South Park is an American animated sitcom that debuted on Comedy Central in 1997, created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Intended for mature audiences, it quickly gained a reputation for it's primitive cut-out animation, coarse language, and crude, black and surreal humour, which would often satire a wide range of subjects. The series focuses on four 8-year-old boys, Kyle Broflovski, Stan Marsh, Eric Cartman and Kenny McCormick, and chronicles some of their bizarre adventures around their titular Colorado town.

The currently ongoing show has had a rather long and successful run, running for 16 seasons now, and has recieved many awards, including four Primetime Emmy Awards, a Peabody Award, and has been included on many "best animated series'" lists. The show also spawned one theatrical film, "South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut."

Alright, shows like The Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad, and the like always get lumped together, right? Well, to be perfectly blunt, I fucking hate all of those shows. I think that was what kept me away from this series for all these years. I started watching this a few weeks ago, at some friends recommendations, and was really surprised by just how much I was enjoying it. Seriously, it may well be my cartoon ever, and yes, this is even in comparison to my childhood shows.

If you've never seen an episode of South Park in your life, I urge you to give it a go. I understand that the crude animation might be a bit off-putting, the humour sometimes offensive, maybe even your parents forbid you from watching it as a child (like mine). But really, the show is not as amoral as it may seem on the surface. It's actually a very clever satire, and a lot of episodes try to send messages to the viewer on some very important subjects. In so many ways, it's just something that everyone needs to see.

South Park is the best thing to ever hit western animation.
It is so good not just on a comedy level but also in a way that pinpoints and exposes the weak moral points within different aspects of society. I hate those people that say it is only fart humour, IT IS SO MUCH MORE. Its kind of ironic that the people who believe Southpark's humour is below them probably has lots of it going over their head.

>>2 agreed, It also makes quite a few, even though they are done in a comic way, statements about some of the problems with society

I was never a big fan of South Park or any of the shows mentioned in your OP, but I do respect South Park for being genuinely blunt and entertaining with more than just gags.

My little cousins are huge fans of it and when I visited them last Christmas, they were shocked to find out I didn't understand their Mr. Hanky The Christmas Poo references.

>cue them busting out their South Park DVD collection and making me watch a few episodes

I felt disgustedly enlightened afterwards.

>>4 I know what you mean. I myself thought that it was complete bullshit until I actually sat down and watched the first season. Seriously, don't think of it as a typical prime-time adult cartoon, but actually take some time to really watch it and enjoy it. You'll eventually fall in love with it like I did.

Also, Mr. Hankey, while awesome, is actually one my least favourite jokes in the series. Just be glad that Comedy Central didn't let Trey and Matt make him the main character.

>>2 I know, right? It takes some kind of genius to create a show like South Park.

Some episodes may be good (funny), but in my opinion I'd rather it drop dead than anything.

I hate Family guy and would still rather watch it than South Park.

>>6 Do not judge family guy off its most recent shit.
Judge it off seasons 1-6. How people who have given Southpark a fair chance could dislike it I dont understand.

>>8 Alright, fine, assuming what I did see was new, maybe I will give the first few seasons a shot. But when I first watched Family Guy, I tried to like it, I really did, but it just seemed like a bunch of stupid, pointless gags to me. And I just can't laugh at that.

Also, I kinda wanted to know why he didn't like South Park, not why he'd rather watch Family Guy.

I judge family guy, and south park based on all episodes. You just assume I don't watch it and make some baseless argument on the fact that I don't like it.

If they would change up their mannerisms in the sense of doing something new, rather than the same old bullshit, I may enjoy it more. But South Park can only rely on 1 thing, even if it's spit up into different ways that they do it.

You can color shit gold, but it still is shit. Thus you can repackage/relabel South Park how many times you want to, but it still is the same thing they had many years ago, and that is the failure that is SP. Even if that is what drew people in.

I was never a big fan of South Park. I just don't like the fact that a bunch of 8 year olds are cursing and making jokes that are very inappropriate for their age so much.

South Park is a show that I can say that I'm still a fan of to this day. While I do admit that it does have its bad episodes and that it does have a tendency to repeat itself, I think it can still manage to create funnier and more memorable moments after every season. I also have to say that I love the South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut movie. I found it so funny and the songs were very catchy that I do wish they could recreate another comedic musical film like that. Overall, I very much enjoy South Park and am excited for the upcoming season later this year.

