Thanks for all the input so far, guys.
With the fall shows either finished or done their first seasonal run, here are my awards:
1) Best Show: Uchouten Kazoku. Our thread for it is
here. It's just perfect.
2) Best Animation Studio: P.A. Works, I suppose. I may be wrong but I don't think any studio that did multiple projects lacked a weak one that screwed things up. Haven't seen the low-scored RDG, but Nagi no Asukara and Uchouten Kazoku were really nice.
3) Most Overrated: Watamote. Fuck Watamote.
4) Most Underrated: Aku no Hana. I understand that this show relies almost completely on mood and suspense though, and if you've read the manga and know what's coming, it probably isn't anywhere near as good.
5) Most Pleasing Surprise: Senyu. I expected nothing out of this dinky little 4-minute comedy, but I got everything and then some.
6) Biggest Disappointment: Kyoukai no Kanata. I very rarely get myself hyped for shows since I like to go into them neutrally and judge them totally objectively. I was enthused about Kyoukai since I first saw it on the fall charts. My enthusiasm faded very quickly when I actually started watching it. It only got worse with time.
7) Best Season: Fall. More shows I watched this year came from fall than any other season.
8) Best Art: Kyousougiga. Good god, Kyousougiga.
This show is a feast for the eyes.9) Best Animation: Attack on Titan. Argue about its hype all you want, it's undeniable that the animation was consistently far above average.
10) Best Writing: Uchouten Kazoku. It's hard to put into words why I think the writing for this was so great, it just is. Kyousougiga too. Both shows are 10/10 as a whole and if they had poor writing, that wouldn't be possible.
11) Most Feels: Uchouten Kazoku. Some of these episodes, man.
12) Best Jack-of-all-Trades: Silver Spoon. As much as I love Uchouten Kazoku and Kyousougiga, Silver Spoon had a more diverse array of narrative styles and its different setting helped even some of its more trope-like moments feel original.
13) Best Single Episode: Uchouten Kazoku episode 13. Final episode of the series, so no spoilers for you folks, but everything wraps up in a hilarious series of events and the epilogue bit at the end isn't rushed.
14) Best OP: "Crowds" by White Ash (Gatchaman Crowds OP). Fantastic visuals? Check. Fantastic direction? Check. Fantastic song composition and production? Check. Near-perfect sync? Check. A hell of a lot of Engrish? Oh boy, check. I think we have a winner here folks. Oh, and to top it off, the actual music video for the song involves people swordfighting with water-powered jetpacks. It is the best.
There were so many good ones though, so here aree some honorable mentions:
2-“Jiyuu no Tsubasa” by Linked Horizon (Attack on Titan OP2)
3-“Guren no Yumiya” by Linked Horizon (Attack on Titan OP1)
4-“May I Help You?” by Ai Kayano, Mai Nakahara, and Aki Toyosaki (Servant x Service OP)
5-“Koko” by Tamurapan (Kyousougiga OP)
6-“Synchromanica” by Negoto (Galilei Donna OP)
7-“Uchouten Jinsei” by Milktub (Uchouten Kazoku OP)
8-“Halo” by Tacica (Space Brothers OP7)
9-“Database feat. TAKUMA (10 Feet)” by Man With A Mission (Log Horizon OP)
10-“Mukai Kaze” by Yohko (Maoyuu Maou Yuusha OP)
15) Best ED: "Utsukushiki Zankoku no Sekai" by Yoko Hikasa (Attack on Titan ED1). That art style. Those chord progressions. That vocal performance. It's all just perfect.
Honorable mentions for best ED:
2-“Great Escape” by Cinema Staff (Attack on Titan ED2)
3-“Topology” by Itou Kanako (Robotics;Notes ED2)
4-“Qué Será, Será” by Fhána (Uchouten Kazoku ED)
5-“Daisy” by Stereo Dive Foundation (Kyoukai no Kanata ED)
16) Best OST: Haven't actually listened to one outside of the anime they're from, but I'd have to say Kill la Kill's music has kept my attention the most this year.
17) Best Voice Acting: Hataraku Maou-Sama. Over the top comedy done right.
18) Best Main Character: Myoue/Yakushimaru (Kyousougiga). Myoue’s backstory alone is enough to make you feel for the guy, but Kyousougiga’s events make feeling for him not enough. As its story comes closer to full circle, Myoue becomes more personal to anyone who has experienced loss or a falling out with their family.
19) Best Supporting Character: Mako Mankanshoku (Kill la Kill). People can say what they want about this show, but they cannot deny that the “hyperactive cheerleader friend to the MC” trope has never been done with more self-aware class and lack of giving a fuck than Mako. She’s a hilarious character to watch, and the heart and soul of Kill la Kill’s out-of-the-box wackiness without sacrificing her personality. I wish I personally knew someone like Mako. Mako is da fuckin’ bomb, ya dig?
20) Best Antagonist: The Female Titan (Attack on Titan). Ain't no one stop this bitch. The carnage she makes is immense.
21) Best Death: Click at your own risk, but
this person from Robotics;Notes, in episode 16. Their death topped off a string of events that made R;N a slice-of-life with hints of distant sci-fi chaos into a show that took itself a lot more seriously. The death itself was incredibly emotional and it changed the show for the better.
22) Best Anime Original: Tamako Market. I'm a sucker for KyoAni's moe. There were a few bobbles, but I thought this was still quite solid for a slice-of-life show.
23) Best Anime Short: Senyu. See award 5. It's just gold.
24) Best OVA: Only good one I've seen was Tonari no Kaibutsu-Kun: Tonari no Gokudou-kun. It was decent enough. If you liked the original, you'll enjoy this little OVA spinoff.
25) Best Film: The Garden of Words. It’s by the guy that did 5 Centimeters per Second, so it
looks fucking great. Its two main characters are voiced by Miyu Irino and Kana Hanazawa. The music is by Kashiwa Daisuke. The story is a mess, but it’s a beautifully disjointed mess; one that walks in bad shoes but carries a heart of gold and will hit you right in the feels whether you want it to or not.
BONUS CATEGORY) Best Show That Didn't Receive An Award Or Mention Me Yet: Oregairu. With a cynical wit as sharp as a knife, Oregairu occasionally falls victim to the very tropes it tries to avoid, but make no mistake, its narrative is not that of your average rom-com. Anyone looking for a show that breaks the mold of high school anime, look no further. It’s not perfect, but the effort is enough.
