Saw the Higurashi thread and then realised there's no Umineko thread :/

Umineko no Naku Koro ni is considered the third installment in 07th Expansions "When They Cry" series. Originally being a visual novel (although some prefer to call the When They Cry series audio novels), it was made into a 26 episode anime.

The story takes place during 1986, primarily between October 4 and 5, on the island of Rokkenjima, owned by the wealthy Kinzo, head of the Ushiromiya.
It is custom each year for each member of the family to attend a family conference to discuss matters, primarily the financial situation of each member.
For the first time in six years, the main character Battler Ushiromiya, son of Kinzo's second son, is attending.

Because of Kinzo's poor health, the main topic of this year's conference is how to split the inheritance.
Unknown to the rest of the family however, is Kinzo's complete lack of interest in this matter. After being told he does not have long to live, he is desperate to see the Golden Witch Beatrice once more. Having immersed himself in the occult, he begins a ceremony to revive the witch. Soon after, a violent typhoon traps all on the island and a string of mysterious murders commence, sending the inhabitants of the island into a deadly struggles between fantasy and reality.

This show is actually pretty interesting, with a lot of attempts by characters (well, mainly one) at solving the murders.
If you like magic, mysterious murders, battles of logic and blood, you will probably like this anime. A lot.

A warning to the faint of heart though: the anime does contain some gore and blood in some episodes. Don't let that turn you away though :D The anime doesn't focus entirely on that.

Also, while this is the third installment to the When They Cry series, it features no prior characters. It may as well be set in a completely different universe.
Those that have watched Higurashi though will enjoy the subtle references.

Omg i just loved this anime! Things like this interest me a lot and i love listening to how Battler tries to figure out how the murders were played out without magic. Higurashi was really good too but i think i liked this one a little better. I always found myself trying to solve the murders myself before then anime tells you ^-^;;

It's too bad they censored most of the gore in the anime :(

Is there an uncensored version? I never bothered to check. Might be out of the board topic, but I follow the manga series as well as played the visual novel of it.

I never heard of an uncensored version of the anime, so I don't think it exists.

I've played some of the vn (read: I haven't even finished the first episode). I lol'd when I saw the 'gore' in it though.
