"The story is set in Japan a millennium from now. Five children—the protagonist Saki, Satoru, Maria, Mamoru, and Shun—have been born and raised in a tranquil town that can be described as a utopia, overflowing with water and green foilage.
After a certain incident, Saki and the others come to realize the true nature of their world. The five throw themselves into life-threatening adventure and fighting to protect friends and a world on the brink of collapse."

Really, imho, the synopsis is *nothing* to go by if you want to predict how this show will warp, or unfold, and totally mind-f**k you!
14 episodes out so far.
I can't be the only one who is obsessed over this show week after week, right? Anyone else who is also a fan of this complex, psychological beauty? What do you think will happen next?

Oh god this show.

The setting and world this takes place in was really unique, but plotwise and character development-wise I feel like this show was an utter waste. I had kept with it for a while expecting for the show to eventually reveal what was going on, but there's just so little explanation to the minimal information given that it just becomes unfun to speculate what's happening and boring at all other times. The characters are certainly nothing to write home about, and the absolute 180 in their development after the time skip where they all became homosexual wasn't interesting or fitting, just awkward and bizarre. Tried to keep watching a few weeks past that, but this show just isn't doing it for me, and I personally wouldn't call it a "psychological beauty."

But that's just my honest opinion. :P

>>2 About the homosexual part. It's explained in the episode where the False Minishiro was talking about bonobos and how they release stress through sex and stuff. They're basically in homo relationships to relieve stress. Why it's homosexual only and not both hetero and homo is not explained, so I guess that's a fault. You could make lots of guesses, sure, like less drama and such.

But yeah, that's an explanation about the homosexual turn after the time skip.

So BASICALLY for the Background story.

That's Japan several hundred years from now. Some humans developed supernatural abilities, like levitation, telekinesis, etc. Normal humans somehow got wiped out, and moving on. Now, they live in their own distinct societies, training the younger generation for jobs and "functions" they would have in the future. These kids are monitored from birth until their 18th year, and if they show signs of becoming a "Fiend" or a "Demon", they are "removed". I forget which is which, but one is when their powers get out of control subconsciously. The other is when the restrictant on their brain from hurting other humans is "released" or "ignored" and they proceed to do so.
Each society has their own way of disposing of these "problem" children, but the society in the current setting, uses something called "Fell-Cats" aka copycats.
In order to keep "peace", the "government" practices mind-wiping and somehow, brainwashed residents to have extreme fear when leaving the town borders. They also developed a way to cause residents extreme pain should they have intentions of hurting another human being.

As for the homosexuality, it's actually bisexuality. It's the time of life where the students can experience all types of sexual activities, and thus, relieve themselves of sexual frustration, so that in the future, when they choose their partner, they won't cause disorder by cheating or such.

Think "The Giver", if you've read that book.

So they do it to relieve themselves of frustration, but pretty much all the conflict other than the Ethics Committee stuff is them being frustrated at each other.

Actually, it's several thousand years from now, not several hundred.

>>5 The 'Fiend' is the violent one who uses their power 'Cantus' to kill others. The 'Karma Demon' is the one with leaking subconscious and he/she has no way to control it. That way of causing extreme pain in one who hurts another human being/creature that you mention is called 'Death Feedback'. The society in the future uses Death Feedback, 'Tainted Cats/Fell-Cats' as different ways to prevent and eliminate problems of Fiends and Karma Demons.

Wao, personally, I find that the rate of information release is well-paced since the whole world-building process for this show is so complex. Besides, the show gives me the feeling that it is told from the first character's point of view so we only find out information as she does instead of getting info dump right away.

>>9 I'm do believe myself to be entirely in agreement with your opinion in the pace of storytelling.

Furthermore the story has only gotten more interesting in the recent episodes. Those that left because of the homosexual relationships really are missing out on quite the experience.

Just finished and it's now on my top 5 anime list. Beautiful, dark, and thoughtful story; it makes you really think about how society works and if we can ever truly achieve a perfect one. The plot and the way the anime was executed is very different from what we see in typical anime formats. The music, oh my god the music, the ending song, beautiful, and the way the music played throughout the anime worked so well with the atmosphere. People seemed to not give it a chance because of parts in it with bisexuality which, to me, is so stupid with LGBT being accepted throughout the world recently there shouldn't be a problem; I hope people give it a chance despite there being bisexuality it's a great and thoughtful anime that you won't regret watching.

This anime is very weird and interesting. Not to mention the suspense, which makes it all the better! I really loved this. The weirdness caught my attention and I was hooked! XD
