meh...

2 Name: Anonymous : 2013-05-12 10:42 ID:3WYYRk13 [Del]

Ugh, all of them look way too much like most other Anime's of their genre.

Usually every season or so there is one anime that jumps out of the rest but I guess summer missed out.

The only one i'd be interested in is the new Sailor Moon. Other than that it looks like I'll be watching the older anime's, bit disappointing summer

5 Name: Yatahaze !E/8OvwUzpY : 2013-05-12 14:36 ID:FVP2/LUq [Del]

New ____monogatari stuff? Sounds sweet. The rest? Meh. Looks like summer will be a stronger season for continuations than new titles.

2013 has been very underwhelming considering the last few years have boasted a handful of impressive shows.

Guys I don't think there's going to be a Gakuen Babysitters anime. I've looked around on MAL and ANN but there is basically no news on the subject. If an anime was ever announced there should be some.

The first chart isn't accurate. Look at >>6

Oh my gosh, guys. It's a continuation from Traumend o-o

Rozen Maiden is making its comeback... prepare your anusi, bitches. This is goddamn spectacular. Art better be on par with Traumend >I Hope there's a reasonable explanation for everything that's happened between them, though. I'm kind of hoping they ditch the original male protagonist, but that's unlikely, so...

23 Name: BarabiSama !!C8QPa1Mt : 2013-05-15 07:10 ID:HvmaGaWM [Del]

Actually, as far as club anime goes, Stella Women's Academy looks interesting (I worry it'll end up like that one, shitty K-On spin off, though). As far as harem's go, a part of me is actually looking forward to Brother's Conflict. I mean, that whole story has been done about six dozen times before, but this is the first time that there were ELEVEN brothers to choose from o-o

And of course, we're all looking forward to more of the Monogatari series.

Fantasista Doll seems like it's just a very badly timed mix of Rozen Maiden x YuGiOh, but I might give it a chance.

Blood Lad looks like something that should have been released during Vampire Cross and/or Zombie Loan's time, but seems decent none the less.

Renai Lab looks like shit.

Danganropa looks fucking badass, but while the art may be interesting (if the game is a good reference for that), I have a feeling the animation won't match up. We'll just have to see.

Gatchanam Crowds also looks good. The story is just a little overdone.

And I'm only watching Free! for the fanservice .u.

24 Name: BarabiSama !!C8QPa1Mt : 2013-05-15 07:14 ID:HvmaGaWM [Del]

See >>6 for the real list

I'm also looking forward to The Sun Penetrates the Illusions. I just hope it doesn't turn into a magical girl sentai :c I don't mind magical girls, but the whole sentai thing is getting really overdone. I want to see a girl kick ass alone - not fight with four other girls against one enemy and still nearly get her ass kicked.

So, what's everyone been watching?

New stuff I've checked out from least favorite to favorite:

Free! (1 episode seen, dropped for now, may come back to it later)
I voiced my thoughts on its thread here, but for a quick recap, I found the animation brilliant but I'm dissuaded from continuing it because I'm obviously not its target audience.

Recorder and Randsell Mi (1 episode seen)
The first two were decent for shorts so I figured "eh why not." There are only so many things this show can do before it gets too repetitive and boring though.

Dog & Scissors (3 episodes seen)
Saw this on another chart and the description just looked absolutely ludicrous. Checked it out with low expectations, and it's really predictable and stupid, but still somewhat entertaining.

Yami Shibai (1 episode seen)
Another short. It uses a neat kind of childish animation technique with paper cutouts and dim atmospheres to tell little horror stories and occult Japanese myths and superstitions. 1st episode was neat, looking forward to more.

Sunday Without God/Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi (1 episode seen)
Can't really tell where this one will go yet. I found our little girl protagonist kind of irritating, but the way the plot twisted on its head at the end of episode 1 has me intrigued for more.

