It's difficult for me to only pick out 5 series, so here are the first 5 I thought of in no particular order:

Fate/stay night - neat concept with pro characters.

Monster - compelling story from beginning to end.

Ghost in the Shell: SAC - a futuristic yet believable cyberpunk setting, interesting concepts/ideas/technologies.

Juuni Kokki - epic fantasy story with excellent characterization.

BECK - surprisingly good. Follow the main character as he goes from being a newb to a pro.

Hum, I haven't had a chance to update, but from what I remember it's:

1. Kara no Kyoukai: It's all round one of the best series I've ever seen. Fantastic storyline, wonderful art, and Nasuverse in general captures my fancy.

2. Bakemonogatari: Senjougahara, she's the prototype TsunYan people have been waiting for.

3. Toradora: The story touched me, I really felt for Taiga and Ami - Taiga finally finding someone to rely on, and Ami who was left alone after finally finding something she could honestly cherish.

4. Air: This was just sad, one of my first KEY novel encounters.

5. Elfen Lied: I believe this is a work of art, it has quite a few strong statements about humanity.

And while you said only five, honorable mention for "Serial Experiments Lain", which will occasionally replace #2-5 on that list. It had a brilliantly thought out plot, complex symbolism and left you thinking.

I love how only two people said Durarara. If it's not in your top 5, then why are you here?

mine are Baka test, Angel beats my first key encounter, DRRR, Heroman, and an upcoming anime High school of the dead.

1. tsubasa reservior chronicles.
i just love the story. it's seems boring at first but the climax is just amazing. it's definitely something out of the ordinary.

we all know why we like this one :]
3. 5 centimeters per second. the graphic is awesome! and the story is so sad
4. the place promised in our early days
it's by the same person as #3 and the story is sort of the same... but it has a happy ending ^_^

1. Deathnote – Overrated, but still one of my favorite, and would be my favorite because of the cat and mouse games.
2. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya – Enjoyable science-fiction story with a very unreliable but cynical narrator.
3. Bakemonogatari – Witty dialogue and clever twists to each mystery.
4. Baccano – It’s just so awesome when the pieces fit together and form a coherent story.
5. Durarara – Still my current addiction, and from the same creator as Baccano. Add a second season and this series might jump to number 1.

1. Mnemosyne - Epic.
2. InuYasha - My first, and I'm glad. Rumiko Takahashi is a genius.
3. Durarara!! - Izaya-kun makes it all worth while.
4. Ergo Proxy - Also epic, I love the story.
5. Clannad & Clannad ~After Story~ - Emotional, heart-warming, depressing, and makes you realize many things you took for granted.

Yes, they are truly awesome anime. But I just have to mention FLCL. It's like taking insanity and putting it into a 6 episode anime. Fantasmical.

In no particular order.

Toradora! // one of the cutest and most touching love series. Taiga and Ryuuji are so cute together. Plus, I cried at the end.

Samurai Champloo // some of the best action and a great soundtrack. I really liked the storyline.

Honey & Clover // some of the best character development I've seen in a series. Could be really funny, at times.

Death Note // had a really interesting concept, even though the story pretty much bombed after L died.

Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad // since I'm a music geek, I was inspired. I really liked how realistic Koyuki's path was as he became a rockstar.

And Durarara!! is definitely #6.

Ouran High School Host Club: One of my first, and I don't think I've ever laughed more since.

Fullmetal Alchemist (1st anime): Sinply amazing. Perfect balance of story, action, adventure, humor, and emotion. Brotherhood is good too, but I haven't gotten around to finishing it.

Paprika: Anime + insanity + FUN + thought provoking = epic. :D

DRRR!!: Despite my little rant up there, this anime has landed a place in my top 5. :3 For pure awesomeness.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time: Also my favorite movie. Amazing characters, story, climax, etc. It's just good all around! Time waits for no one...

