I've seen a lot of junk threads for this, so I felt the need to do a proper piece of work.

Mekakucity Actors is a anime airing during the Spring 2014 season, produced by none other than SHAFT. It's based on the popular Kagerou Project series of Vocaloid songs produced by Jin (aka Shizen no Teki-P) and became popular with the song "Kagerou Days." Kagerou Project is known for its catchy songs and the theories surrounding the overarching plot.

Mekakucity Actors follows a group of teenagers called the Mekakushi Dan, most of whom possess strange eye abilities as they go about figuring out the mysteries behind their abilities and how they acquired them. I left this intentionally vague, as not to spoil anything for any prospective viewers here.

The plot all starts around Shintaro, a reclusive computer-addicted NEET who is forced to venture to the outside world after his PC crashes due the meddling of a cyber girl by the name of Ene. He ends up running into the Dan, and then the fun starts.

Because this show is based off of a series of songs, you can probably expect the soundtrack to be top-tier. And with SHAFT behind the animation, it should be a gorgeous thing to watch, too. If you're interested, give it a shot!

Hibiya saying 'Maternity Spiral' made me think of Kuroha. Sad thoughts. I wonder if Kuroha will appear in the anime, because he hasn't had a CM an he's fairly important?!

I personally liked the first episode, despite a couple of goofs here and there. I think they're just eager to get past the store part quickly.

I thought the first episode was pretty good! The art is different but the animation is still pretty good. I love the intro and ending song! It's very catchy.

I loved the first episode i thought it did the series pretty well. The animation was done pretty well , the music was awesome , the characters all seemed in their own way mysterious so people new to the series will have something to look forward to.

I just generally really like the show. Mekaku city actors is my most anticipated anime of the year.

Now that novelty that a beloved series of mine got an anime after going through the show a few times, I can't look past how sort of rushed the non-closeup/gratuitous Shinbou parts were. Hopefully once Nisekoi ends its run, SHAFT will devote more effort towards this show.

Even though I hate doing subs, I gave this one a try and it's a fairly decent series. This will be the only series that I'll continuously watched subbed, and look forward to it all the while.

The first episode, SHAFFT, the art was terrible. It better improve. And Kano's fringe is annoying me =.= But I'm glad Seto got to appear in the first episode!

I watched it yesterday and it looks really interesting. It was quite an exciting episode. I am currently upset that I have to wait a week before the next episode.

But, the plotline seems to be getting a little bit off from the source material, and the settings and character voices didn't exactly match up to the expectations in my head.

Jin said in an interview that the plot for the anime would be similar to the manga, but follow its own route, so I wasn't entirely surprised by the divergence. I'm just glad the animation quality improved this episode.

I liked this episode, because of the new route I was expecting some changes but I wasn't expecting shaft to go full into Momo's backstory. (especially considering that hers doesn't have much to do with the plot of the anime as much as the other characters) But if they didn't do it here, i guess there'd be nowhere else to put it.

Yes, the newest episode was awesome. Though when Hibiya was brought it I was just thinking, "Oh. My. God...Why now???" But I have to admit, I'm pretty happy about it.

Im certainly hoping they keep integrating music into the episodes. It's a fun way to give a nod to the longtime fans. Unfortunately, I find some of the symbolism to be a little bit ham-fisted. I mean, that birdcage in episode 2? How obvious can you get?

I have randomly found the songs on youtube, but instantenly fell in love with them, then I heard there was a manga, so I checked it out, and an anime would be coming out, how lucky was I.
As I am reading above, there is a novel? Gotta see it.

Just watched the latest episode and I'm quite thrilled to see where this leads too. Actually discovered this after listening to some utaite songs (the YouTube suggestions are a godsend) and boom--here we are. It's kinda nice to try and piece out what could happen by basing on the concepts presented on the songs that subtly hinted of this anime's background. Especially intriguing was the scarfed girl from Lost Time Memories. :)

I've only recently heard of Kagerou Project, but I have watched a couple of the music videos and I'm reading the manga as well as looking forward to watching the anime~

Mekakucity Actors episode 3 is out! (And next episode is Kagerou Days okay I can't wait for that)

I'll just say that I loved just about this entire episode. The end was brilliant with Mekakushi Code in the background and its almost like shaft's animation couldn't keep up with how good of a job the voice actors and music were doing, wow.

