There was already a Gintama thread, but I figured I should give it a nicer one.

So yes. Summary. Gintama is about a young boy named Kurosaki Ichigo who one day becomes a shinigami and-

Oh wait. That's not it. Uh, sorry, it's easy to get confused.

Gintama is...a lot of things. The synopsis put simply goes something like this: It's around the Edo Period and aliens called "Amanto" have invaded Earth and pretty much taken over it. The samurai put up a fight, but they were defeated and are now pretty much going extinct. So people have to adapt to all the changes happening. Same goes for our protagonist, Sakata Gintoki, who makes a living out of doing odd jobs for whoever is willing to pay him. And, you guessed it, he gets into a lot of trouble.

And thet's how the story starts. Not that Gintama has much of a 'story', so to say. It more or less goes in which ever direction it feels like going.

It's primarely a comedy anime. It's about dick jokes, parodying anything and everything, general mayhem and denying the existence of the 4th wall. It's also a story about surrogate families, second chances, long-standing frindships and generally making the best out of what life gives you.

It's not an anime whithout flaws and it's actually very hit and miss with its humour sometimes. But it's cool because it never takes itself too seriously and is never afraid to raise the bar and surprise you with some action or drama and character development. It has varying degreed of success, yes, but it never gets dull. The Gintama 'magic' is that it mannages to go for ~250 episodes and still doen't feel like it's losing its touch.

There's only so much I can do to explain this mess of an anime, so if you wanna know what the hell this Gintama thing is go and watch it!

I miss this show so muhuhuhuch.

I'm not a fan of Gintama. It's not that funny in my opinion, and the story and art aren't that good, either. I've seen some semi-humorous clips and heard some good quotes, but I honestly did not enjoy watching it. I think I got around episode seven or so before I just gave up.

I love Gintama! The anime is awesome, the manga is epic, there are good jokes, good fight scenes, and a great storyline! It certainly is a unique series! It doesn't start off too well, but by the time you get to the Benizakura arc, you're hooked~

I think the only problem was that the first two episodes were anime-only fillers, and they weren't really very good.

But after that... man... I think every episode was good. Sometimes the humour has been kind of questionable, definitely not for everyone, but not even the most serious of episodes has ever failed to make me laugh. I'm eagerly awaiting the next season, keeping caught up with the manga in the meantime...

The first season is pretty slow but it introduces all the characters. Like >>12 said once you get past this arc you'll be obsessed. The humour is immature and sometimes childish but thats what Gintama is, like that one place where it's ok to love something imperfect. It's not just humour though, it can have real sincere moments that leave you in awe, what with the mangaka's ability to produce such witty and sometimes even inspirational lines. Maybe it's because i'm such a huge fan of the show but I really think people should give it a try.

And Benizakura is still one of my favorite (and one of the best) arcs, despite there being other longer and more complex ones. The fact that it was the first to change the mood so drastically might have something to do with it, but it's also the only one to have Takasugi properly involved. Joui4 situations are automatically awesome. Since the he's just been laying low manipulating in the background, damn him.

I Love Gintama, even though their setting is a mess it is quite unique and interesting. Unlike other Shounen Jump main protagonist Gintoki has no special moves or whatevs. He also doesn't have any big goals like being a Pirate King or Hokage (probably his goals is for his hair to be straight!)

anyways, the show is quite humorous especially with the various parodies. It also has some awesome arcs that features great battle scenes. Though the art is not that good in the first season but today I might say it is good.

I recommend this specially if you like Comedy and Action Genre.

This anime show is awesome. I've watched it my WHOLE LIFE. (or at least it seems like it.) This show really deserves more fans.

This is seriously up in the top three of favourite animes I have ever watched. It varies in turns from light hearted comedy to hectic action or intense drama. It deffinitely picks up steam as it gets going and gets all the characters introduced and it makes wonderful use of breaking the fourth wall. I think the quote from a review that sums it up the best is "Gintama is not amazing because it is really funny for 20 episodes, rather it is amazing because it stays consistantly funny for all 200."
I am so suprised I have never heard of it before, its strangely unkown. Heavily recomended.

Bump and things so it's not just a bump.

There'll be a second Gintama movie this summer, announced to come out in theaters in Japan on July 6th. The title is Gintama: The Final Chapter - Be Forever Yorozuya, which sounds all serious and stuff, but is most likely not. The story will be an original by mangaka Hideaki Sorachi, which makes me feel really excited about it.

Also the show's latest run, Gintama, Enchousen, will be ending next week.

It's been mostly serious story arcs airing lately, it makes Gintama feel almost like a normal shounen anime, it's weird. And too intense for me, I need episodes of random shenanigans to relax with. This anime owns my soul anyway.

So was that movie preview they showed about "How it all began" just another prank then? I can never tell when they are joking or not these days... Episodes 150-200 were my favourite but like Bang-bang said ever since then its kind of become more serious. This anime is still fucking awesome though and is tieing in my top second anime of all time.

When it comes to Gintama it's better to assume it's trolling until you're 110% sure it's true.