+A whole ton more that just won't fit on this list. >.>

I find it hard to rank my beloved anime shows for top 5 or 10 because some of them are in the same rank~ XD but here you go~

1. Durarara - I like Kida, but I LOVE ORIHARA IZAYA. ^-^ ♥ And the twist of the story is really wonderful. ;)

2. Kuroshitsuji - Sebby is so awesome!♥

3. Ouran Host Club - Honey is cute, the anime itself is hilarious! and Tamaki has the best personality ever!★

4. Vampire Knight - I love Kaname♥ and the story is great.

5. NANA - Nana is so awesome and everything about the story is fun and amazing~★

I'm afraid I have seen way too much anime to list only five i really like, but here goes in no particular order:

Ghost in the Shell - Anyone dare say otherwise has a problem
Code Geass (Season 1 & 2) - Love the whole story, especially its ending
FLCL - Total brainfuck first time you watch it
Full Metal Alchemist (1st anime) - Love the story, but manga is better
Black Lagoon - Its just kickass

1. Durarara - I love the idea that people in the same place have different ways of viewing things. And Erika and Walker are awesome.
2. Baccano - confusing at first, but at the end, it makes you want to jump up and yell "Now I get it!"
3. D. Gray-man - mostly the manga, but also because I love the horror/weirdness that goes on
3. Fullmetal Alchemist (Brotherhood)- love the storyline and basic awesomeness
4. Death Note - again, overstated, but I love anime that has this kind of cat-and-mouse mind game. And the main character is fun to hate and love at the same time
5. I don't know. Probably Detective Conan, it was my first anime other than *coughpokemoncough*

Eyehisled 21: great series for football fans. the main character was a gopher for his elemantary and junior high school thus creating an amazing speed by senior year.

Beck: as Reltair said "Follow the main character as he goes from being a newb to a pro."

Air Gear: from a middle school gang leader to a storm rider to a king.

Baccano!: so many going on at once. so many different perspective of the story. just gotta love it.

Franken Fran: a professor that will do anything in the idea of love. amazing gory series.

this is a hard question... im sure once i compile a list i will have thought of something i forgot, but here we go... my top five as of right this moment in no particular oder:

neon genesis evangelion: im sure everyone knows about this (in)famous series. its very love it or hate it, but im a fan. it also heavily influenced one of my favorite kids shows digimon tamers

baccano and durarara: two great shows that im lumping together for convenience. durarara is just as insane as it is heartwarming and izaya is a very hate-able villian which you dont see too much of anymore, and baccano is durarara on crack set in 1930s new york. awesome.

outlaw star: its an oldie, but a goodie. may not be the best space western, but its my favorite. so much character... now i want to go watch it again.

gurren lagann: this is like flcl meets eva. and it is awesome. i cried from the happiness, sadness, and awesomeness

noien: i've only seen this recently but its SOOOO good. once it gets going you will be hooked, and by the end you'll take a good long look at yourself. really needs to get more love.

off-topic but I thought I'd ask here- since everyone here seems to love both Durarara and Baccano, does anybody have any recommendations for similarly excellent anime? Unconventional narration (not necessarily chronological or linear) tied with a good story, fantastic characters, and a slightly wtf!? plot? I feel very empty now that I've finished rewatching both. :x

1- Air Gear!! I agree with Firo
2- Durarara!! It wasnt like anything I'd seen before... it was beyond good and it made me look at things alot differently then I used to.
3- One Piece- it has the best balance of funny and fighting, but somehow it doesnt get old!! 2 thumbs up
4- Tokyo Majin- This show hurt too watc for me, I chose it as my fav because it was nothing but the will too protect your friends.. my soul was strengthened by that show lol
5- Last would have to be a tie between that new series Fairy Tail and the old classics Fullmetal, Wolfs Rain, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in a Shell, Bleach and Inuyasha..... that was way more than two hahahha^^

Damn, I always have a hard time with these kinds of top 5 lists. The order usually changes, and I really do like a lot of stuff, but right now it's probably (in no particular order):

In no particular order of liking
1.DRRR - Too confusingly awesome to put into words...hence this entire site
2.FMA - because it's an awesome dub and something no anime fan should be without
3.Gundam Seed [Destiny] because it's like 100 episodes of the same characters fighting for the same reasons in huge machines
4.Code Geass because it's too much like Deathnote and Gundam Seed put together {plus CLAMP is awesome}
5.K-ON!! Because no body should be without a cute anime favorite (and BONUS: music is awesome as well)!!

