Secondary characters were more fun than the main characters. All of them.
Although I did sorta liked that whole "You all might be nice people, but we will violently murder you if you stand on our way" side of hero and heroine. Proper sociopaths are rare.

One of the selling points of this series for me was that they really didn't try and play up the "good and bad" angle. Everyone had their own morals, and if they clashed - they clashed. Nothing ethically right or wrong behind it.

i did hear about it getting licensed, but they aren't dubbing it as far as i know. i really hate it when stuff gets half-assed like that.

I've been trying to imagine Freeman voice Shichika for a while now and just cant't do it. I'm not against the idea at all, just can't see it. But I do agree with King about freeman doing a good Emonzaemon.

Finally got around to watching the series. It was very episodic, following an
Adventure Town schematic typical of other shonen anime...
but it did it so well!
And the fact each episode was twice the normal length of normal anime episodes gave them enough time to have an entire arc enclosed in one episode. No inappropriate cuts, just the right amount of content.
What set it apart from normal action anime was the dialogue. I was used to it from Bakemonogatari (same author, not a coincidence I suppose), but this genre usually calls for a larger action:talking ratio. Depending on the budget. In run-of-the-mill shonen anime, the talking is just a lot of power level banter and drawn out exasperated reactions to them; in this anime, all of the talking was well-thought out and enjoyable to listen (read subtitles) to.
I could continue on with my ultimately very positive review; however, by that point you'll have been torn to pieces.

Right, so I'll type a proper opinion now that I'm no longer like, making faces only properly expressed through emotes at this series.
So, Katanagatari.
The art is beautiful, and I can't stop staring everytime I open up my folder for this series. When you look at the scans for each episode, sure it looks a bit busy, but it comes together quite nicely. Same thing for the episodes itself.
Story... I just recommend watching it for the story, I'm honestly not too sure how to explain it myself. I just know that it kept me interested, and I'm a bit notorious for dropping series within the first few episodes or chapters.
Characters! I loved the main characters, Yasuri Shichika and Togame. The way their relationship, as well as their character changed throughout the series was nice to see. Also, all the secondary characters were awesome, and quite a few of them had a decent backstory. You know, especially in Episode 4. Best episode ever.

The pacing of the show was genius, when you realize -
"A single episode of the series was aired each month.", in it's original run in 2010.
The art took some getting used to, but it was very distinct between characters, you could always tell who was who..

Though this thread lacks a description, in essence Katanagatari is a story about collecting swords. The main characters Shichika and Togame are set out to collect the 12 legendary swords, each rumored with enough power to conquer a nation. Shichika, though a swordsman, uses no swords, but is 'a sword himself', promised to aid in Togame's journey through his love for her.
Though my description writing skills are about as complex as middle school creative writing, please, watch this anime if you haven't already. Nisio Isin is the writer for this, which some of you may know as the same writer of the Monogarati series (Bake, Nise, ext.).
While it's a shounen, I'll give fair warning that there's a lot of dialogue here. The show is dialogue heavy with good, well-thought out characters and fights, and shows how else a shounen can be done besides the boring 'power up at the last second' bullshit shounens usually tend to pull.
Give it a shot.
