In the year 2022, the Virtual reality Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (VRMMORPG) Sword Art Online (SAO) is released. With the Nerve Gear, a VR Helmet that stimulates the user's five senses via their brain, players can experience and control their in-game characters with their minds. But an unexpected event occurs on November 6, 2022 when Akihiko Kayaba, the creator of SAO, prevents the players from logging out. Akihiko issues them a challenge; if they wish to be free and log out of the game, they must reached the 100th floor of the game's tower and defeat the final boss. However, should their in-game characters die in the game, so will their bodies in the real world. As the game's 10,000 players try to accept their new deadly predicament, Kirito, a skilled player who tested the beta version of the game, is determined to reach the 100th floor and be free. Along with Asuna, his partner and love interest, and their friends, Kirito and his allies will face many obstacles and discovers the true purpose of SAO. As their adventure continues, they will also participate in other VRMMO games as well.

Has anyone read the manga? If so could you explain how they survive without eating real food?

I imagined through feeding tubes, they were basically like comotose patients.

During the "tutorial" in the manga the GM mentioned allowing the rigs to run on battery power while the players were transported to a hospital and hooked up to IVs for nutrients.

I've never read the manga but I want to see the anime really badly. I'll probably read the manga afterwards.

Finally got around to watching the first episode - This is going to be good. I can live with lacking magic in the world, since mages are broken little assholes anyway.

I thought I would get a much more .hackish feel from it though. While it is still reminiscient of .hack, what with the not logging out, dying and somewhat angsty main character, I feel like this is going to be a completely unique experience.

I'm liking the signs that the main character isn't going to sit and angst. Soon as he learned shit was going down, he got on the ball and started planning to power level his ass off.

Though I'm curious now... If PvP is a facet of the game.

i want to get trapped in a game like that. it would be fun

I like the concept of the anime, so I'll probably be watching, wether it turns bad or if it stays as good as it was shown in the first episode. Hoping for great stuff here, lot of potential with a great art-work.

I just saw the second episode and I personally liked the episode. Seems like this anime has potential to be awesome.

I keep expecting Kirito to break down and angst.

And then he keeps turning around and being a badass. It's like he's aware that he looks like a total failure and does everything possible to say "fuck that" instead.

Making himself a martyr to unite newbies and beta testers? hell yes. Scoring a badass cape out of the deal? More hell yes.

Asuna is also a refreshing change from most female romantic leads. She may not know how to party, but she's one hell of a solo player.

Where is the plot beside get to level 100? I dont see why everyone is saying this series is so good. Ive watched all the episode and they all felt so random and out of place. I had to triple check that I hadnt missed something after they introduced 5 people, who ended up no moving the plot forward.

Then, the next episodes showcase character interaction. Episode 5, 6, and 7 shows how his relationship with Asuna is currently and develops that. Does it develop it good? Ehhhh. But it's developing.

So really, they're not skipping a lot of his development, or at least not the amount you're implying they skipped. But then again, I'm not really picky with this stuff.

Believe it or not, at this point in the story, Kirito has had MUCH more character development up to this point than in the manga or light novels respectively. In the both, they skip the timeframe between the end of episode one up to the beginning of episode 8. Of course some events were merely thrown in to be chronological, such as ep 3, as this story was actually revealed much later into the series. episodes 2-7 were completely revolved around character development, seeing the different sides of Kirito, developing the supporting characters as well.

For anyone else, the timeskips are justly placed, as anyone who plays MMORPGs knows, a fair amount of any game becomes repetitive and is mainly grinding and questing, neither of which would reveal much more about Kirito than progressing in the story would.

Great anime. Here's hoping for a season 2. Long live A-1 animation studio~

I'm hoping future season, if they are in the work which they may not be, revolve around ALO and GGO. ESPECIALLY THE LATTER. Feminine-looking Kirito was kind og amazing.

It's weird how someone could turn a cliché "you die in a game you die in real life" scheme into something ingenious as this, is wonderful. I always liked the idea, but it was never really pulled off well.

watched yesterday the ep 14 end of the first light novel and first arc, and as you can see Yui did not become anything like aura, also in the next arc you will notice how this is quite different to .hack, I really like .hack, but if I were to choose between SAO/ALFHeim Online and The world I would go with SAO/ALFHeim with no doubt (because of the Virtual reality)
the series is scheduled to have as 58 said 24/25/26 episodes. and no GGO wont be included, maybe if they make a 2nd season that is that long they will include up to the novels "early and late" and "mothers rosario" wich would be GREAT!