Well, first of all, I have to say that I read manga more than watch anime, so when you look at my list you may think "Wow theres plenty better anime than that" or "That anime was boring", but I don't know that much anime... so... I don't know what else to list...
So yeah.

1. Durarara - I love anime with plots like the ones Durarara had in it. Plus, the characters are really cool, and I can relate to a lot of them
2. Fullmetal Alchemist - I'm including both versions here. I think the plot is really cool and there many unexpected things in it and it makes the anime really interesting.
3. Soul Eater - I'm not too sure with this one, I just like the humor and the characters in it. I always think its fun picking favourites and see how they end up.
4. D.N.Angel - I'm not too sure about this one... it was one of the first anime I've watched, and I just stuck to it for some reason.
5. Lucky Star - Its entertaining. The second anime I've ever watched, my first being Angel Tail (thats the name, right?) because of some person making a thread of it somewhere 4 years ago.

Katekyo Hitman Reborn & Pandora Hearts are my all time favorites!
the characters are all so lovable and the plots are incredible creative.

Gintama - it's total humour and stupidness all the way, which made me literally go "what just happened" and fall out of my seat, but there are moments when I just sob and cry because of all the angst that happens as well.
Oh, and because of the Neo Armstrong Cyclone Jet Armstrong Cannon. And mayo prince.

Darker Than Black - There's just something about this anime that draws me in . . . something about the story, the whole concept and plot that draws me to continue watching.

Trinity Blood - I love the vampires and the whole dark gothic vibe from the anime.

Gundam Wing - My first ever anime, which I need to rewatch again to fully understand it . . . since I watched GW when I was a young child that didn't understand the plot. The mecha battles were just cool.

>>61 SRW:OG The Inspector is currently airing, and it's an anime based on the game Super Robot Taisen: Original Generations 2 for the GBA. Which is a mecha strategy rpg that is full of awesome.

The anime is incredible but is probably confusing for anyone who hasn't played the game.

Great storyline, and it's nice to see comic relief here and there, since it's a drama anime. I've only watched the first season, though, so I'm missing out on quite a bit.

2. Samurai Champloo

Love the characters, and the fights are awesome. I absolutely adore Mugen's fighting style.

3. Durarara!!

Mainly because of any scene with Izaya in it, but I love the character development and the epic climaxes. Also, Celty.

4. Kuragehime

Love how realistic it is. It might not be seen as that compared to real life, but it sure is compared to shoujo anime. Tsukimi is absolutely adorable with jellyfish, too.

5. Princess Tutu

What seemed to be a typical shoujo anime in the very beginning, became an awesome drama in the end. Gotta love plot twists. The ending wasn't too great, though.

- The story line was great, and every character is interesting. FMA deals with religion, racism and what it takes to be a real soldier. The first anime has been a part of my childhood, as well~

DRRR!!
- At first I was confused, but everything fell into place. It's interesting.

Honey & Clover (I and II)
- I love these slice of life stories, and I first watched this when I was about thirteen (I was in second year high school then) and honestly, I didn't quite get it. But when I turned 15, I watched it again, and there it was. I finally felt the bitter-sweet moments.

Bakuman.
- I like it. I just do. I've been drawn to the two's determination.

- This is my guilty pleasure~

2. Kuroshitsuji - I love the style of Kuroshitsuji and the plot. I also love how developed the characters are.
3. Nabari no Ou - I love the storyline.
4. Elfen Lied - It was one of my first anime. I love the action and drama.
5. Gintama - Gintama always makes me laugh! (>w<)/ I've watched it since I was little.

