Hi, everyone. Fairly new to the forums; how ya' doin?
Anyway, I've been looking at the (lack of) topics here and was very surprised NOT to see a "Most Messed Up" thread. And so I started one. Here we go.
Just list some of the most messed up anime you've ever had the (dis)pleasure of watching. For me, it's...
1) School Days. The title song and brightness fools the hell out of you. What you think is going to be a typical slice-of-life romantic comedy quickly turns into a convoluted plot where the male protagonist(?) sleeps with everyone and causes a dangerous love triangle that ends in violent murder. Definitely not one of the best nights for sleep.
2) The When They Cry Series. I'm more concerned with Higurashi and the first arc of Umineko here. I knew from the title screen of both that they would be intense, but I didn't think...THAT. Shota and lolicon characters scratching out their own throats and killing each other; holy shit! Umineko was more focused on the magic but I'll tell you it still freaked me out.
3) Gantz. I'll just say this. READ THAT SHIT. It'll blow your mind.

The answer to the most messed up anime I've ever seen, simple..... Well, I'd say Elfen Lied. It was a very good show, don't get me wrong, with a beautiful story and so on, but the amount of gore they packed into 13 episodes (Including the OVA) Was just plain unBEARable (You know, all these bear jokes now days..... *cough* Persona 4 *cough*)

I remember reading a quote somewhere that, "if you take all of Gainax's best writers, put them all in a room together, and give them all the good drugs, you get FLCL. Definitely agree with people saying When They Cry and Elfen Lied, yet surprisingly they're also two of my favourites. Both had great stories despite (or maybe because of) the gore, and When They Cry does manage to keep you guessing (and fearing) the whole way through. And the OVAs, dear god! Went from scariest anime I've seen to the cutest and happiest, and still had me hooked.

School days and mirai nikki for me. Well, for school days, it was like romance gone wrong in the worst possible way (Though it has several endings in the game) and for mirai nikki, well it actually is good but Yuno's obsession with Yuuki is just plain creepy.

1. FMA Brotherhood. No matter HOW huge a fan I am.... the parts in this are pretty off. The opening will show you some stuff, but the truth be told... the way homonculi are made in the normal FMA is just disturbing,. There is violence, but its nothing much. Though... when Gluttony turns into the failed Door to The Truth... its pretty much scream your head off orth.
2. DEADMAN WONDERLAND. So... much... gore.... So much... sad.... story!
Dragon Ball Z. Really. This is fucked up. You watch it, and then your eyes want to tear out becuase they waste 12 episodes to make one planet explode. It would have taken 1 eoisiode to do that and save the killing the guy who blew it up for the next episode!!! And the characters are unbelivably fucked up!

Well, the obvious choice for me is FLCL, but I've only seen the first episode. So besides that, Durarara!!
I mean, I love it. It's one of my favorite animes, but it's pretty screwed up. The whole plot is a TWISTED LOVE STORY. There's gangs, a headless chick, psychotic people possessed by a sword that loves humans, a guy who claims to love all humans, and then takes delight in screwing with everyone's life, among other things. But, it's messed up in a good way.

The most messed up I can think of is still my favorite, Gantz. There is so many real world examples of how people favor violence and murder over peace. Real world examples are used to justify killing as well, along with opposing it. It just seems like what real people would do in a messed up killing game. Though the sexual stuff in it could have been taken out.

Mine were definitely Shiki (a total mindblown anime with vampires that will change your vision of humanity), School Days (the ending... OMG), Another (the mass of blood stopped to surprise me from the first episode), Elfen Lied (the same idea with Another) and maybe Bakemonogatari, because sometimes it got too vague and I barely understood the episodes (sometimes only).

It's a visual novel, but Saya no Uta.It's about a guy who gets brain surgery that ends up messing with his senses, causing him to see, smell, and feel everything and everyone as a gory blobs of organs and crap all while hearing everyone as scary static sounding monsters.He meets up with this normal looking girl that looks like she's about 8 years old and ends up fucking her brains out.Well, it turns out that she's a tentacle monster that kills and eats human beings.Some crazy guy rapes her and I'm pretty sure main character guy ends up killing him.He starts to eat human flesh, since everything else tastes like ass now.Apparently, to him, human flesh has " a herb-like scent, looks like a variety of succulent fruits,"Eventually, the main guy becomes a batshit ax crazy cannibal and starts doing some crazy poop.Crazy ass guy, amirite?There's three endings and none of them are happy.
Fun adventure.10/10.Would recommend to audiences 2 and up.Made by Gen Urobuchi, the "healing writer" that brought you Madoka.

Mysterious Girlfriend X. The actually story is pretty cute, and it has a good moral (Teenagers are too quick to jump into a sexual relationship and miss out on the fun of a not-quite-sexual one), but the reccuring spit plot is a bit icky, but surprisingly well played. It's still very messed up though. Not for those easily squicked.

It's been years since I've watched it, but I remember Akira being pretty messed up at points, in particular the thing with the creepy, old-looking kids, the preserved body parts of Akira, and the grotesque flesh-blob-baby thing that Tetsuo becomes at the end.

Umineko - They all die all the time, I loved higurashi because of the story and that I could at least fallow that. This was just unreasonable death with a confusing story. Keeping me interested and yet I felt like I was watching lost waiting for the next question to be answered when all you are left with in the end is nothing aaahhh! Lol
Blood C - Just boring and when it got to something good it usually involved allot of graphic stuff like ew, Not that I didn't like that.

Guys, "messed up" does not mean as much gore and blood as possible or very creative imagery, it means content used in a way that makes you feel "messed up".
Personally I would say End of Evangelion - the mixture of familiar feelings, hidden sexual meanings and violence left a huge impact on me.
Second place goes to Perfect Blue, a psychological thriller by Satoshi Kon from 1998 that I found very disturbing.
Finally there is Elfen Lied which definitely counts as messed up.
I would not say that for instance Another was messed up, it just had more blood than other anime. Which does not mean that Another is bad, I love it but I think its animation and supernatural aspects were more impressive than its gore. :)

I would say Elfin Lied considering it deals with so many mature themes and isn't shy at all when it comes to thinking of new ways to make you feel sorry for a character. Also (and more obviously) the sheer amount of gore.

black butler season 2 the new characters were so annoying to me and it was really weird, season 1 was much better but after I read the manga I found out that both seasons are messed up but season 1 was actually fun to watch it was amusing, but the new version they did for the anime is much better because it's exactly like the manga.
