Anime Wisdom (76)

1 Name: Sejin !PKt//nzxc2 : 2011-10-02 20:24 ID:+3DtcXdW [Del]

First off, let me start by saying this is not the usual kind of quotes thread. I know there are at least a few of those on this board, but I think this is different enough to warrant its own thread. So, on to the biz:

I'm sure that there have been times when you've been watching an anime and there's a piece of dialogue that just strikes you as oddly wise. You sit there for a second and think "Wow, that's actually pretty true." It may even be something very common sense, but it's just not really stated enough in real life day to day to be remembered most of the time. Here's a thread where you can post any pieces of anime wisdom you've come across. It doesn't have to be the exact quote, so long as you're able to convey the full meaning. Also, if it's not something obvious, you can explain it if you want, but you don't have to. I'll start with two from Yu Yu Hakusho:

-by Kurama: "Any prize worth having usually requires risk."

-by Genkai: "It's time you bit the bullet and started caring about something with all your heart and energy! But you can't do that if you're always holding yourself back in case it doesn't work out!"

Well my bit of wisdom is also from Yu Yu Hakusho, but the movie.

Hiei: There is no one that dose not carry scars on his heart. If there were someone in the world like that he would be a shallow soul.

*feels the need to list every single Gintama episode title ever*

Ok, not all of them are wisdom, as much as funny little truths. I'll look for a few that fit the first category.

"Good things never occur in succession, but bad things do"
"Important things are hard to see"
"Freedom doesn't mean lawlessness, but means living one's life according to one's own rules"
"The best make-up for a woman is a smile"
"The difference between strong points and weak points is paper thin"
"Everybody is an escape convict of the imprisonment called 'Myself'"
"Like a haunted house, life is filled with horrors"
"When you are troubled, laugh it off, laugh it off"

I think almost any anime, or actually every kind of entertainment, has a bit of wisdom in them. This is just the first thing that popped into my mind.

>>2 So that's where it's from! I have that quote on a Hiei wallpaper and it's been so long that I'd forgotten where it came from.

>>3 Ooh, very nice quotes.

I've got another one, from Fullmetal Alchemist this time (I'm sure you've all heard this one):

-by Ed: "You've got a good, strong pair of legs, Rose. You should get up and use them."

"Never Knows Best" from FLCL

8 Name: Sejin !PKt//nzxc2 : 2011-10-03 21:12 ID:+3DtcXdW [Del]

>>7 What? I just want to make sure that people know this thread has a more specific purpose than random anime quotes or episode titles. Then again, only having seen FLCL once, that episode title may have more meaning than I realize.

Hmmm...y'know what? I think I'd like to make a little change to this thread. If the meaning of your quote is difficult to figure out, please say what it is. I figure this way we might avoid future confusion about what quotes actually belong in this thread, as opposed to any of the other quote threads.

>>5 Hardly wise.

Context for >>7 is that was what was written on Mamimi's cigarette. It probably has some symbolic meaning, but it's hardly a quote of wisdom.

...I seem to be drawing a blank. I know there are a few really good quotes out there, but I can't remember any specifically. I like this thread though, at least, when people actually post wisdom and not random quotes. We have a thread for random quotes.

"There's no such thing as a painless lesson. They just don't exist. Sacrifices are necessary. You can't gain anything without losing something first. Although, if you can endure that pain, and walk away from it, you'll find that you now have a heart strong enough to overcome any obstacle. Yeah, a heart made full metal."
-by Edward Elric, from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

I really, really love this quote. Not only is it inspirational, but it reminds us (or at least me lol) that even when our lives seem just impossibly hopeless, empty, filled with sadness and despair, or any other terrible thing, if you can get through it, the experience can help you really grow as a person and become stronger inside.

19 Name: Xeniar : 2011-10-16 03:13 ID:X8cfsROK [Del]

I vaguely remember some from this anime... *mutter mutter* *goes back to where the quotes are*

"Believing breaks through fate and creates miracles." - Rika Furude (Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni)

"An unwavering, courageous heart is able to crush any kind of fate." Hanyuu (Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni)

In other words, if you are willing to do something, you have the power to take control of that.

