment. As the remaining scientists searched for a cure to the gravity inversion, they carved out an unimaginably large cavern, place the Inverted inside it, then built a city for them, along with that sky-city, which reproduces the sun, clouds, stars, etc. The key thing is the entire world of Aiga was completely man-made by the scientists. That is also why there are no animals in Aiga.

Unfortunately, they forgot about Newton's Laws during this movie, specifically the 2nd. Just noticed that the third time through and it started annoying me.

Unless their terminal velocity was just really, really low for some reason other than air resistance. I guess it's possible given their atmosphere, but I doubt it.

It was a beautiful film with a cool concept, amazing visuals in the way the film was shot, and lovable characters. However, as a sci-fi film, I personally think the whole science side was considerably empty.
Over on MAL, the viewers created explanations and even a hand drawn map to explain the science and back story of the inverted worlds. The anime community really is creative and clever. If you have seen the film, and want extra explaining, this link really helped me. http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=675465

>>32 >>33 You guys do realize this is considered a fantasy / drama / adventure, right? Just because a series mentions a scientific experiment doesn't suddenly make it sci-f.

Also, the reversal of gravity wasn't the result of the experiment - it was the result of God / mother nature, who was angry at them for even trying the experiment. Pretty sure God isn't bound by Newton's Laws.

36 Name: Orion : 2015-01-28 15:30 ID:f/4IU7D5 [Del]

When you have a film with such a cool concept, inverse gravity, imo it would be best suited as a sci-fi film. If you want to make a fantasy, set it in a world with dragons and elfs and stuff. I watched the film purely for the concept. If all the film is, is a fantasy drama, I want a new film, sci-fi based.

And >>35 does it say that God/Mother Nature caused the gravity shift in the film? Or is that speculation?

37 Name: Inuhakka !inb4CaTsQw : 2015-01-28 22:25 ID:mKaymMyo [Del]

>>35 >it was the result of God / mother nature

It was the result of the experiment working on a far greater scale than they had hoped for. They wanted to harness gravity as a form of energy. It wasn't God, it was them not understanding what changing gravity could do or how to contain it. They still did it themselves. The most likely thing that happened is they hoped to create a series of oscillations by reversing and then un-reversing gravity on a turbine or something, and then just couldn't control it, but that's speculation.

They had no explanation for the physical laws being side-stepped, fantasy or not, and they had a very accurate portrayal of gravity reversal throughout the movie otherwise so it seemed odd they would skimp on that. I watch fantasy movies and usually they don't give any scientific explanation. Spritied Away did not need to explain the mechanics of the world in detail because nothing was explained in detail. Nothing about it was realistic, but in this film the only thing fantasy about it was reversed gravity. Everything else was normal and was very realistic. That kind of situation warrants as much realism as possible, in my eyes.

38 Name: Orion : 2015-02-01 05:38 ID:f/4IU7D5 [Del]

I agree with the majority of fantasy anime, especially the Ghibli films because I really do accept them as being fantasy and magical and everything. I clearly did have the wrong impression of Patema Inverted when I went to watch it, hoping for a sci-fi and getting a fantasy/adventure.