Mekakushi Dan were introduced very well (Kano near perfect, Kido was a little off because what is up with all those poses- oh wait she has chuunibyou nevermind) and wow even more foreshadowing with seto yes~~ and somehow they never mentioned mary was a medusa, weird~~

Three episodes into Mes Akiyuki SHAFTers and I'm enjoying it very much despite extremely limited prior knowledge of the Kagerou Project.

Oh, and SHAFT Bingo is treating this show well. So far I've got these. Probably missing something though.

XD The songs got me hooked and there's so much feels T^T The manga is amazing and I love the seiyuu's in the anime XD Kido sounds so cool and Ene is so hyper and Konoha/Haruka is Mamoru Miyano! XD While I'm happy with Kano's seiyuu, I feel somewhat disappointed he isn't Hiroshi Kamiya...Yeah, Kano reminds me too much of Izaya XD And am I the only one who hates Momo and thinks she's annoying as f*ck?

But to get into the fandom you have to see a bit more than just the anime because the songs/novel/manga and anime all follow different 'routes'. The beginning of the story and the character's backstories stay the same, however what they actually do is different.
(Like in the anime they don't go to the amusement park but in the manga they did- both which had starkly different... outcomes) Anyway by having those different routes we get to know more and more about the characters and the entire story as a whole! It is very confusing at first and the manga and novel's aren't finished so there are still some stuff we don't know yet, but once the pieces we have now fit together it is a very amazing story >v<

It's your choice in the end, but if you need it the manga is called Kagerou Days, the novel is called Kagerou Daze (translations are found on tumblr, as well as a lot of the Kagerou Project fandom is also found on tumblr), as for the song series... there are about 22 songs in it. Searching up 'kagerou project playlist' on youtube and clicking the first one there will take you to them (the pv's are awesome by the way, It is also vocaloid however english covers can be found of Jubyphonic's channel).

The manga, light novel and the anime have a different flow of story that I don't know what's the legit flow anymore. =)) But for me, I think I like the light novel the most. *u*

a lot of people are judging kano as the antagonist based on his recent interaction with ene in the latest episodes. I guess they didnt read the novel or listen to the songs well kano was quite harsh on ene during the latest episode

Oh but about Yobanashi Decieve... idk if we'll get some clue or hints of it next episode but Kano really ties in with Kenjirou and widening eyes snake. So maybe they'll do something like a 'Dead and Seek' episode where the whole widening eyes snake thing is explained, along with Kano.

He's also super tied in with Ayano as well so maybe his secret will be revealed in a more 'Toumei Answer' like episode (seeing the "it's all your fault" scene would be perfection even though we'd all die from feels), or even as an out of the blue plot twist in 'Otsukimi Recital' it looks like we'll be getting since Kido, Momo and Hibiya ran off together. Or maybe even when Kuroha appears. O.O

I don't know, I'm not sure but this is fun to think about~~

I'd just like to put it out there that the hipster self-righteousness of the people who got into the songs before the anime was released is honestly suffocating. An anime was made because the story in the songs and the characters were interesting and worth one - not to amuse you because you like the song. It wasn't made to solely reveal things that weren't in the songs or to give you sparkly animation of the PVs. The mystery is in the anime for people who are watching the anime for the sake of the wonderful anime instead of for the sake seeing something they already know in animation form.

You guys are like people who read a manga before the anime was released and then complained the anime spent too long on a question that you already know the answer to because you read ahead in the manga. It makes absolutely no sense from an outsider's point of view.

Here's a warning: skip the op ! And if you've seen it, forget it. That op never existed nope, what is an ayano's theory- nope! Skip. The. Op. You will never regret it.