1. Nana: best drama I have seen. I felt moved when the characters were in distress, and I felt a hole in myself at the times when their lives really went to shit.

2. Yuyu Hakusho: one of the first anime I ever saw, so nostalgia goggles are probably kicking in; even so, the four protagonists might seem like standard shonen fare now, they were among the first characters like this, and it really shows in their genuineness and uniqueness. Creative setting and powers make this show worth anyone's time, despite its long length.

3. Clannad ~After Story~: The original Clannad had its moments, but After Story really takes the cake in reagrds to character development and emotional power; the first half, which did not focus on the main couple, but side characters, was rather cheesy for me and kind of superfluous in my opinion, but the second half was damn awesome, and if the whole show had been that good After Story might well be higher on my list.

4. Baccano! : Crazy plot with a huge set of unique and equally crazy characters, who were all loveable to some extent, although some more than others. Its amazing how this show could make me love the most minor characters by showing the style in their clothes and voice in a few short scenes. Confusing ata times, but it came together nicely in the end.

5. Fruits Basket: Again, a multitude of lovely characters. Their interactions were so cute and their love for each other so sincere that I cannot be helped but be moved whenever I watch this show. It gives me hope that people can change the lives of others.

1. Detective Conan- I love mysteries, secret identities, and something about this show is just amazing to me.
2. Haruhi Suzumiya- Kyon and everything that happens to him, I can't put into words what makes me like this so much.
3. Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni- Like I said earlier, I love mysteries, and something about the friendship message in this show is uplifting.
4. CardCaptor Sakura- I find the story to be really engaging and uplifting. I was already an adult male when I first really watched this and I found myself fist pumping at the end of the second movie.
5. Baccano!- Character driven story-telling at it's best. I loved every minute and every person. The more I rewatch it, the more I like it.

Woah..! It's so hard to decide the Top 5 since there are so many great stories. o_o' KHR! and DRRR!! are truly awesome ones but Clannad and Clannad ~After Story~, Toradora!, Soul Eater, D.N.Angel, FMA's 1st anime and Lucky Star were also great~♥

i love this series so much because its so well done. meaningful, funny, heartwarming, action, and smart. i learned a lot from this anime.

death note was my first and i was in love with it. Its in my opinion the best and most interesting mind game ever! its flawless! Code Geass is one of the only anime that actually made me cry it had so much depth and it was so clever i loved it! i can't pick between the two theyre both so well done...especially the endings! All hail Lelouch!! Go Kira and L!!

bleach was great. its getting kinda complicated now but its still got that nice touch that I've always loved. i love how it has such a wide variety of characters and you just love them all!

• GTO/Great Teacher Onizuka- Favorite anime of all time, based on overall enjoyment. The characters were fantastic, Onizuka was a badass, and it was funny as hell. This anime made me seriously consider becoming a teacher.


• Hajime No Ippo- Never before have 'fighting' and 'character development' gone so well together, this is hands down, the best martial arts anime I've ever seen. It actually inspired me to pick up boxing several years back.


• Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan- The epitome of manly spirit, Gurren Lagaan changed my outlook on life, it actually made me less self conscious, and changed my demeanor from apathetic to outgoing.


• Seitokai Yakuindomo- Best pure comedy I've ever seen, I'd recommend it to anyone, unless you have heart/breathing issues. Because you can die from laughing too hard. Ahhh, also I wish I knew a girl with Shino's personality.


• Golden Boy- Oh my god this show... Seriously the funniest anime I've ever seen, yes even funnier than Yakuindomo. The main character is so much of a boss that it makes a tear come to your eye. Seriously, at certain parts, I laughed so hard I cried. I almost died when he demonstrated how he could swim...

A lot of anime I watch are usually action and sci-fi or supernatural. (Yeah that includes a little bit of Mecha in there too.)

