Cyborg 009 was first a manga by the legendary Shotaro Ishi(no)mori, who is also the creator of other famous series such as Kamen Rider and Super Sentai.

I watched the anime when I was around five when it came on Cartoon Network around 2003. It's a remake of the original Cyborg 009 anime which aired in 1968, which came after the first two Cyborg 009 movies. There was also another remake in 1979-1980 however I've only watched the 2001 version. And if old style anime isn't your thing, then there's a somewhat new movie called 009 Re: Cyborg which came out in 2012 based on the series.

The anime starts off with Joe Shimamura, an eighteen year old delinquent who finds himself in a room on an operation table. He gets up and alarms set off, then gasses are released into the room. A voice in his head claiming to be named 001 guides him throughout the laboratory Joe is confined in, and finds out that he has gained superhuman abilities. After Joe successfully escapes he meets eight other people, one of them being 001, who tell Joe that he has been altered by an origination know as Black Ghost, who promotes global warfare thus creating the cyborg weapons, and is the ninth in a series of cyborgs with extraordinary powers, now known as 009.

The story revolves around the nine cyborgs, how they deal with their new status' as cyborgs, and their battle against Black Ghost.

I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of anime like Casshern Sins and those who want to watch a real classic.