Gatchaman Crowds (1 episode seen)
I had not seen or even heard of any of the previous Gatchaman series before watching this, and newcomers should know that you probably don't have to. This episode was colorful and fun, and I don't quite know what to think of those suits, but the characters are interesting to watch, the setting is neat, and the visuals are definitely a change from the norm.

Servant x Service (2 episodes seen)
I've heard this described as Japan's version of The Office. It's lolsy and not too over the top. If you enjoyed Working, you'll probably also like this. Same type of art style and humor. Catchy as fuck OP.

Watamote/It's Not My Fault I'm Unpopular (2 episodes seen)
How does one not like this? The manga shot up in popularity across the interwebs a while back and it was enjoyable. I didn't get too far in since I knew this anime adaption was coming and I didn't want to spoil all the events for myself, but it's been faithful so far and it translates very well. My only concern is if it will fitz out by the middle or end of its run or not. Also can we agree the OP is awesome? Satirical misleading OPs for the win.

Danganronpa (3 episodes seen)
I'm very cautious going into shows like this based off of my previous experiences with mystery or horror anime with a "kill-or-be-killed" attitude. I didn't enjoy it in Mirai Nikki, I thought Deadman Wonderland was poorly executed, and Devil Survivor 2 last season fell flat on its face before it even got out of the gate. Danganronpa, while a tad predictable thus far, has actually played its cards very well. The characters have distinct attitudes, but the one I was most worried about ruining the show is already dead. I've seen the pilot, the first murder, and the first trial, and though I was able to correctly guess the first murderer, I was still on the edge of my seat for any curveballs thrown. If you enjoy shows like the ones I previously mentioned, you will enjoy this, and if you didn't enjoy them, this still may end up satisfying.

Silver Spoon/Gin no Saji (1 episode seen)
I just love shows like this. I love the lazy but not socially inept protagonist, I love the side-cast so far, the art fits it well, etc. I know Silver Spoon is a bit of a safe bet as a slice-of-life that doesn't get too over the top, but I found myself smirking so often throughout its pilot that I feel this show will continue to provide steady lols as its run goes on. Like slice-of-lifes and comedies? Don't miss this one.

and finally, my favorite thus far:
Uchouten Kazoku/The Eccentric Family (2 episodes seen)
This show is pretty bizarre. There's a very laid back attitude and the first two episodes get the ball rolling slowly with little plot. The setting is so easy to be immersed into, and these episodes, which mainly focus on character development, do so in a fashion that feels very natural. All the characters seem to know each other before the series starts, so there's bound to be an occasional flashback or two and weird reference that doesn't make sense at first but will be revealed later. Yasaburo is easily the coolest protagonist this season and the fantasy elements in this boost its enjoyability. It's quirky and eccentric, alright. And it's doing it damn well. Don't miss this one.

Other stuff I've yet to check out:
Monogatari Season 2
Gonna watch this one by arc, and the first one hasn't ended yet so... :P

Senyuu season 2
This show was made to marathon. I can wait.

So yeah, what are your thoughts on these? Or even your thoughts on my thoughts? Thoughts on this season's anime in general? Anything you feel I missed? Go go go.

I dunno, I think they were just surprised that the plot wasn't all in their face just yet. Personally I think it was a fine introduction, and it shows that the characters and their interactions already have significant depth to them.

People are just impatient I guess.

I really don't wanna make a thread while I'm behind the latest episode. :P

Now that there are actually episodes out, I'll copy Yahtzee there and make a list of what I've watched and what I think. I have a lot to catch up on, but keep in mind that I usually push new series' off until all of the episodes are out. These few just caught my eye:

Brother's Conflict (1 episode watched)
Very disappointed. I was hoping for a fresh reverse harem anime with modern art/animation and got a carbon copy of every other shoujo manga made on a budget. The animation is very cheap with minimal movement involved and straight face camera angles for basically every scene. The art is average. The opening theme sucks. The music is overused j-pop. I like the idea of having a sickly main character... however, that's not what I got. They just pulled the fever card in the first episode. Kind of like in UtaPri how they said the main character was weak and couldn't stand high amounts of activity yet magically got mentally healed by one guy's magical voice. Such a let down in both of these :L

