Angel Beats! takes place at a high school acting as a limbo for those who have died, where students learn to give up any lingering attachments they still have from life before passing on. Those in the afterlife school can still feel pain as they did when they were alive, as well as dying again, only to awaken later with no injuries. The story follows the main protagonist Otonashi, a boy who lost his memories of his life after dying. He meets Yuri, a girl who invites him to join the Afterlife Battlefront (死んだ世界戦線 Shinda Sekai Sensen (SSS)?), an organization she founded and leads which fights against God for the cruel fates the SSS members experienced in life. In the SSS, there is a four-girl band named Girls Dead Monster that acts as a diversion during missions, and an organization called the Guild that mass produces weapons out of dirt and supplies them to the SSS. Their only enemy is Angel, a girl who has supernatural powers and fights against the SSS. Angel creates her powers with the aid of a computer program called Angel Player. The rest of the afterlife school is populated by a large number of "normal" students and teachers Yuri deems "non-player characters" (NPCs) as they are not human, but look and act the part.

I got watery eyed at most of the episodes, sometimes teared up. Especially the last episode, 4-5 tears sneaked out, and i almost never cry. I tried to get my friends to watch this but almost none of them watch anime. In my top three list (haven't watched that much anime). Cant wait for season 2!!!!

This was an awesome anime, I Definitely Recommend it! It suites too many things, like music, action and romance, but its also hilarious, which is good otherwise i wouldn't have been able to stop crying at the sad parts x) but really, really amazing! one of my favorites ~ i wish there was a season 2~ though i wonder what they would do with it? they could do something like a mini series with how they get along when they are reborn/alive again, how they could meet each other again, that'd be awesome :)

its explained kinda otonashi wanderd to that place by mistake he lived a good life but like they said every once in while a person goes there by accident. so he lost his memories and ended up going there by accedent befor he could be reencarnated. it probly just took him awile to get there.

I have seen a lot of anime, but Angel Beats was definitely the most beautiful one I have seen to date. As for how Otonashi's heart was given to Kanade and she entered the afterlife before him, You must conclude that it can take some souls a while to get there, and so Kanade was able to live for a while after Otonashi died but actually arrived long before he did.

Anyways, I do love this anime but this plot hole has always confused me. Anyways to Mashbio as my answer to you, they do not explain but here's my theory. **SPOILER ALERT** Otonashi is hung up in the next world because though he wanted to save a life by becoming a doctor, he never did. At the last minute, he signed an organ donor card to help but he did not live long enough to know whether that helped, and I don't think he even lived long enough to know they got saved. This means he has unresolved problems. Now he didn't appear in the next world till after Angel was there because that was how he could resolve his problem. He had to realize that he did end up saving someone, but for that to happen ironically, that same person would have to die (to end up in the high school world place) his soul gets held back because even if he went there and saved everyone he wouldn't resolve his own problem until Angel got there. Hence Angel got there first!
I invite others to give me their theories because that's just how i rationalized this.
And one last note: If something held Otonashi's soul back until Angel got there, that would indicate something at least slightly sentient in the universe was controlling where these souls go, implying there is a god!

I was persuaded to watch the anime and I'm a person who cries pretty easily. So around episode 10 I burst into tears. A few had leaked here and there throughout the series, but 10-13 had me in tears.
