As its name might suggest, Uchouten Kazoku is a pretty eccentric series. It has a slice of life vibe and is centered around the Shimogamo tanuki family, how they live among humans, their relationships with each other, other tanuki, tengu and the mysterious Friday Club. The character interactions are at the heart of the series, since in the few episodes available so far not much is given away about the story. The art style is also worth mentioning, it's very fun and colorful.

If you want credentials, the story is by Morimi Tomihiko, author of The Tatami Galaxy, and the character designs by Kouji Kumeta of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. It's an interesting show, definitely worth checking out.

I'm gonna need an eccentric slice-of-life after finishing this season's more dramatic animes. I might put it off for a while, though, depending on how many episodes are out thusfar.

Shit's really good. Best new show this summer in my opinion.

I love how even though everything going on is quite eccentric, in that world and setting, everyone's attitude is pretty laid back. I find it really hard to pin the vibe this show gives off, and as a critic, not being able to find the words to express it is usually a good sign it's doing something unique.

I was under the impression that the character design was one of the high points.

There is a fine line between being creative and out there and just mucking up all the characters. Now I have only seen the first episode so I'm probably not one to judge but they obviously intended the purple haired female to be incredibly attractive. This was not portrayed well. Sure, she wowed men and wooed them just as easily but she wasn't very attractive. The rest I get it, it's stylized. I can see how you could get attached to them in a strange way but you can't go for 2 completely different things at once. Either portray her beauty or make her stylized, the compromise has to be reached at some point.

Solace, I see absolutely no flaw with these character designs. How are these characters mucked up? I just don't get where you're coming from, even with that description. I don't see a large disconnect between Benten's design and the rest of the characters. :P

Crunchy Roll agrees with me, as well. (Not saying that accounts for anything). But Anime is entirely based off personal preference so it varies from person to person.

Yeah, I quite like Benten's design. The ears on most of the characters don't bother me too much considering they look kind of animal-y and you know....tanuki-y.

I was looking at a photo of her and I think I figured it out. It's because both her eyes and mouth points towards to space in the middle of her face where her nose should be. The fact that they all angle to the absence of a nose throws me off and both leads me to find her less appealing and throws me out of the show's plot.

Don't get me wrong though, I am no more of a fan of massive breasted, glistening lips, anime whores than you guys. I used to like them but you really just get sick of them. It's not that I have an issue with her not being a particular kind of appealing; it's just that her character sets up to be this amazingly attractive goddess then the whole 'face' deal throws me out of wack.

Man this show can be really creepy in a very carefree kind of way, it is weird.

And for some reason while watching ep 6 I got this odd feeling that it might in fact end on a pretty sad note. It's probably just me though.

I'm considering stopping watching this on Crunchyroll so that I can catch up, but the main I stuck around so long is that I really dig the subbing it has there. Any other websites with particularly good subs for this? What do you guys watch it on?

I'm starting to second the possibility of this ending in a really sad way. Benten and the other Friday Fellows are such conflicting characters when it comes to wanting to eat Yasaburo and tanuki in general. The food chain this presents is such a strange dynamic. I sometimes even have to remind myself that the Shinogamos aren't human, because frogbro aside, they all act like such. If establishing that was the main point of the first half of the show, then the writers succeeded.

I'm eagerly anticipating the bathhouse episode. It looks like great fun. Please, don't spoil it, anyone.

This anime has me torn. I do like the characters and all, but I'm not yet sure what to think of it or where exactly it's going. The way eating tanuki - a sentient species - is handled is just... weird.
I do want to find out how this ends. I hope it does not end in a really sad way... though I too can see it coming.