I mean, wouldn't the nervegear have to have some outside signal to tell it to fry someones brain, which seems impossible if the interwebs connection is shut off? am... no you did not pay enough atention, the device has internal battery, it can fry your brain if any of the following happens:
-you TRY to remove the nervegear.
-you get disconnected from the game (one 2 hour exception was made so that people could be transfered from their homes to a hospital so that they could be kept alive).
-you die in the game.

and it is said by akihiko that people did try to remove the nervegear and hence people died due to that, around 200 people or so if my memory is right.

So the latest episode was pretty good. I was craving some more epic battle scenes (like episode 2 and 8 which were amazing. Although Alfheim Online isn't as good as the old <> it's nice to see it alternating between real life and in virtual reality. Good news is that SOA is getting a season 2~

I really want to see GGO and Mother's Rosario side story. I think they'd make a better anime. I like SAO but Kirito is basically an overpowered misogynist and the female leads are depicted as pretty useless in SAO. That's not entirely the case in GGO and Mother's Rosario.

My assumption as to why she has no idea what really went on in sao is just because he never talked about it. I mean, if he did, then she for sure would be able to connect two n two together long before now since he was named kirito in both alfheim and sao.
And another assumption for why he ignored her back in the day/dropped out of kido is also the same, they just never talked about it. She assumed about as much as I am right now!

truthfully i think the anime should have been longer,like a 100+ episode filling us in more on how kirito beats each floor or at least how he progresses through them. It's quite possible Sugou died. If you recall, he said that anything below pain absorber level 3 would start to physically affect your body. Since Kirito set it to level 0, the wounds physically affected his body. This means that when he got his hand cut off, and cut in half, his body started to die in those places. The physical effects most likely killed him.

With SAO's usual theme of moderate lightheartedness I was pretty damned suprised when Sugou did what he did. It seemed like a good ending point for the series but the "Seed" Kirito got given leads it to a pretty obvious sequal. I don't think he died, most likely had to respawn

I'm up to episode 9 now. Really enjoying it so far. I'm watching it back to back with Accel World. I watch an episode of SAO, then an episode of AW. Rinse and Repeat. I love them both. Makes me wish they'd hurry up and come out with a real NervGear or Neuro-Link. I mean, we're about to get DotHack-esque HMD's, which is awesome and all, but man do I really want a Neuro-Link.

I hate this show. It started off so well, but halfway through the writer just decided to pack up his metaphorical intelligence and just make this a incesturial romance/ tentacle rape hentai about the sweetest mum, dad and daughter ever. Just finished up SAO 25. Need to read the light novels now, because if everyone didn't end up in a guild I'm going to be sad.

Also - Klein back in the final episode. And Eigil. I didn't realize how much I missed those guys.

This fully immersive interactive MMO genre seems like a pretty legit idea - I really hope I'm alive when something like that takes off.

In SAO, a person can only alter hairstyle/hair color, nothing else.

The anime was great but I felt like the ending fell flat compared to the end described in the light novels. To anyone who enjoyed the series, I'd suggest reading the light novels, which were much, much better than the anime. The arcs post-ALO: GGO, Mother's Rosario and Alicization, are far more interesting and the characters are rather well developed.

*SPOILER ALERT* I was here from the beginning. I stuck with SAO from the very beginning to the very end and will do the same for the second season if there is one. Having seen it though I have to say I was disappointed. It almost seemed like they just drove the last 10 episodes into the ground. They had to use tentacle rape and actual rape to convey the hurry to save Asuna but they could have done without it. The addition of incest was completely unneeded and actually hurt the series in my opinion.
TL;DR The series was good up until episode 14. After that it just went downhill.

Oh, and has anyone watched the Sword Art Offline specials? Funny as hell.

Hands down, 2nd most favorite anime!

(SPOLIER) I really liked the first arc, I immediately fell in love with the oblivious dual-blade Kirito and uniform-clad sword-wielding Asuna. However the Alfheim arc was so-so to me. Asuna just didn't strike me as the frail damsel in distress type of girl.
Plus there was major plot holes. Firstly, Yoruko and Kains' fake death could have been discovered earlier if Asuna checked her friends list and noticed that her friend, Yoruko, hadn't died. Secondly, Yui "died" but Kirito transformed her into an object, thus Yui's heart became an object. Yet they didn't even try to revive her like Silica's Pina. Thirdly, when Kirito entered Alfheim, he managed to somehow revive Yui because he had her heart, but the thing is, he didn't, Asuna was wearing it as a necklace.
The setting of an online game that you can really immerse yourself in really stuck home for me. It was a little romanticized but I loved it, the first arc that is, I deem the second arc as unnecessary.

