This anime is about a orphaned boy named Simon who lives underground who dig tunnels to connect with other villages, as society can't live on the surface. Simon's older, foster brother, Kamina, always fantasizing about seeing the surface of the world, once there as a kid. One day there lives change forever when Simon finds two mysterious object while digging, one an object that looks much like a drill and a small robot.

From what I heard, Neon Genesis Evangelion one of the is the best post-apocalyptic mecha anime out there, but Gurren Lagann comes in a close second. The characters are memorable, one influencing the entire story, and it never ceases to give the fans what they want without going overboard.

Bump because this is the best show in the universe. I would watch that NGE show if I had the time. I am actually new to mecha anime and I am glad Gurren Lagann is my first.

You know, the 'without going overboard' part in the opening post is kind of funny to me.

In a sense it's true, even with all the ridiculousness going on it still manages to stay within some manner of limits. But then again, Gurren Lagann is all about going overboard. And then taking the board, throwing it into space, and going over it AGAIN.

I'm cirrentlt on ep 10 and I love this anime. I didn't like how Kamina died though. :_(

Honestly, I wouldn't say he was an ass. I think the only mistake Rossiu made was not being genre savvy.

He tried using cold logic and harsh compromises (which in another show with a similar setting would have made sense) in a world where people can move the moon with the sheer power of their will. He got everything wrong, which especially after Simon did it the right way, made him look pretty bad in comparison.

I'm a few episodes into the post-timeskip part. So far I've loved the series, though I'm not looking forward to the ending... Already know how the whole Nia deal ends up. What can I say, I'm a sappy type where those things are concerned.

I only recently got to watch this. My friend badgered me for the longest time to watch it and I eventually downloaded the entire series. And... I ended up watching the entire series in one sitting. I got hooked fucking instantly. Man, I just love it. I can't wait until I get better internet so I can download the movies.

Sorry to be "That guy" but I gotta say that whole second best thing has gotta be debatable. If one show (Evangelion or Lagann) is better than the other is more or less ones preference of "Reconstruction vs. Deconstruction", also this is gonna sound like a low blow, but at least Gurren Lagann had an ending.

And what an ending it was! Universally wide battles with obsurdly sized mechs, fighting an oppressive godlike being, galaxies thrown as shuriken! Flinging big bangs! I don't see how it could have GOTTEN any better!

Gurren Lagann definately falls somewhere in my top five anime. There are very few people that I know that don't like this show. I had my MOTHER watch this, and she loved it! The only person that didn't like it was one of my roomates, but he's the kind of person who just hates on everything. :/
BTW, I've been trying to find a good HQ sourse for the uncut version of episode 6. Does anyone know where to find one?

I finally just discovered the scene from the very start is him in an alternate future where he chose to become the evil overlord and conqured all the other spiral races. Hence he says "All the stars in the skies are our enemies" In that first scene but in one of the last scenes of the last episodes Simon says "All the stars in the skies are our friends." Implying what could of happened.

The first time I saw kamina I die, in my head I was like "anime over!"

I love Gurren Lagann, it is my 2nd favourite anime series and I love practically every minute of it... Every minute except from the ones where Kamina's on screen. I think he's incredibly overrated and almost made me stop watching. Fortunately, I waited until episode 8 (which admittedly, has one of the best death scenes ever) and got to an amazing series. Really glad I watched it, definitely going to watch it again multiple times.

I love it that people have no regard for spoilers on this thread. As if anyone who might read things in it has watched the show.

I got spoilered for ep. 8 by this thread's predecessor. So if you could be so kind to spare others.

HAHA i love how whenever I make a thread, it's bad, but then, that forces others to make a thread about the same show and make it a better thread... interesting, I think I'm gonna keep doing that for a lot of good shows.

Anyway, I loved this show, I mean, who doesn't? You have to be crazy in the head to not like it. And I'm pretty sure this doesn't just go for me, but I think almost everyone's favorite character is and always will be Kamina. Second is probably Simon (the main character) or Yoko (the fan-service character who actually plays an important role as well). So, i just want to say that this show was the world for me for about a whole month. Nothing has ever been like that for me before. It's all because of the badass characters, the comedy, the inspirational quotes, the bromance, the love, the action, the GTA type scenes, and the complete randomness that the show is so much better than others. The only actually bad part of this show is that it isn't as well known as Durarara, Baccano, and all those incredibly popular shows, despite the fact (fact, not opinion) that this show is about just as good as those.

Speaking of Gurren Lagann though, I think it's been a good two years since I marathoned the whole series in one glorious night of anime greatness. I think it might be time for a rewatch.

Gurren Lagann is in my top 3, and also my top mecha anime. I understand not everyone likes it, because it has insane logic and some of it just doesn't make sense (attacks using galaxies in the battle against the anti-spiral?) But personally, those things are what makes it a great show. It breaks boundaries and conventions, producing a show that could pierce the heavens and a storyline that could ripple the universe.

I liked it. Until season 2. Then the taste in my mouth soured. (Season 1 is still enjoyable though at least)
