Makoto Tsukimoto (nicknamed Smile) is a quiet high-schooler who's been friends with the loud and energetic Yukata Hoshino (nicknamed Peco) since childhood. They're both in the local table tennis club and both have a natural talent for it, although Smile's personality always prevents him from winning against Peco. The club teacher, however, notices Smile's talent and tries to make him gain some sportive tenacity.

Before starting this anime, you should take what you think an anime should look like out the window. It's one of those shows. The art style is unusual and the animation is really out there. I that's pretty awesome and the main reason I considered watching the show.

But while it was the unusual look that got me interested, I quickly got invested in the story and its characters and went through all 5 episodes available so far in one go. It's not just a visual novelty, but so far an overall enjoyable show.

Adapted from a manga by Matsumoto Taiyou (Tekkon Kinkreet), directed by Masaaki Yuasa (The Tatami Galaxy, Kaiba). It's going to be 11 episodes long.

I haven't started this yet, but if the OP is any indication of what this show is actually like, it will be anime of the year.

>>2 Do you mean this one? Because it changes later on. But yes, it's pretty much like that, but with colors. And considerably crazier stuff at times.

I meant the newer one, yeah. Both are great though.

My friend keeps suggesting this to me. I'll have to get around to it. Some of my friends and I like sports anime, so we jokingly refer to this series as The Prince of Table Tennis.

Ep 6 packed a real emotional punch holy heck. This show!!!!

The newest episode hng ♥

Though I did notice that there was some seriously sloppy animation at some parts in this episode. I hope their budget isn't running out halfway through. Imma be pissed if we don't get a full season.

"Welcome back, hero."

aaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

I'm so sad for Wenge though. I really like him , especially after his change of heart and seeing how well he's getting along with his team. But he just can't get a break.

Do you ever get a twinge in your heart whenever in the last few episodes Smile calls Peco 'Hoshino'? Because I do.

finally started, 3 eps in for now.

And this is already easily my favorite sports anime in a really long time. I love how there's a rhythm to everything. From normal conversations to the musicality of the balls bouncing, it's got some of if not the best pacing out there this season. The facial expressions are beautiful/terrible/terribly beautiful and I wouldn't have it any other way.

OP & ED are amazing as well.

yeah this will easily be show of the season for me, just gotta catch up now.

That color fade as the match went on I'm hnnnnnng

I'm so pumped for the last episode.

Caught up. This series is so great q-q
Peco can be my hero any day ♥ hng

I dislike the way they're managing the animation the last few episodes, though. The animation in a lot of conversational parts is like a child did it, meanwhile the animation during the matches is like top of the line. I'd rather have it balanced out the way it was for the first half of the series. Episode 10 had the worst quality dips to the point where it was distracting to me. Don't have 1/10 animation in one scene then flash to 10/10. It just doesn't make sense, imo. At least put something average between them.

17 Name: Yatahaze !E/8OvwUzpY : 2014-06-15 09:18 ID:FVP2/LUq [Del]

Can't wait for the finale. This show has been amazing, I don't even care about the inconsistent animation quality anymore. Lots of player psychology and development without spoonfeeding to us. Yuasa is a brilliant director.

and nobody's mentioned this yet but Ping Pong also has a live action movie that was nominated for 8 Japanese Academy Awards so /o/

Patience is hard.

Other than being excited for the next episode though, I gotta say I can't way to get my hands on this baby's soundtrack.

Oh I most def recommend the live-action movie for anyone who loves this series and otherwise. Seriously my favorite Japanese movie and one of my favorite movies period. It's truly a beautiful film and deserved every nomination it earned in the "Japanese Academy Awards" it got. Seriously guys check it out asap.

I think I died and went to ping pong anime heaven.

Sountraaack. Those are just samples though and I can't see if it's written anywhere when the whole OST comes out :T

24 Name: Yatahaze !E/8OvwUzpY : 2014-06-20 21:27 ID:jsfjC7/V [Del]

so that ended beautifully.
Loved that they essentially blew over the final match both with the animation quality (helped me get a sense of how free they both felt) and the anticlimactic ending, instead diving straight into the epilogue.

Ping Pong tastes like a 10 about as much as blood tastes like iron.

A lot. /o/

Fun fact that I got while reading the manga. Smile's nickname is explained, but Peco's never is, though that's probably because if you're from Japan you'd get it.

It actually comes from the mascot for a confectionery company called Peko and he most likely got it because he's so into sweets.

26 Name: Yatahaze !E/8OvwUzpY : 2014-06-27 13:46 ID:zhal+z0c [Del]

>>25
On that note, how much does the manga differ/expand on what's in the anime?

27 Name: bang✫bang : 2014-06-27 14:30 ID:FSLxJJ43 [Del]

>>26 There are some differences, a few of them major, but as for expanding, it's the anime that does the expanding, there isn't really more of anything in the manga. Both Wenge and Kazama's roles are actually much smaller in the manga than they are in the anime.