Anyway, Gintama is by far my favourite anime and stands out amongst all the comedy I have ever watched, Western included. It's parodies are amazing, gag jokes hilarious and episode ideas ingenious. The characters are all on varying levels of amazing and it is one of the few comedy anime's I have seen that actually gets better and better over time rather than fizzling off.

Even without the comedy Gintama would still be up in my top 10. The characters when serious are artfully done and the fight scenes are on just the right intensity level. Gintoki is one of the best possible protagonist models because he simply lacks in any ambition, something which really makes him stand out among the rest.

This anime is so damn amazing but so damn underated, a lot of people I know avoid it because they heard it has too many cultural jokes but those are usually explained in the subs anyway! I would consider this a must watch and highly recommend it to all. I've actually seen it all once but still rewatch episodes from day to day just to keep some of its comedy in my life.

p.s. Don't hate Gintoki just because he has naturally wavy hair.
ALSO, don't judge off the first 5 episodes, they are quite ordinary. In fact, its about episode 25 where things really start getting good.

Other than that idk, the movie could be an AU, about time travel or basically anything, knowing the show. The fact that Shinpachi looks so cool in particular makes me think that those designs won't really be used for anything serious. Most often it's Jump series (One Piece, Dragon Ball, Bleach and Naruto sometimes) or Gundam, but sometimes you get references to things that aren't anime, like Japanese celebrities or voice actors, video games, history things, it's impossible to get them all. Depending on what subs you get they're sometimes explained.

But then there's the stuff you pick up on on your third rewatch of an episode or from hearing about it... But as long as you enjoy the show and the humor as a whole it's fine even if things go over your head!

Since I noticed it's subbed on Youtube here's the Gintama Haru Matsuri 2010 event if anybody's interested. It's from after the first series ended and before the Benizakura movie. There's some cute extras and voice actors goofing around. It's fun.

I can see what you're saying about the business perspective. It's just they might want to anime to end strong rather than fizzle and die, that is my main concern. Also the trailer talks about it being based off the last episode of Gintama' (That's quite possibly a troll though) and the director has mentioned in an interview that they "Had a great run, but it might be time to close shop" which just makes me scared.

So much of me just wants to/does think it is them pulling one over the fans for like the 6th time.

I must see it now. Apparently the initial release in Japan was really successful, too. Still curious as to whether the show will keep going/stop.

Since Gintama doesn't care about the fourth wall there are a bunch of times when its gorilla author has popped up, so the watchers are familiar with him even if they don't read his work directly.

Which is why I thought that maybe an interview with Sorachi (and his editors, about the beginnings of Gintama, how he comes up with ideas etc) or some other things he's said might be interesting to read for some.

Gintama is simply awesome, hilarious! It's one of my favourite animes, too. It maybe has mostly funny moments, but (even if there aren't much like in another anime) it has it's serious moments as well. I've cried sometimes, I'd dare to tell.

They feel a bit different than what comes later, but they've got some nice stuff. And a lot of character introductions. 13 was really nice and has one of my fav quotes to date. 17 has Takasugi and some other interesting stuff. 25 was like a benchmark episode though, it was ridiculously good.

Fun fact, the manga series was originally going to be about the Shinsengumi (elite police), with Hijikata as the main character. Eventually, the writer decided that they would do better as supporting characters and made up Gintoki. Also, just about every major member of the Shisengumi (or the rest of the show for that matter), is based off somebody who lived in real life Edo Japan.

There's a site you can order the 2nd movie on Blu-Ray. It's a special edition including an art book, 6 posters, 3 CDs/DVDs (not really sure what they are), and a booklet containing the autographs of all the cast in the movie.
Only problem is that it's VERY pricy. Well, it's a special edition, so you can't expect any less. Altogether is 9000 yen, which is $87.55 in US dollars...

I'd still recommend watching the movie dub for the experience itself lol. Some of the voices were ok, Kagura's in particular was pretty good, but some others, oh man.

Gintama director Yoichi Fujita remarked during a stage event on Saturday to mark the theatrical opening of the Gekijōban Gintama Kanketsu-hen: Yorozuya yo Eien Nare (Final Gintama: The Movie: Be Forever Yorozuya) film that "Even though we have been thinking that this film would mark the end, if the movie is a hit, I believe that the higher-ups would definitely not keep quiet about it." Voice actor Kenichi Suzumura also added that it is the wish of both the staff and the higher-ups that the anime franchise continue. The second film in the franchise had been touted as featuring an all-new "final" story written by original manga creator Hideaki Sorachi.

Heya I've got an umm speculative question.

What do you guys (I use plural, but it's basically just Solace) think is going to happen to Takasugi at the end of the story? As in, will he die? Will he live? Will he reconsider his position? What's your hunch as to what might happen and on the other hand what would you like to see happen?

It's a masterpiece. To answer the question above, I'd say that nothing will ever happen. Ever. lol it seems that's what Gintama is all about; trolling you into thinking there's a plot. But there IS something going on, it only took like, 200 episodes to show some progress. So, if Gintama lasts maybe, 1000+ episoides, then yeah, it might actually finish the story. After showing their past in the Joi War, Takasugi will clash with Gin and eventually reazlize he was wrong, according to standard Shonen rules. But... This is Gintama. Takasugi is just another character in which Sorachi can play around and will forever remain a villain, and the beauty of Gintama: No one has to care. Everything can stay that same 1000+ episode and it would still be okay. In my opinion, at least.