"There is nothing in this world that is truly "perfect". Though it may be a rather large cliché, it is still the truth. It is the ordinary people who look up to "perfection" as an ideal and seek after it. But in truth, what is this idea of "perfection" truly worth? Nothing. Not a single thing. I detest "perfection". To be "perfect" is to be unable to improve any further. There would be no scope for "creation", not a single gap in one's knowledge or one's ability. Do you see now? To true scientists like you and I, "Perfection" is tantamount to "despair". We aspire to reach greater levels of brilliance than ever before, but never, NEVER, to reach perfection. That is the paradox through which we scientists must struggle. Indeed, it is our duty to find pleasure in that struggle. In other words, the second you allowed yourself to spout a ridiculous word like "perfect", in truth, you had already been defeated. That is if you wish to be treated as a scientist." -Mayuri Kurotsuchi

I agree with the Gintama titles - they are all epic
Mines are from some anime/manga and a novel (Korean)

"If a devil can love, then it can only love itself." Josua Von Arnim (Children of the Rune - Demonic/ Talesweaver 2nd Generation)

"Situation is what I make in favour for myself" Bonten (Amatsuki)

"Why dream of flying when you have strong pair of legs that can carry you?" Kiba (Wolf's Rain)

"I have committed no crime." Albert Marverick (Tiger and Bunny), In context with the fact that this guy was the main antagonist of the series, but also the founder of the series and savior of the discriminated NEXT by herofying them, and causing the said crime in order to.

"My dream is to be called "cool" by my daughter."
"That's not a dream, it's a desire."
"No! It is a dream!" Conversation between Kotetsu T. Kaburagi and Barnaby Brooks Jr. (Tiger and Bunny)

"Parents always consider a lot when they are picking presents for their children." Kotetsu T. Kaburagi (Tiger and Bunny)

"I LOVE humans! That's why humans should love me back." Orihara Izaya (Durarara!!) In context with the fact that humans HATE his guts in general. This irony is rhetoric - why does he proclaim he loves human when all he does is to hurt them? is he like the Loki, the mischievious Norse God? Or, does he despise humans in fact? Or is he simply longs to be loved like a sulking child causing trouble to seek attention?

I remember hearing a quote from full metal alchemist that goes something like this : "A dream to get everything back the way it was, once you have it, what will you do with your life. The pleasure of a dream is that it's a fantasy. If it happens it was never a dream" Forgot who said it but it's one of those quotes that just stuck with me :)

I'm dragging this up from the abyss of the Animation board because, well...1) I was gone a while and would otherwise have tried to keep this a bit more alive, as I like the concept, 2) I've got a quote to post, and 3) With all the new anime I've seen mentioned on this board I figure there's a good chance for some new good quotes. So, without any more delay, my newest addition is:

"You think you're special? You're not. Everyone's the same. Everyone lies, everyone hides things; no one makes it through this life being completely honest. I bet you've got a couple of juicy secrets you wouldn't tell your best friend. So explain this: how come it's okay for you to have secrets, but not your parents? You wanna know what my thoughts are on this? I think if you're having an affair, or if your spouse knows, at times you still laugh at the same dumb jokes. You keep eating the same sweet stew. You just keep going. Do you see? Whatever problems they had, they're just a big 'ol stain on the pavement now. Everyone's the same. No exceptions. All of them, equal before God." - by Izaya Orihara from Durarara!!

Some of the specifics in this quote obviously only make sense in the context in which they were said, but I think the larger meaning has immensely broad application.

I really like the idea of this thread. My quotes are from Mobile Suit Gundam.

"I may not be a peaceful man, but I can be useful in bringing about peace." - Zechs Merquise

In essence, do what is right.

"Possibly... we humans can exist without fighting. but many of us have chosen to fight. For what reason? To protect something? Protect what? Ourselves? The future? If we kill people to protect ourselves and this future, then what sort of future is it, and what will we have become? There is no future for those who have died. And what of those who did the killing? Is happiness to be found in a future that is grasped with bloodstained hands? Is that the truth?" - Lacus Clyne

Self-explanatory.

" There are somethings you can't protect without fighting " - Kira Yamato

Self-explanatory.

"If I have the power to make a difference, I should put it to good use..." - Kira Yamato

Self-explanatory.

"Anyone who has ever wept because they felt weak or powerless has always had those kinds of thoughts. Oh, yes. But the moment you acquire all that power you dreamt of, you become the one who causes others to weep tears of loss. Never forget that." - Athrun Zala

Self-Explanatory.

"Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding." - Gundam 00

Self-Explanatory.

"Marina... Ismail... By the time you read this... I'll already be gone. Armed Interventions to put an end to war... I'm unable to do anything but fight for Celestial Being... You taught me what it means to fight. Back then, just like Gundam. I wanted to know.. Why our world is so terminally distorted? Where did this distortion come from? Why are there people who are unconsciously evil? Why do they not realize that their evil hurts others? Why is humanity an existence that only conflicts with itself? Why are there people to rule, and those who are ruled? Why do we wound each other? In spite of all this, why do people go on living like they do? I wanted to ask you. Please think of an answer, if we may meet again. That being the case, I will seek out the same thing on a different path than yours. Down the path towards mutual human understanding for the answer. I'll keep looking for it, together with my Gundam. Together with... My Gundam..." - Setsuna F. Seiei

I believe this one to be self explanatory.

"Certain conditions must be met for total peace. First, all weapons must be eliminated. And second... the desire to fight must be erased from people's minds!" - Zechs Merquise

If fighting is Human nature, then fighting must be erased from our nature if Humanity is ever to obtain peace.

"History is just like an endless waltz: the first three beats of War, Peace and Revolution continue on forever." - Mariemaia Barton

Sadly, this quote is undoubtedly true. Humans wage war, and at the conclusion of war, comes a brief peace, but then it is followed by revolution and war yet again. An Endless Waltz. A Waltz that must be ended.

If I find any other quotes from some of my other favorite anime, i'll be sure to make another post.

I'm performing CPR on this thread because I've got a couple new quotes.

"When a person lies, what is important is not the lie itself. No, it is their reason, their "why"."
-by Holo, from Spice and Wolf

"I feel sorry about your confusion, but this world's never really been about truth or lies. In this world, there's only one thing that's worth knowing: hard facts. Despite this universal truth, people misguidedly choose to only accept the facts that appeal to their way of thinking. They're so limited. They can only accept the truths that are comfortable for them. So, this is simply about wanting to hang on to your personal power. Realizing things may not have been as we accepted them to be unsettles us. It's overwhelming. Are you absolutely sure that you know the truth?"
-by Sosuke Aizen, from Bleach

>>42 Funny thing: When you posted that, I had no idea what it meant. Now that I've seen Kara no Kyoukai, and have the context, I agree it is a very worthy quote.

>>70 Okay, but if that's the case, it doesn't belong in this thread. As the title of this thread, and especially the description in my original post starting the thread clearly state, this is not a thread where you just quote anime. There are many of those on here, one of which is aptly titled "Anime Quotes". If you want to quote any old thing that you think is funny, or cool, or whatever from anime, go to that thread. This thread is for posting WISE quotes from anime, and, if it's not obvious from the quote itself, the person posting can expound on why the quote is wise.

Just because something is true doesn't mean it's wise.

i think most quotes from makishima fit so i will just post my favorite two:
Most people don’t mind killing cows and chickens but they’d probably have a hard time doing the same to chimpanzees. Partially, it’s because chimpanzees bear a slight resemblance to humans, but the primary reason is that they can draw pictures. Suppose fish were able to draw pictures. Even if we are unable to understand what they’re thinking, it becomes harder to kill animals that can draw. Instinctively, in our minds we would say to ourselves… “May be they have feelings” That shows how high a value we assign to expression.

and the 2. and my personal favorite:
Everyone is alone. Everyone is empty. People no longer have need of others. You can always find a spare for any replacement. Any relationship can be replaced.

Gintama quotes
Gintoki: If u have time to think of a beautiful ending why not live beautifully till the end

Yoshida Shouyou: All a victor receives is a sense of self-satisfaction and conceit. As the loser, you won something far more meaningful.

Gintoki: The best way to live a full life is to be a child, no matter what your age.

"You cant google stuff in 1942 you asshat!" - England, Hetalia...

jk just didnt want to be 100% serious, not my style. serious quote now c:

"Those who call themselves ‘ugly’ don’t realize that someone out there thinks they’re the most beautiful person in their eyes."- France, Hetalia

amazing how different two quotes from the same show can be so different (first quote is more inspiring tbh lel)