My first favorite anime

(SPOILER) Well Mr Rawr I have a few things to say about your list of faults
1. How do you know people get deleted out of your friends list when they die? It might be manual(Not to mention Kain wasn't in her friends list).
2. From the numrous times it shows people being added into friends lists throughout the show every time it requires a confirmation from the other person. It is quite possible Yoruko could of deleted Asuna and Kirito off her friends list with them being none the wiser. Asuna would not of checked immediately so there would of been a window in which that could of happened.
3. Yui was a program, thusly her revival conditions would not be anywhere near similar to that of a players pet. As for the duped heart issue, I think that is a hole.
For the most part although, try and stretch a little for every conclusion that needs jumping to before calling it a hole.

Our numbers don't really match but I'll try to explain with more detail how I came to those conclusions.

1&2. In an episode when Asuna and Kuradeel visit Kirito, she began by remarking that Kirito still hasn't died yet. Kirito replies by saying that if he did die, she would know because he was on her friend list. And Yoruko was on Asuna's friend list as Asuna was able to track her in the snow field. So I was reflecting on that theory.
3. It didn't strike me that Yui's heart couldn't be treated the same way as pet's. I presumed a heart was something that could be revived. So that's quite a bit of assumption on my part.

First, the whole Kirito with Yui situation. I recall them saying that when someone gets married, their inventory becomes shared, so there's that.

Loved the show, though not the best ever by any estimate. I thought it did have one of the best romances and Yui is also great. It was one of the few animes where I care alot about the characters (Naruto and Bleach are examples where this is missing)

Just so we're all on the same page, there are already two seasons of Sword Art Online. The first ends when Kirito beats the game. The second season is everything after that. Season one aired during the Fall Block and season two aired during the Winter Block. So when you're all asking for a second season, you actually mean to be asking for a THIRD season.

I loved the first 12 episodes but i dont like the rest AS MUCH as the first episodes. I think that is how they were trapped and they had to actually have lives inside of sao

I think it's an average anime and I give it a 3/5.

I don't see much of an actual plot line, but I do see where they intended to put one. I think that it needs to be more detailed. Each episode skips an absurd amount of time, and the main character is nearly immortal by the fifth episode. It's kinda not fun at all.

Really loved the first arc of this, and considering how much went on in twelve episodes, I really enjoyed it.
Not so much on the second arc, but whatever.
Hopefully a new season (if/ when they make it) will live up to the same standard as the first arc.

Completely agree. The fact that her character changed from equally helping Kirito and fighting alongside him into (literally) sitting waiting to be rescued in a cage was rather off-putting.
That, and the fact that the main antagonist of the second arc was a two-dimensional (speaking character wise) pervert who wanted to make money and rape a girl, who's only purpose now is for 'your tears are delicious' image macros. Pic semi related.

Although the fact that the entire death element was taken out and everyone made into fairies was rather odd, it didn't have the same feeling as the first arc.
Oh well, guess we'll see if anything happens.

Fuck this shit, i want a second season and i want it now..

I love it x) Asuna is one of my cosplay characters ^-^ Although I feel like they could have made it longer. It has such a great & unique plot, and with it only being 25 episodes, it felt crunched.

I really love the anime!

Finally got around to marathoning it last night, it was ok. Not the second coming of christ people were hyping it up to be when it was still airing, but enjoyable nonetheless.

I also know about the light novels, and I still don't think the next seasons are going to be particularly good. They will undoubtedly continue the fanservice in the following seasons with the prospects of new characters (since the LN's practically ditch Asuna more and more as Kirito explores other games, only hinting at their relationship when it's relevant). It also loses a lot of the deeper story that it felt like the first season had. From what I've seen, the next few light novels are/seasons will be more like fillers building up to conclusion using badly interjected foreshadowing.

Don't get me wrong, I like the story concept and the games themselves, especially in the other light novels of the series. I just feel that the written story is not put together well, and the anime beyond the first season is poorly executed and will continue to be so, particularly with its unnecessary fanservice-designed, anime-limited characters that only serve to distract from the story.

If they do continue following the light novels, I already know that they're going to use the change in scenery as fuel to shove in more stereotypical female characters to suit the requirements of the male fanbase's dicks. Being a female viewer, I don't really understand the point of having non-plot-dependant characters whose only purpose is to give the clueless main character another romantic follower.

If I wanted a harem anime, I would have watched a harem anime. I just want to watch an anime about a badass kid playing in an online game save lives by (insert future plot events that I won't spoil for you guys here) without having to keep a fucking flow chart of all the non-advancing, one-sided relationships every female side character has for him.

BUT, I do still love the art/animation/music collaborations for this series. It all flows perfectly in that regard. And otherwise, I do love the first season.