>>11 Not sure if you understand the concept of judging. You can't judge southpark off all its episodes if you have not seen all its episodes. It seems fairly simple to me. Calling me baseless for asking to give southpark a chance is a little hypocreitical. If you eat a 4 course meal and 3 of such courses are amazing whilst one does not fit to par, you do not hate the whole meal.

Please tell me the one thing that Southpark relies on, I would be really interested to hear about it. From what I have seen they rotate hundreds of different ideas around the same base plot line much like any other show out there (Cartman becomes a pirate, they all get transported to imagionation land, satan wants to have a birthday party, crack basketball, butters becomes a Mexican etc.) so calling it varying degrees of spit is just idiotic.

You can certainly colour shit gold but it is still shit. However, southpark is shit made out of gold. It is rude, uncouth and incredibly offensive but it is also clever, brave and subtely willing to go to areas other shows would not dream of. Often a lot of the episodes have underlying themes (Ungandan pirates (Cartman becomes a pirate), Immigration racism (time travelers ep) and the imaginoned threat of global warning (peoples stupidity and sudden hype without willingness to do anything but complain and act fearful.) So please don't just label it as any ordinary shit again without reconsidering your opinion.

You are getting this from a real Southpark fanatic.

Where do you get off telling me I can't judge it, and how the fuck do you know what I've seen and haven't seen?

18 Name: ShotaroKaneda !radhZ7oYHc : 2013-03-17 23:32 ID:ol/bZPQL [Del]

>>9 Oh, whoops. I apologise.

>>17 How much have you seen then? And I didn't understand your point in >>11 either. What it this one thing that they keep relying on?

So either you haven't seen much and are making baseless accusations...
OR
...You decided for the fun of it to watch a show you obviously hate.
But woah man I better back off, you seem pretty tough.

Bumping back up because I am watching the entire series again from season one and loving it just as much.

21 Name: Solace !o0GOqY0U0w : 2013-08-11 12:41 ID:ox3Zcw2k [Del]

Oh man, I'd forgotten about this actually. Thiamor's completely reasonable reaction to me asking him to give South Park a complete chance. Man, this is a while back.

>>25 Why do seasons for cartoons always keep getting shorter?

Oh, and as for the thing I said about Family Guy thing in the description... I actually started watching Family Guy from season 1 a few weeks ago, and really, it's not that bad. I know it's stupid, and sometimes mind-numbingly so, but it's entertaining and good for a few nice, cheap laughs. Also, its characters are kinda lovable in a weird way.

It's not nearly as good as South Park, of course.

27 Name: Solace !o0GOqY0U0w : 2013-09-07 11:38 ID:LR8rNstg [Del]

>>26 Ever since Stewie stopped being an evil genius it has died down a little.

They are shortening the show because both Trey Parker and Matt Stone live busy lives and are also trying to do other things. Personally I don't blame them for attempting to branch out; I'm fairly sure one of them (Trey?) just wrote and produced his own musical, sometime last year. Hopefully that will also mean higher quality episodes.

28 Name: Loliprincess : 2013-09-07 16:42 ID:F9+TaMzl [Del]

Is it me, or does anyone else get the feeling that Trey and Matt would like to end South Park for good? I kind of get that vibe with a couple of their recent episodes. I don't know. Maybe I'm just over analyzing it.

29 Name: Neige !h45CN3bvL2 : 2013-09-08 01:01 ID:9aqs/Nzm [Del]

>>27 The musical was called The Book of Mormon, and I'm pretty sure they both wrote that.

>>28 And that's probably true, but I think they're contracted with Comedy Central to run the show for 20 seasons, so yeah, they literally have keep making them. This gets no complaints from me, but I'm sure they got sick of South Park ages ago.

Bump for new season airing.

Seems pretty good so far, covered a great range of topics (The NSA, social networking, crime TV, cable, the Zimmerman Case etc), and although the humour seems a tad diluted, it's still shaping up well.

Season 18 just started on September 24th with there premiere episode "Go Fund Yourself" (It makes fun of kickstarter and a football team called the Washington Redskins). It will air every Wednesday. Gosh, I love this show so damn much. It's the reason I'm an even bigger pervert and potty mouth (ha, potty mouth WTF?!) So I suggest watching it. You'll laugh like crazy!

41 Name: Akagami : 2014-09-30 16:55 ID:i/1Bdsp9 [Del]

I would have found the season premeire's episode funnier if it focused more on kickstarted and less on the whole Redskins thing because I just thought the way they implimented it wasn't that funny. Just boring