Top 5... Well, I'm not exactly 100% sure about my top 5 but I'm definitely crazy about my top 2! The other 3 will be whatever comes to mind. XD

1. Darker Than Black - Season 1 to be more specific. I've never seen Season 2 but I'm not sure if I want to since I heard a combination of WTF and disappointing things about it. But, anyway, almost every character in season 1 is awesome! Mao, Hei, Yin, and Huang--much love to them. Kirihara, Saito, Kono, and Outska may be the more "normal" people but they are fascinating too. My most favorites would have to be Hei, Mao, Amber, Maki, Kono (because young detective in red leather jacket may as well be eye candy for me) and November 11th (who's like the James Bond of all the Contractors). Of all the dark and complex anime I've seen, this is one of the few that takes the cake for me. The whole cake. XD The soundtrack is pretty sweet too!

2. Blassreiter - Just as I've been obsessed with DTB Season 1 for months, I have been into this one just as much. Oh. My. God. Not only are the nanomachine monsters (known as Amalgams, or Demoniacs) and villains terrifying and badass, the heroes are so incredibly courageous and on the same level of badass. Not only is the gorgeous blend of CG and traditional animation as well as the action is good IMO, but the more dramatic stuff too! It's heart-wrenching! And the OST, what I've heard of it, is damn awesome. The composer of at least some of the Metal Gear Solid games, Hibino Norihiko, does the instrumentals. I love the song "Sweet Lies" as well.

3. Wolf's Rain - Pretty much anyone who has a respectful love for wolves will like this one a lot. The pack is soooo love. Tsume and Toboe are my absolute favorites, hands down. Cheza, Blue, and Hige are also love but those two-*_* The whole story about their journey in search of Paradise is so good too. I'd love to complete this anime, even though I've heard plenty about the sad things to come in the second half. And yeah I probably will cry at them. I love the songs "Stray" and "Gravity". Stray, especially. I've been meaning to get more of this good OST.

4. Beck Mongolian Chop Squad - Compared to all the other series I've been into, Beck is a damn good exception. I love good rock music like whoa and some of the characters are so realistically fun to watch. The songs, of COURSE the songs, are so good. "Face" and "Moon on the Water" are beautiful. Most of the soundtrack is pretty fun to listen to.

5. RahXephon - I guess, with RahXephon being the very first more serious and mature anime I've ever got into, I've GOT to include this series. The sci-fi story is pretty much mind blowing. Both the mecha AND the characters themselves are very interesting. The whole aura of mystery of the girl in the yellow dress (Ayato's childhood sweetheart) and Haruka's deep affections for the kid also got me hooked. Oh, and the Dolems' eerie singing; that's pretty cool too. The OST, what I have of it, is pretty good.

Gintama: The HILARITY is un-mached for me with this show, it's edgy, crude at times, random, non-sequitur, out there, obvious, blatant, obscure and then it turns around and makes fun of everything it is and isn't. It knows it's flaws and it's strengths and proceeds to shake hands with it with a joy buzzer. Not to mention the drama and action in some arcs is just epic, the characters are multi-dimensional, but at the same time, stereotypical in their own way (which the show makes fun of)

Durarara!!: The entire idea is pretty unconventional and the characters all mean something. It's hard to tell who the story is really about and the deeper you get into it, the more and more it draws you in, similar to Ikebukuro in the story. The characters are top-notch for me, each with their own quirks and even the characters I hate seem to surprise me at times, making them not boring, even if I hate them. + Izaya ... just Izaya.

Soul Eater: I love the art style in this one. It's anime, but it's so different in ways. The story is interesting and encaptures you in a world you'd never thought of. The idea is solid and even though it goes through the process of fighting small baddies to ultimately take down the big baddie, the process is enjoyable, the characters are all awesome (Soul, Death the Kidd, Professor Stein, Chrona, Shinigami-sama etc) and the anime has some surprisingly well written humor and dramatic moments.