The rest was actually pretty good, as I said subs aren't out yet but it appears we got new information. The rest of the episode is not like the op btw.

This episode was like the worst Mekakucity Actors could produce and the best it could, rolled into one, imo.

- Just watched the subbed version of Act 9.

Ok only SHAFT could pull off having a god awful opening and then completely 180ing it to the 6TH NOVEL ALREADY and completely info dumping it in the most dramatic and interesting way possible with an awesome cliffhanger. I just enjoyed the rest of this episode a ton. Go watch Mekakucity Actors. Just skip the opening on the 9th episode that's the golden rule.

If you want to know what happens in the opening without the terribleness, go the music video and stop the video when ⚫ ⚪ ⚫ ⚪ ⚫ ⚪ ⚫ ⚪ appears! It's basically the same scenes.

We agreed that scenes such as the long explanation of the Daze were really necessary to have in there, but 10 minute info-dumps just aren't the way to do it. They could have cut to short clips of something else, like Seto looking for Kano, or something happening with Mary, or just anything to break up the monotony a little. Episode 9 did it right from both perspectives: It did a lot of info-dumping, but interspersed it with interesting scenes that old and new fans could enjoy, like the cute interactions between the kids.
And on the topic of "no Outer Science," let's just pray that they include it in one of the other episodes (Children Record could mean anything, right?), or that theory of getting some OVA episodes after 12 is correct.

I'm hoping there will be a second season. I know everyone says there won't be, but I still hope there will be. Because Jin said Shintaro would act more like a proper protagonist in and anime and that Kuroha would appear more. So far, there has been like 0 Kuroha and Shintaro hasn't really been there all that much.

I don't mind this ending for the last episode but that was really quick. An episode before this explaining the timeloops and especially the Kagerou Daze wouldn't hurt it at all. (There were issues with the CR translations too- on how Kuroha died and what happened with Hiyori so there's that)

Kuroha was perfection.

the last episode had a lotta feels and a good ending but it was fairly confusing so i am definitely going to read the manga, all in all, i really liked MCA~ :3

I swear all of the budget went to Ayano in that last episode.

Generously giving this a 6/10 but the show's real strength lies in being able to create atmospheric vignettes. When it tries to tie everything together, key details are left out and I really didn't feel invested in most of the characters. I tried to describe this the other day to someone with a jigsaw analogy - that clusters of pieces may fit together and give you a glimpse of a picture, but the next pieces are from a totally different puzzle and make no sense. Non-linear storylines can only work if the end product feels coherent. Actors' did not.

Shame.

This anime was AWESOME. I absolutley loved the characters and the plot. The art was really trippy but was cute and nice at times. The soundtrack was amazing, especially the begging and ending songs. The only bad thing was that it got confusing and a bit strange at times, but i didnt mind it thst much.

The snake goes to the other person that also "died" (ex: Kano's mother fell into it when people broke in and killed kano but when she fell into that little space a snake went into kano and brought him back to life).

I love the animation style! My favorite couple pairing is Mary x Seto. They're really cute together. c; The characters were all very interesting in general, though!

My thing with this anime was that Shaft should've waited a bit more until the budget was large enough that they could do a decent anime. I am greatly disappointed, not by the first time script writer (Jin), but Shaft as a whole. They have made countless anime that have amazing art, but I feel with MCA that they didn't try their hardest. At all. I mean, what renowned animation studio, today, uses MikuMikuDance. Also, the anime is assuming that the viewer has listened to the songs and read the light novels. But most of the viewers have not. So that also created lots of confusion and disappointment among watchers. I honestly wish that I haven't watched this at all. Ignorance is bliss, after all.

I love MCA but i did get confused at some points. I think a lot of people were too. It threw me off when they suddenly changed styles in episode 9, Ayano's Theory of Happiness. And my favorite character is definitely Shuuya Kano.

The Mekakucity Actor is an amazing anime and worth my time :D but sad to say that it ended in the anime and now I'm reading them manga series of it coz I didn't like the ending in the anime

i read some chapters and watched the 1st episode, i think the manga is better than the anime.