Louis is probably the most original yet still generic feeling brother thusfar. He doesn't fit into an exact stereotype. His job as a hair stylist is pretty rare among normal shoujo series while the others are not (one is a lawyer, one is a pop star, one is a sexy buddhist, et cetera). The male characters aren't the only disappointment this time around, though: The main character is also extremely flat. She's just your generic, "I'll smile and be nice to everyone and maybe be kind of quiet, but secretly I'm always depressed and need someone to cuddle waaaah," female lead, so :I blah. Could be better. Not sure if I'm going to drop it or give it another chance. I'd be more likely to continue if the lead was more interesting or perhaps had a stronger voice actor to balance out with her dull personality.

Attack on Titan (15 episodes watched)
Very strong start for an anime. The lead male is borderline, in my opinion, meaning that he's not quite like all the other shounen protagonists, but is very close to it. The lead female started out pretty badarse but lost her most interesting traits about halfway through what I've watched thusfar by becoming this quiet love interest. Hopefully that will change. As for the story, this is a refreshing take on it. The giants idea hasn't been done much in anime but is common in other forms of media, and rather than copy those previous creations, AoT has really taken the base ideas and basically thrown it straight into this new-generation media without massacring it.

The art is pretty damn good. The animation is SPEC-TAC-U-LARH. The characters are pretty realistic, though I worry about the unoriginal mob mentality of most of the side characters. I like the way they're tossing philosophy and politics in it without losing the idea that it's just an anime; basically, the politics aren't taking it over. In some animes, the philosophy outshines the main characters, and that's alright every now and again. I just don't think this anime could have gotten this far with that style.

All in all, great anime. Its newer episodes aren't as strong as its start, but it's still worth watching; I have every intention of continuing it until its over.

Rozen Maiden 2013 / "Season 3" (2 episodes watched)
Enjoying the new story; disappointed with the new art; not impressed nor bothered by the average animation. I think that they've done well to stick to Jun's core traits when moving on to his older self in the alternate universe. They left a few confusing things with the summary in the first episode, though; they summarized the events that happened in the manga rather than the events that happened in the previous season of the anime. I understand that this season was supposed to fix all the discrepancies between the two, yes. It's just very confusing as a fan who has not read the manga in full and is basing all her knowledge on the previous seasons of the anime.

Again, the art is a huge let down. The one thing that got Rozen Maiden so highly acclaimed was its art. It had some of the most dramatic, eye-catching scenes. The way they did the fabrics on the dolls made them look so rich and expensive. Everything was so perfect that seeing it in a different style is utterly disgusting. I feel like everything the previous seasons built up has been destroyed between the art and the first episode.

Yes, the new art is modern. Yes, I know I've never complained about it in other animes. The point is, it's not Rozen Maiden's art. Rozen Maiden was always very distinct. THIS ISN'T IT. I admit that the story is very intriguing with the alternate universes, though, and will continue to watch it merely for the story and characters.

As for why I have "Season 3" in quotes, that's because I'm kind of confused. There was an ova event that I thought we were counting as a season, which is why a lot of people were referring to the Traumend season as Season 3. I guess the 2013 season is technically Season 3, but I just grew up thinking that Traumend was it, so .___.

Uchouten Kazoku / The Eccentric Family (2 episode watched)
I'm actually finding this adorable despite normally not being a fan of slice-of-life series. The art and animation are certainly above average but not spectacular. The music is fitting but not memorable (though the OP is kind of addicting). I like the light hearted story thusfar. Of all things, though, the characters take the cake. They seem pretty realistic for their situations and have brilliant interactions. They're also fairly relatable so far as both people and characters (putting magical fox and crow powers aside). Speaking of which, the fantasy aspects fit very well without overtaking the story.