Kuroshitsuji I-II: I loved both seasons. The premise and idea aren't the most intriguing I've ever come across, but the art and style make up for what the plot at times lacks. Ciel is an ass, but a lovable one when you know where he's coming from. I loved the twists this series brought and how awesome Sebastian is (Hilarity, coming from a soul eating, serious, non-sensical demon? That's something worth admiring that it was even done that well, oh, Sebby, you and your cats) the rest of the cast is memorable as well (Am I the only one who was both creeped out by, but really loved Drocell?) The second season brings a new flavor as well, I initially hated Alois, but as time went on, I grew to love and feel sorry for him. I really liked the twist, actually, it wasn't brilliant, but at the same time, you don't totally see it coming. Sometimes sheer brilliance isn't needed because it makes it more realistic in the end.

My last one isn't decided, but I would say it's probably the Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei series for it's beyond out there jokes, references and basic premise Or XxxHOLiC for the touch of mystery, horror, intrigue, hilarity and over all story that just made me watch it again and again.

Also, Naruto Shippuden might be a fifth fave, if it weren't for all the fillers. Really though, the story is very good, even though the over all idea is quite simple, they really take a powerful/emotional approach to the challenges the characters face.

1) Inuyasha: The story nor the characters are THAT great really but somehow I really enjoy it, I mean, It was the first anime I saw that I was aware of being and anime so I guess it just has a special place for me. Besides, I love Inuyasha xD
2) Rurouni Kenshin: I love the story and Kenshin is a great main character. I really like the characters design and the fact that, somehow, is like a historical kind of anime (I like that kind of shit)
3) Ouran High School Host Club: Best parody of shoujos cliches EVER, it's just hilarious!
4) Naruto: What can I say? I just love the stupid colorblind ninja. Nah, besides I think the story is really cool, shame fucking Pierrot made the anime go to waste -like that -.-
5) Nodame Cantabile: Although the only developed characters are the main ones, I still love this anime and it's story, I think it's quite believable (at the extent an anime can be). I have to say Nodame is my favourite female character for sure.

1. Hetalia-it's funny, the characters are likeable, worth watching in English, and so many other reasons but the most important......PASTA!!!

2. Durarara-Okay so I watched it when it first aired on Adult Swim but I got into it and well I like Shizuo and Izaya, the action, the drama, and all the twists and turns it has.

3. Fullmetal Alchemist-This series has plenty of action, comedy, drama, and the ending was bittersweet which was a good thing for this series.

4. Ouran High School Host Club-It's funny, has fanservice, and well it's just an enjoyable anime.

5. Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni-There's blood, death, plenty of mystery, as well as curiosity.

The story of this won out above all. It's animation isn't the greatest, but it's good for its time, and I have been just entranced by this story ever since I first watched it.

2. Serial Experiments Lain
This series was gory, but it did so in a more mature and realistic way. I loved that there weren't unnecessary sound effects and battle music and such. Lain was Lain. It had amazing animation (in my opinion) and a great, slightly more complex story.

3. Pandora Hearts
Love the story and the animation, but I prefer the manga. Most of all, I love Elliot and Leo.

4. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
The story in this was so amazing, as was the animation. It was rather complex with interesting theories. Also, the dub didn't suck. That's a first lol

5. Full Metal Alchemist
I have other animes that I want to put in this slot, but I can't remember the names, so this will do. I enjoy FMA (Brotherhood more than the original) for its story and characters. I especially love the incorporation of the sins, but it got a little too out there at the end for me. It went to the deep end of fantasy... a bit deeper than I usually prefer those types of stories. Nonetheless, it was a good anime.

1.One Piece- This anime was the very first one I have ever seen and I'm still really hooked on to it! It does have a very interesting storyline which is quite original (if i do say so myself)

2.Detective Conan- Ran and Shinichi's love for each other is so cute <3 (and depressing at times)

3.DuRaRaRa!- My favorite part when watching DRRR! is when Shizuo and Izaya fight! <3

4.Naruto- The deep sentimental story going on is touching and at times when it's not serious, it's very funny
5.Vampire Knight- I loved this anime it was one of the first I've ever seen! Though, I still kind of hate how season 2 ended in such a cliff-hanger!

