Shu is a typical Japanese boy, but has an unbeatable, optimistic and determined attitude. However, when he sees a mysterious girl with strange eyes named Lala-Ru up on a smokestack, he is soon pulled into a strange desert world. Shu soon discovers the true terrors of war, which includes genocide, brutal torture, hunger, thirst, and child exploitation. Now Shu is trying to save Lala-Ru, as well as his hard earned, and often relunctant, new friends from the insane dictator, Hamdo. Whether Shu can possibly accomplish saving those he cares about while still holding up to his values remains to be seen.

This show's description alone, made me feel, if ya know what I mean. It's like the concept, the story, the characters, everything... Everything was so well done. This series definitely goes down as one of my favorites. Now and Then, Here and There, is an exploration of the darkest of human crime and global tragedy. Why would you want to watch this sadness in the first place, you ask? It is one of the most beautifully shot, masterfully written, and perfectly paced anime out there. Shu's purity gives this horrible scenario hope and turns each dark new horror into something inspiring in how admirable he handles it. He's stupid and he makes mistakes, but his ideals in how much he accomplishes despite being helpless in an evil regime on a dieing planet is astonishing, making him one of my favorite characters of all time. This show is truly amazing, check it out, lemme know what you think.

This anime made me feel so tense when I watched it. Seems like it should have been a movie instead of a show. I don't know about others but I thought this anime had a lot of emotion, Or at least it made me feel a lot of emotions. I definitely agree with your description.

so yeah, from what i hear a lot of the non fantasy scenarios in this show were taken from real live war torn countries. lots of people put things like this in the back of their mind and like to go along pretending it only happens in stories, but some places are very cruel and the least we fat cats with computers can do is keep them in mind.

Great anime i watched some of it on netflix on my 360 and i didnt get to finish it sadly. Pretty oldschool art which I really enjoy, reminds me alot of the movie Akira. Watch it!