I watched this anime. I thought it was pretty good. It was interesting to see the character development of Kirito, especially after he was released from the game. The second half (ALFheim Online) felt a little too fast for me even though SAO and AO were the same length in episodes. AO was interesting as well because it featured some breaks in the VRMMO-ness by entering the real world. The ending of it all was pretty good too but no spoilers!

Just saw the 1st episode of SAO... words can not describe how in awe I was of this. The 1st episode alone made me instantly love it, it just replaced Death Note as my favorite anime... It did take away my dream of wanting an VR game though by turning it into a fear. Other then that its epic!

Question: Is the SAO series, as a whole (manga, novels, animes, etc, still on-going or no? I ask because I just started watching the anime on Toonami, but I know theres lots of SAO mangas & novels out there.

the first episode was pretty great, the first 3 episodes in general were pretty good (but not great), the rest of the first half was kinda enjoyable, but some of the episodes were really shitty. The second

The first season was intriguing, exciting and thrilling. The concept also was amazing! But unfortunately season two was a let down. The sister of Kirito irritated me to the point in which i almost stopped watching the anime. Overall Sword Art Online is an amazing anime, but season two isn't worth watching... ^__^

it was an awesome anime but i was rather disappointed with the ending.

The first half of the series was amazing~~ I recommend it to everyone. My friends watched it and they loved it. The ending wasn't as great as the beginning though. Looking forwards to season two

I loved Sword Art Online, but only first 14 episodes, and I consider it the only Sword Art Online. Everything after episode 14 DOES NOT EXIST FOR ME. Everything else is just that bad. Alfheim was horrible. Episodes 1-14 FTW! SAO starts at episode 1 and ends at episode 14. END OF STORY.
It made sense, it had dignity, it didn't rely on cheap tricks, fanserice wasn't severe, there were no tentacles, no sister-loves-brother, no damsel in distres... Aincrad is the only SAO.

It's really sad that Sinon got more legitimate character development in 2 episodes than Kirito and Asuna did combined over the course of 28.

SAO II is slightly better than SAO I because of the relative lack of Kirito. He really is the worst part of this franchise. That, and the writer not knowing how to write interesting characters.

I'll stick around to mock you dear SAOquel, but I have such low expectations that I'd be shocked if you disappoint even more than I think you will. Have a blast.

I know a lot of people wonder why Kirito and Asuna make it out of SAO alive. I think the reason is because there is a counter that gives them a certain amount of time in that sky place before their brains are fried. Remember the percentage of process thing Kirito pulled up when he was waiting? This is also how someone could be brought back to life ten mnutes after they "die" (The Saint Nick gift you can get on Christmas does that.) So because Akehiko K. was defeated and Aincrad was destroyed before Kirito and Asuna's deaths could be "processed," that's why they were able to make it out alive. My theory anyways ^_^

Season 2 really has a lot of QUALITY going on so far, makes me curious what happened to all the budget they have. A few plotholes here and there, but nothing really more than expected of SAO. Plus, The last half of episode 5 was a total trainwreck. The best part out of all of it was Sinon half-naked.

I've recently finished the first season.It wasn't as good as I thought it would be.I really don't understand what's with all the hype.

First of all the first 8-10 episodes were mainly fillers.In my opinion,seeing Kirito leveling up and clearing dungeons would've been much more interesting than what he does in his spare time.

Second of all,they shouldn't have ended SAO so fast.The second game was kind of lame,but at least it wasn't so fillerish.

I'm not sure if I'm going to watch the next season.Is it any better than the first one?

Fairy Dance Arc: Incest, really? Not to mention that whole tentacle scene. Pretty Bad

Phantom Bullet Arc: Very Good. Conceptually, a great arc, showing characters dealing with PTSD and such.

Calibur Arc: Why is this even a thing

Mother's Rosario Arc: Fantastic! Probably the most emotional this series has ever gotten. Great arc.

A very addictive anime indeed. After the four Seasons I couldn't help but wanting another one. And also, Kirito was quite a ladies-man, Without him even wanting that (that being the funny part). 10 out of 10 for a good sci-fi and teenage love story.

There is a rumor that SAO III will be released after the video game products are finished. Remember how Kirito said that he had multiple accounts? well, he has been to many other worlds in the manga series, the 3rd season will also cover the fact of, ( spoiler alert ) he becomes the owner of his own version of nerve gear and starts to produce his own game world, and continues on mechatronics to make a humanoid robot for yui ( His Daughet from SAO/Alfheim. Your welcome :P

SAO is a decent anime, but Log Horizon is basically a better version that has less romance (a plus in my book, usually) and there are a lot of better animes out there