Spoiler alert... just saying.

1. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood - I couldn't ask for a better storyline. And I'm a sucker for good storylines and twists. There wasn't an episode where I lost interest and this anime had almost everything I wanted. Good storyline, awesome music, best character development, funny humor, lots of moral lessons and a little bit of romance.

2. Code Geass - the reason why, since then, I've loved shameless smartass characters like Lelouch. To me, the best part in the anime was when Lelouch and Suzaku teamed up towards the end. And Lelouch dying was the worst tearjerker I've ever had since kindergarten.

3. Death Note - the rivalry between Light and L was incomparable to any other anime I've seen. But after L died, the series was just uninteresting. I would have preferred the ending to have L figure out that Light was Kira by using the Death Note---which means L dies too. Just like how the movie ended.

4. Hikaru no Go - made me love Go to the point where I play this board game everyday. But when they took Sai away, those episodes were just horrible and a complete waste of time. It ended too soon. The rivalry between Hikaru and Touya, for me, was unresolved.

5. Ouran High School Host Club - this was fucking hilarious is all I can say. It's the best bishounen anime I've ever seen and a new season would be the best birthday gift ever. Doubt it's going to happen though.

1. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time - I really can't get over with the ending. Chiaki and Makoto should have been together. (T~T)

Durarara!!, then Death Note.....then I don't really care, I only really liked these 2 over all of theses other ones....

This isn't really the order since I like them all almost the same.
1. Rurouni Kenshin-All the characters are so well done and the storyline (especially season 2) is just plain great.

2. Darker Than Black-I really liked the story and I loved Hei and November 11. So yes, a bit more shallow...but oh well.

3. Bleach-Seasons 1-3 mostly. So many cool characters and seriously screwing with my head with some of them. And then it just keeps going which kinda sucks.

4. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood-this has an amazing plot. I also liked the original (especially how it introduces Hughes since he is my favorite) but this followed the manga which I also read.

5. Gundam 00-Another amazing storyline. Plus Allelujah is amazing!

I'm pretty bad at choosing favorites so Durarara may be in there actually, I just finished it too :) And I didn't include movies cuz I feel their different entirely. Also I love shoujo in general, but usually I stick to the manga for those.

Fullmetal Alchemist/FUllmetal Alchemist Brotherhood: Great story, Great animation, and the characters were all so well done and the seemed so human
Baccano!: It was confusing and messed up,but it just worked. And the animation was great. Also, who wouldn't love Isaac and Miria?
Durarara!!: It took a typical setting, but the story was so unique, and unlike any other anime. Plus, like FMA and FMAB, the characters felt so real and well done.
Gurren Lagann: It's rididculous and uses just about every cliche of shonen anime ever, but it's so cool and epic that you just have to like it. And Kamina is awesome.
Trigun: Not far into it at all, but who cares It's awesome.

After 2 years, there has been a couple changes with my list (even though my 5th favorite shouldnt have counted because it wasn't even an anime at that time).

Very thought-provoking and makes you question the real difference between good and evil among other things.

4. Blue Exorcist

The anime strayed from the manga after a while, which upset me, but still a pretty good anime.

5. Soul Eater

I love this anime a lot but hate how it's gone to the weeaboos... -.-

Top 5 Shoujo/Romance (romance meaning the genre, it doesn't have to be just shojo):

1. Kaichou wa Maid-sama!

This is a great romantic comedy with a strong female character, which is what I always look for in a great shojo. I recommend it to anyone who likes a good laugh and a short-ish anime.

2. Durarara!!

It's actually a shonen, but there IS a lot of romance in this anime. Besides the romantic things (such as Shinra and Celty) on the side, the anime has a very good plot and I really want a second season. It's incredible how much I can relate to some of the characters' problems.

