A pretty damn great show. I actually watched the movies recently. They're really good as well. I like the ending a little better.
It's the same,, outcome, but there's just some extra scenes and it's a little more badass. Simon's fist fight with the anti-spiral.

I guess he wasn't, but he was certainly out of place with the other characters. He was realistic, but kind of a prick about it.
And plus, realism, when you could just DRILL THROUGH THE HEAVENS?
It was clearly a foil and meant to be disliked, so I don't have any objections to disliking his character, somewhat redeemed as it was after the fact.

If the art style is what's keeping you away from watching something, there's really nothing I can say to that.
...That said it confuses me. I thought the art style in Gurren Lagann was amazing. It's nice to break the mold once in a while, I really do get tired of the generic anime look. The fighting scenes were artistically messy - it's done like that entirely on purpose. I know a lazily-done action scene when I see one, but when they go out of their way to be peculiar it's impossible for me to call it bad. Just different.
But again, if a minor detail like robots talking or some other silliness really bothers you that much, this topic is beyond the point of discussion.

Speaking from the perspective of some one who isn't a raging fan of this show, its actually an okay series. It got its big hype from being a show that was just really enthusiastic and "hot blooded" during a time when most anime was settling into a calmer routine.
In terms of story, while being nothing to sneeze at as "just another giant robot series", it really is nothing that special.
the first thing that comes to mind for description from this series is "Megas XLR meets Neon Genesis Evangelion", and the art style is messy - this is, as mentioned above, done on purpose to emphasize the hot bloodedness of it all. If art-styles bother you though, then I really can't say anything - I have yet to fully watch baccano because everyone's clothing irritates me.
But, kind of like the touhou games, while the content itself is hit-or-miss, the real joy from getting into it is the fandom around it.

TTGL ranks as one of my favorite anime. Sure the art/animation may be rough and the plot is nothing too original (although nowadays there is hardly ever anything original anymore) but I can't help but enjoy it.

You got the quote wrong though... The ultimatum is to believe in yourself that believes in yourself. The whole point was to completely take dependance on Kamina out of the equation which, in hindsight, makes the timing of the quote that much more powerful.

So, I watched Gurren Lagann.
Unfortunately I got spoiled as to what was going to happen in episode 8, but honestly knowing didn't really make it that much easier. And there goes perhaps the most epic addition to my list of great dead characters.
But things just kept getting better and better from then on. I don't remember the last time I had so much fun watching a show. It was amazing. For the last few episodes it was so unbelievably unbelievable and just...aahhhh people explaining it doesn't cut it. You have to see that stuff to get it, because there really isn't anything that can properly compare.
It's not a perfect series, but I think the whole feeling it lets off is what makes it great. That and the fact that every single character is an awesome human being (yes, that definitely includes Rossiu too, fight me). It totally deserves its reputation.

Finally,Simon peirced through and outside Space,Time,and Dimensions basically breaking the laws of reality.He never 'create the heavvens' with his drill though.
He defintely never 'Peirced the heavens' if his single status at the end tells us anything! lol Seriously..he never slept with anyone? Yoko,Nia, or even youngest black sister,Kital? seems the only one tht screwd him at the end isthe universe itself.
