So i figured instead of making a bunch more threads about my favorite shows, I'd make a single thread that includes all of them.

So, SHAFT is a production company, but not just any production company, SHAFT is the company that isn't afraid to implement new ideas, or to take a step away from normality. They tend to focus a lot on intelligent dialogue, whether it be a serious moment or a hilarious moment. Also the animation in SHAFT shows is very sporadic, which i personally find to be amazing. But not unlike anything, SHAFT does have it's flops... and quite a few of them actually... They either successfully grab you by the balls and challenge your intelligence, or they sit you down and put on a very entertaining~ powerpoint presentation about useless information.
I'm going to list SHAFT's masterpieces. (IMO)
And I'm also going to list their most prominent flops so you know what to avoid.

Masterpieces

Alright In my opinion these shows are where SHAFT shined, every one of them was so well done... I also put links to the threads on this site (if there was one) just so you can see what other people here think.

Alright, so here is a list of the notable flops... I'm not going to provide any links here because i don't particularly like any of these lol...

  • Dance in the Vampire Bund

  • G-On Riders

  • Popotan

  • This Ugly yet Beautiful World

  • Maria†Holic

Some people might disagree with me on that last one... I personally thought that it was trash. It started out giving me high hopes too... However even so, if you found it interesting, in comparison to SHAFT's masterpieces it doesn't stand out much anyway..

Alright so that is pretty much it... Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko is SHAFT's most recently completed project, and it was pretty amazing... And they are currently working on the prequel and sequel of Bakemonogatari, the prequel being Kizumonogatari (which i belive is going to be a movie) and the sequel, Nisemonogatari, which has had no info released on it as far as I know. Hopefully this was helpful and informative, let me know what ya think!

I've seen about three of the "Masterpieces." I guess I will have to watch the rest. :)

>>2 Lol those quotation marks made me read that as an extremely sarcastic response...
Which ones have you not seen?

>>1 Also, There are 2 other shows that are supposed to be really good but i have yet to watch... and they are..

I'm finally responding to your thread, Mael! YAY! Aren't you proud of me? ^_^

I have been able to avoid the flops completely, really, I hardly recognise any of those titles. So I guess I can consider myself lucky since in my mind SHAFT pretty much equals amazing now. While the plots are definitely well written, well developed and to my taste, what I really like about SHAFT is their animation style. I know some people hate it but it really appeals to me and makes my eyeballs orgasm.

Arakawa Under the Bridge is next up on my to watch list and my expectations are now ridiculously high. It better be awesome or I might cry.

>>3 I wasn't trying to be sarcastic. :) I haven't seen Bakemonogatari, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, or ef-A Tale of Memories.

Oh man, I loved everything about Bakemonogatari! It's unlike any anime I have ever seen. The storyline, animation, production, every aspect of the show made me enjoy it very much. The one thing I could have done without was the stupid live action OP. I really enjoy SHAFT and I'm pretty excited to see what else this studio has to offer. Thanks for the recs!

I just started watching Arakawa, and so far I have to say no tears have been shed because, as it turns out, it's a pretty brilliant show. Yay.

>>7 After me commending it as one of shafts masterpieces I would have been upset had you actually shed tears lol...

Alright so, I just finished Natsu no Arashi! And it was pretty great... i gotta say. The art hindered me at first, and the first episode confused me, but SHAFT pulled through on this one. I wouldn't consider it a 'masterpiece', however it certainly was not a flop by any means. I enjoyed the story and the characters far more than I had anticipated. Overall, I give it a thumbs up. Check it out if your up to it!

I actually enjoyed watching Dance in the Vampire Bound, but that was probally becuase I just finished watching Shiki and I was hungering for another anime with "evil" vampires. But still i wouldn't call it a flop, but it's definly not in the league Madoka or Bakamonogatari (haven't seen the rest of the animes on the list).

But anyway thanks for the list, finaly got some new stuff to watch =)

>>10 Ironically i watched Dance in the Vampire Bund, and then Shiki. So it didn't compare well in my head. Also, it was just so...plain. Idk it didn't stand out at all like the others, that is just my opinion though.

And np! Lemme know what you think of the others.