DUDE... I thought the blue girl was hatsune, BTW they kinda look like vocaloids.

Well the Kagerou Project started out as Vocaloid songs so I wouldn't be to surprised if the charaters look a bit like vocaloids.

It was disappointing. The story was rushed and probably made no sense for those who didn't watch the Mv's of Kagerou Project. I was expecting it to be good TT.TT

I thought the anime was pretty good, although I probably am not one to speak since I just watched the full anime and a couple of their songs, but I will agree the series did seem a bit rushed and I was a bit disappointed with some of the parts and ending but I wouldn't say enough to hate since I always thought mekakucity actors was really good.

I felt like the anime, while it had its moments, really was the weakest part of all the components of Kagepro. A lot of it didn't make sense unless you knew what was going on already, I thought.

TBH, the anime explained the stuff the best to me, probably because of the animation. I did hear the songs first of coursely, but I was confused about what's going on as I wasn't sure of their order either. Then I found out it even has a manga! Had to read it, it became a bit clearer to me, but then after it had an anime adaptation, everything came out in the cleanest form! xD

I'm quite a big fan of the series, and as one I don't think the anime did the best job it could have done with the series. I believe if they had more episodes the series may have been improved tremendously, slowing down the pace and fixing plot holes. people who are interested in the series should look more to the manga, songs and novels since there is so much more to it than the anime which was a quick overview of the series.

I wish shidu was the one who'll do the animation, I really disappointed about the anime although the PVs and manga are perfect

I loved this anime. The anime is quite short though. I wish it lasted longer. Though the manga is just as amazing, but the chapter pages are short too. Then there's the soundtrack. In my opinion it's well sung. All in all, it is all well made. :)

I admit this show is hard on newcomers. Especially if one is trying out the anime with absolutely no background knowledge at all because it will be very confusing. I however, personally, loved the entire anime series because it brought to light many things I had been questioning since Jin released Kagerou Days.

The ending satisfied me too (because I felt like there was closure), but as a standalone anime, I think it wasn't as good.

I simply love KagePro! Being a fan of Vocaloid and all, I was first introduced to it from Miku's Kagerou Days, and then I went to read the manga. And I also watched the anime! I find it all really unique, of having each episode with a song. And Jin is srsly talented! Also, the storyling and concept was really well-made!

i was so pump up when they announce that Kagepro will make an anime, since i've seen few MV and I love the song, characters and seen the manga, etc...
although SHAFT did their best in the first few episode,but as it goes, their few dissapointment and they make the pot pretty rush, would be better if they did 2 different timeline or something.. ending was ehh... needs more kuroha..but atleast we be happy that they create an anime.

I love the manga and Vocaloid music videos, but when I saw the anime, I was put into disappointment since Shaft didn't do as well as a job as I hoped it would have. There was no Outer Science, and Ayano's Theory of Happiness was just creepy, no Yobanashi Deceive, no Konoha's State of the World, and overall it just made no sense. Shaft didn't have the best animation in this, the songs were okay, but I liked Vocaloid better. I love the story and concept by Jin, but Shaft just didn't make the best impression of it. However, I DO like the OP and ED xD But really, the manga and Vocaloid music videos are more worth it

Well I first saw the music videos and fell in love with the characters. The manga also was awesome.
But I have to say that I expected more from the anime.
Some animations weren't really good and the characters were standing like models (for ex. they have one hand in the hips and then bows a little... hope you understand what I mean?)
I wouldn't say the anime is really bad. But it could have been better. Much better. Maybe they make a movie with it and make a better animation and better story x'D
But all in one it is a interesting story with the eyes and stuff :3

Well, you can't really say that the anime was bad... The studio who animated this was SHAFT... It was the same anime studio who did Monogatari Series and Nisekoi... If you will notice the same style used, especially the "model" and "180° head flip" stuff.. But I guess they went a little overboard in animating this one...