It's weird, because like 90% of the time I prefer the manga to its anime adaptation, but in this case I really like the anime more. The manga is still totally worth checking out though. And so is the movie.

There's a bunch of small differences like how in the manga Smile plays with a Rubik's cube a lot instead of a game console or the order of some scenes.

There are one or two things though that I don't quite understand the reasoning behind changing/leaving out. One of them is that when Peco has his breakdown, quits ping pong and grows long hair he starts hanging out at an arcade. And there's a scene there that basically mirrors his introductory scene at Tamura's, where he introduces himself and challenges this dude to play a game against him. At the arcade though he introduces himself as Poco instead of Peco, which related to >>25 is the name of another lesser known mascot of the same company. It's an interesting scene.

Also at the very end Smile's reading a magazine with Peco on the cover and mentions him in his conversation with Kazama, while in the anime he isn't really referred to directly even though it's implied that Smile read stuff about him online. It was kind of weird to leave their current relationship kind of in the air like that, though I have no doubt they'd still be friends, I mean why wouldn't they?

28 Name: Yatahaze !E/8OvwUzpY : 2014-06-27 16:59 ID:zhal+z0c [Del]

>>27
Interesting. Must have just been a matter of what Yuasa wanted to emphasize in the anime. Though the Rubik's Cube would fit with Smile's personality, I like that they used a video game to support the robot motif.

In other news, I got a haircut today and it almost looks kinda Peco-ish and I've been binging on sweets send help

29 Name: bang✫bang : 2014-06-27 17:39 ID:FSLxJJ43 [Del]

>>28 I think it might have been changed in an effort to make it more up to date too? Maybe. Like how before the final match there were people's texts on the screen, which weren't in the manga, because there were no smartphones and barely any internet in 1996. And at the end Smile wasn't reading a magazine but reading news online. Might be a reason the arcade scene got left out too, since who goes to arcades these days?

Have you considered trying out table tennis? How many items of clothing in your wardrobe have stars on them?

30 Name: Yatahaze !E/8OvwUzpY : 2014-06-27 21:55 ID:zhal+z0c [Del]

>>29
I don't think it set in how old the original work was. Geez, that means the protagonists in the manga were born in what, 1980? Holy cow.

More props to Yuasa (and probably the film too?) for updating the cultural and technological bits. I still think arcades are relevant enough in some hipster or slacker cultures to be included but otherwise, good choices.

Question for you, bangstarbang: do you think any anime for the rest of this year can top Ping Pong or is this it? Is this the one that will go down as classic? Will anything else even come close?

I personally can't see it happening. It's just too good.

31 Name: bang✫bang : 2014-06-28 02:16 ID:FSLxJJ43 [Del]

>>30 Idk man, I don't watch a lot of stuff from current seasons. I'm probably going to watch another 2-3 things this year. Watanabe's new thing might be good. There's also that Ghibli anime. But considering I don't fall in love with anime all that often, I think the chances of me enjoying something else more are pretty low.

I'm up to date with the Anime~

Also >>31>>30 I can now say with certainty that this is my anime of the year.

39 Name: ShinAttha : 2014-10-25 20:07 ID:VqqnG2XT [Del]

Okay guys, please help me.
I hear a lot of people and critics recommending this show, simply saying it is good. However, I do not favour sports anime and from my point of view, ping pong is only a show about table-tennis with a peculiar animation style.
So what is the reason this anime gets so much attention? Is it that the characters incredibly well conducted? What is it that is so amazing about this show?

40 Name: Yatahaze !E/8OvwUzpY : 2014-10-25 22:26 ID:OzaNLMsr [Del]

>>39
It is that the characters are incredibly well constructed. There's a lot of balance to the cast and every person has their flaws both on the court (is that the right term for table-tennis? idk) and off it. The pacing for the show is top notch and the directing is brilliant. Though all the characters' lives revolve around ping-pong, I'd say the show itself revolves around the concepts of ability and sports psychology more than the sport. In doing so it bypasses a lot of typical sports show cliches and feels like a more academic story to be analyzed (well, it is) than a simple show about a group of athletes with a passion for a game.

From the wording of your question, I couldn't really tell if you haven't seen it yet and were skeptical about its quality or if you've already tried it and don't get it. If it's the former, please, give it a go. If it's the latter, what doesn't make it stand out to you. I'm curious.

but it's hard to tamper with perfection like that

will report back

>>48 Omg...I forgot there was a dub (I never pay attention because I'm a weeb). I wanna check it out now too. Though the Japanese voices really stuck with me, I can still hear little Peco in my head saying the thing.

My professional opinion is that it's decent. The voice I like least is probably Smile's, but it's not really terrible or anything.