>>3 Alright, so i just finished Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru. And, like natsu no arashi, it took me a bit to get used to the character designs. However by that point, any desire i had to stop watching this show had been torn to pieces. Maids have become a kind of staple in anime. There is almost a kind of perverse obsession with it at this point; anyone wearing something frilly and looks as though they are a cross between slut and fraulein based on their apparel garners a lot of love and attention. Sometimes you get entire anime based on maids. These work with the objectification, exploitation and subordination of the maids in question, and of course, there is revelry in the position of being the "master" or the "goshujin-sama" over the girl/girls. But interestingly enough, despite all the promise of being one of those anime, Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru actually averts the expectation. This is not a maid anime. But there are maids, in some respects of the word. But this show breaks a lot of unspoken promises anyhow... >_> Its safe to say I enjoyed watching it.

Also on a side note I can't believe i didn't know that there was a season 2 to Arakawa Under the Bridge. I'm an idiot. Time to watch that.

BTW that last post was me.. i just fucked it up.

>BMG
Text text no money for animation

>Arakawa
Repetitive jokes.

>SZS
Not funny after S1.

I'm kidding, I love SHAFT.
But I'm sort of pissed that no one mentioned PPD.

15 Name: Mael !hefBVEyOUs : 2011-08-08 09:18 ID:Ny17cmru [Del]

I've heard some great things about PPD... I haven't watched it yet But I will soon lol...

>BMG
Watch the blu-ray, seriously. Don't even question it.

>Arakawa
Its a good thing that even the repetitive Jokes are funny as hell.

>SZS
It got awkward in the second season. But i grew attached to it again. S1 is the best though.

The blue ray crashed my old computer twice and made it so hot that I thought the mother board was gonna melt.

Oh right...PPD. Here is the show Enni and I were talking about.

-Pani Poni Dash!-
I've heard a lot of great things about it, and its supposed to be one of SHAFTS better works, I'll post again after I have completed it. If you've seen it, lemme know what you think.

Bump, because the new thread is considered null...

I was going to post this on the last thread to help it get back on track but…

I’ve looked into 3/7 of the ‘masterpieces’, but I’ve never actually finished any of them :I
I’ve tried to get interested in Bakemonogatari on three separate occasions because I’ve heard so much praise from it. So far I’m up to somewhere in episode three. (&As a result I haven’t bothered to look into the sequel)
I watched about half of Arakawa Under the Bridge, but for whatever reason never got around to finishing it.
I’ve been meaning to finish Madoka Magica for a long time now, but since I never get up to episode 3 before I get distracted by something else, I don’t get hooked and it always gets pushed down my list of stuff to do.
Kind of wanted to see Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, but again, I’ve just never got around to it.
Never heard of ef-A Tale of Memories or Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko.

HA. And you thought *insertnamehere* should be ashamed. :V

21 Name: Mael !DoMiNUIT9I : 2012-02-24 01:06 ID:aPqKq725 [Del]

>>20 OTL
Wait... on Madoka, have you even watched 3? Fuck...
For Bakemonogatari, you really should watch all of it, its really incredible, but I said earlier in this thread, watch the blu-ray version, the other version has so many text panels, and the blu-ray significantly reduced that number...
You haven't fully seen what SHAFT does so you don't need to be ashamed, Insert however has completed 4 out of 7 and hasn't watched all 7....

>>21 Nope. I keep getting up to episode 3, but I never actually watch it. OTL Then when I decide I want to try watch it again I re-watch ep 1+2 and each time SOMETHING has come up before I start watching ep 3. EVERY TIME. >:I /flips table
I don't know what happens in ep 3, but friends have told me that it's when the anime basically transforms into mind fuck.

I will get around to watching Bakemonogatari. Someday. Maybe. OTL
I already have enough trouble keeping up with currently airing anime, and I'm not even watching that many this season :I ;; So watching completed series usually takes me a long time unless I marathon it over a weekend.

Also, is it just me, or does SHAFT have a strange fascination with eyes? o 3o

23 Name: Mael !DoMiNUIT9I : 2012-02-24 01:58 ID:aPqKq725 [Del]

Man, you're in for one hell of a fun time when you watch 3...

But yeah i know what you mean, I got behind on last seasons anime, and now I have random cram sessions...

And yes, its the eyes, and the head-tilts~