Sure "plotty" moments in Gintama are few and far between and the show is mostly comedy, but it didn't set out to be an action series to begin with so that's fine. I don't really care about "when", I'm not in a hurry. I just want "what ifs".

I actually don't consider Takasugi dying completly out of the question, like a redemptive death or something like that. Of course that would be terribly depressing, and it would deprive me of my dream of having all four Joui do things together. I don't think he's going to have a sudden change of heart through the power of friendship either though. But him and Gin ending up on the same side at one point is a thing that I really wanna see happen.

If you look at all the flashbacks, it's clear that his character is driving towards evil through depression and a twisted sense of righteousness, kind of like Pain from Naruto. I don't think he'll die because it seems that Horachi is always extremely reluctant to kill major characters. My prediction is that he'll turn good in some unexpected and most likely comical way that we will never see coming.

But who fucking knows what Horachi is going to do next? He could just be a vampire-robot-deathmachine-clone of the original Takasugi.

What is this final chapter? Is Gintama ending? A lot of people have asked this, but it’s not ending. I just think this could be the last fireworks for the Gintama anime, so please stop sending me letters of protests. Every time the anime ends, people will ask “Why did it end!!” But I’ve said many times, Sorachi-sensei won’t ask about the anime. I’ve never requested the anime to end or to continue. Besides, it’s not like the world will decide to continue airing the show just because I said something. It’s the same this time. Since I was asked to come up with the story for the movie, I was told that this could be the last chapter, so it got this title and this material. That’s all there is. I wasn’t trying to stab the anime that’s on the verge of dying. I wasn’t going to use this title in the first place, but before I knew it, the final chapter got attached to it. Well, if you watch the movie, you’ll understand what the title really means, so all I can say right now is to please watch the movie. Anyway, I really treated this as the final chapter when I was drawing it, or maybe I should say, it wouldn’t be surprising if this really became the final chapter, but I’m in this mindset every time I draw a long story arc. In any case, I worked really hard to come up with the story, so I hope you’ll enjoy it."

I honestly can't believe it took me SO LONG to watch this show... It's been recommended to me for years and years.

This is easily one of the best shows I've ever seen. I've never been flung through so many emotions during it's serious arcs. I'll find myself laughing my ass off one minute, bawling my ass off the next, first out of sadness then out of happiness, then laughing again. Fuck.

Some sort of character book or something like that came out and it has Sorachi commenting on his characters (translation here here and here and one more). There's nothing new revealed or anything, but it's Sorachi's typical style, so it's fun to read.

I watch gintama for awhile, so it got boring after awhile of it so I just watch it sometimes in a few days at a time.

I love Gintama...It is my number one top favorite anime. The comedy, for me, is very funny, I laughed as hell. The sad parts, especially those serious arcs pack with feels, send me to tears. Gintoki particularly is a very unique main lead. He's not the typical type of "hero" you see in other anime. He's a really straightforward lazyass dude most of the time, although when he gets down to it and reveals his badass self, he's probably the most mature and knowlegdable main hero I have ever seen. The lessons and quotes in Gintama are great, I learn and a lot and cry a lot from it, the actions are awesome and really cool, I love it when Gintoki goes mad and act like a real beast.

I have not read the manga cause I heard recently it's packed with a lot of serious and feely stuffs going on and I'm not ready for the intensity yet. OTZ But I'll watch it when this season ends. I love Gintama, it can be so funny and intense, best anime in my opinion. Although, I do still wish they can lessen a bit on the comedy for anime...XD

Personally love Gintama. It's very... different from most shows. Like it's totally not serious at all, and it really makes me laugh. Though the art is kind of average (compared to some other shows) but all the characters are very rich. About content... you can say that there is no storyline but the story is great. You'll only understand what I mean if you watch the show honestly ;). Because this is a show that goes everywhere and everything, it has the comedy, the sci-fi, the action, romance, touching storylines. It's almost like One Piece but more adult-focused and going in an unknown direction. But I love it. It really is a unique show created by the really talented Sorachi-sensei. :)

Latest episodes are really funny. I've already read the manga before but still hilarious. I wonder who's going to switch places.

Apparently in an interview, Sorachi mentioned he won't tell people if the series is ending or not (so something abrupt I assume) because he once it to end the true gintama way on a good(/funny) note and doesn't want people expecting more.

The second half of the Silver Soul Arc is airing on July the 8th!!!! And the manga apparently doesn't seem to be ending whatsoever!!!! The hype is everywhere!!!

If you haven't seen it you must!! The first 3-50 episodes are a bit hard to get through(apparently) but once you hit a certain arc that's when you'll be hooked! My favourite arc was the Baragaki Arc.

Final movie confirmed for January 8th 2021! I’m really hyped about it. Well...it really ended. This anime is really great and is definitely my all time favorite. (Hopefully this is not sorachi’s last work). If there’s a spyair song I’m gonna cry.
