5 Centimeters Per Second is a romance anime that portrays the amazing speed at which the capricious feeling we call love can fade as quickly as time passes. Life passes too quickly, but it wasn't always that way. In the main character's (Takaki Tohno) childhood, he falls in love with Akari Shinohara. However, Akari was forced to move to another region of Japan due to her family's job. This tiny gap in their relationship will gradually broaden into a gulf of forsaken love, and Tohno, unwilling to face the bittersweet reality, remains at a standstill in his life.
Many underlying themes are presented in this anime; the beauty of a childhood romance contrasted with a harsh reality, letting go of an unreachable past, being in control of your life. The emotions in this anime are painstakingly realistic, and the animation is nothing short of brilliant.