Another big plus for me is the dry humor. I don't like animes that try too hard to shove humor in your face(/coughgintamacough); this has just enough bantering and situational irony to make you cackle to yourself throughout the episodes without any effort.

I'm definitely going to keep watching it.

51 Name: BarabiSama !!C8QPa1Mt : 2013-07-27 09:18 ID:u86G8vrH [Del]

Stella Jogakuin Koutou-ka C³-bu (2 episodes watched)
Mother fucking tea and cake. No really, the start of the first episode is basically that (still not sure if it was copying K-On! or making fun of it). I was not expecting much from the moe art and super shy main character, but the idea of an airsofting club was super interesting to me. Once the mock battles started, I was kind of hooked.

The art/animation are standard. Music wasn't worth mentioning. Most of the characters are actually pretty interesting considering it's such a standard moe "high school club" anime. I like the idea of the story and enjoy the battle scenes. All in all, it's not particularly bad nor good; I'm going to keep watching it to see if it actually gets a plot unlike most moe animes.

Blood Lad (1 episode watched)
I went into it with an open mind and came out with Nope. I don't mind the art, but the animation looks pretty cheap to me. Music wasn't worth mentioning. Love the main male lead. Main female lead? Ugh. It turned out to just be an ecchi anime hiding behind the overused fantasy idea of "a human wandering into the demon world" without anything that really inspired me to want to continue watching it. The side characters weren't bad but weren't good either. Everything's pretty average. Especially for an ecchi, the humor was lacking; the few jokes there were are ones you see in every anime. I doubt I'll be continuing it.

Danganronpa (4 episodes seen)
I'm... eh. I'm very much so on the border with this. The characters are all extremely flat and boring. The humor is awkwardly done in a way that's not getting any laughs from me. The art and animation have moments where they're great but otherwise are just plain, at times even sub-par. I do, however, like the story. I love the way they're working it with the idea of the "trials" and "motivational" parts.

Yata probably won't agree with me on this, but I wish they took their own story seriously. I don't mind these kind of "survival game" animes (including trapped/horror versions like Corpse Party) - I'm just not a fan of how this one is so unrealistic. The story is realistic; the characters and their reactions could be if the pacing of the story wasn't hiding it. It's the way that everything comes together that isn't realistic. It's also lacking the kind of gut wrenching feel that it could have.

I feel like this is the most realistic story idea out of all the survival games animes that I have watched and mangas that I have read, and it had the most potential to give me nightmares out of any of them. Did it even try to? Nope. I like the original execution ideas and the lack of heavy fanservice. I'm not quite sure what else to say about it.

I'm going to keep watching it for the story because I'm enjoying it; everything just feels "off" about it, though.

I certainly understand the feeling that the characters are kind of dry. Their physical appearances are certainly exaggerated and it comes off as immature at times. It definitely comes across as a more childish version of the scenario that has the potential for really gut-wrenching moments but doesn't want to go there. The pink blood and cartoony appearances reinforce it. I'm kind of just taking it for what it is now and acknowledging that even through all the faults it currently has, it's still entertaining me.

I was waiting for Illya and Danga!!! This is gonna be a somewhat good anime season.

57 Name: Anonymous : 2013-07-27 19:06 ID:ro3qQmKC [Del]

Anime adaptation of video games always tend to have characters feeling flat and other types of issues. Most visual novel game adaptations are under this, and Dangan Ronpa is no different. Especially since it's 13 episodes. Rushing 4-5 days of straight gameplay into 13 episodes are almost always a recipe for no success.

So in the end, it's one of those "if you want better characterization and such, just play the game". I've also heard somewhere on MAL I think, that the anime is basically a treat for the game players. So take that with what you will. Or not. It doesn't matter.

Seems that each arc of Dangan Ronpa is gonna get squeezed into 2 episodes. Sucks, but what can you do.

Really not much to this season.
Still, glad they made another season of Symphogear. Great songs, action scenes, and a bit of suffering, but seems they were off to a slow start. Just now seems to be picking up.