3. Sword Art Online

I'll admit, it's not primarily a romance story, but when *spoiler* Kirito and Asuna get together, I was a bit pleased. Besides that, the storyline is fantastic and fast-paced. It wasn't called the "Best Anime of 2012" for nothing.

4. Steins; Gate

Again, not a shojo or too focused on the romance, but the romance they did have was very well done. The series itself is very interesting and makes you think about how time travel would work.

5. Angel Beats!

This anime was very touching and focused on a lot of issues. There wasn't much romance in the beginning, but when it did move to that aspect of it, it was very moving and nearly made me cry.

2. Berserk, the story and the characters are both very interesting, and it really makes you think

4. Bakuman- it's hilarious, equal part realistic and idealistic, and it's very motivating to watch
5. it's a tie between Death Note(because of the mind games) and Shigurui( because it's practically art)

Welcome To The NHK- I dunno why, but this series was just...deep? I felt a strong connection to it and LOVE Misaki. A great series, tho I never would have imagined so just from the description.
Clannad series- The ending of the movie made me cry; THAT is an accomplishment. I just loved the whole story. Beautifully done.
Air Gear- SHITTY ending (no closure whatsoever)but I loved the action and fun in this series. Then again I'm a big Jet Set Radio and skating fan so what can I say.
Dusk Maiden of Amnesia- I am a sucker for romantic highschool comedies and the paranormal. This show met all my hopes and expectations with flying colors. I was on the verge of tears in the last episode but that final moment healed my heart hehe.
Listen To Me Girls, I Am Your Father- Wasn't expecting such beautiful feels from this. Its a great piece of evidence that you can't judge a book by its cover. Such a cute series.

1. Fullmetal Alchemist- The story telling in this show is just BEAUTIFUL! There is not a second of this show that is (in my opinion) wasted.
2. Baccano!- One of the best casts in any anime EVER! Brilliant soundtrack, gorgeous animation and one of the best dubs in the history of dubbing.
3. Cowboy Bebop- So close to perfect in every way! I can't think of anything in this show that is flawed!
4. Stein's;gate- BRILLIANT time travel story with one of the best love stories in anime.
5. Ouran high school host club- One of the funniest shows I've ever seen that still manages to do drama well. A little cheezy, but still well done.

1. durarara-intresting plot and good character devolpement, I mostly love Izaya Orihara and my friend loves Shizuo so we always to prove who is better.
2.fairy tale- I just love the plot and characters.
3.Black Butler- I sometimes cosplay as ciel and I love the whole entire anime as a whole.
4.Hetalia- I love this anime and it got me intrested in history and geography.
5. Death Note- there is no possible way to explain why I love this anime.

1)The World God Only Knows- I liked The gaming aspect and the storyline. 2) Witch Craft Works- I was interested in the aspect of magic and it's a 2014 anime.
3) GoSick- I watched a few episodes of this anime and liked the fact that it was a mystery genre
4) Clannad- The feels while watching it.
5) Attack on Titan

1. Durarara!! - This show holds a special place in my heart. While I was always only an on-and-off anime fan, this show is what introduced me to the rich variety of anime that's out there. I love the animation and the visuals, and love how the focus on character relationships makes this story simple yet gripping. Did I mention the amazing soundtrack yet?

2. Nana - I didn't think I was going to like this one, and the first few episodes were proving me right. Still I inched forward into the series, and found a wealth of character development and a sense of realism in every character. The first half was something of a grind, but the brilliant second half had me totally hooked through and through.

3. Ouran High School Host Club - Need I explain this one? Didn't think so.

4. Madoka Magika - This is one of the few shows that got me to care about a characters death. This anime gets what many don't: How to be a tragedy. I found myself getting a touch emotional on more than one occasion, and that ending didn't help either.

5. Mushi-Shi - This anime is beautifully dreamy and ethereal. A joy to lie down and watch while falling asleep to it's dream-like ambiance, or to watch in fascination of learning about each new mushi presented and how they have an affect on the humans and vice versa. Dat soundtrack.

This is difficult...but here are some~

1)Durarara!!-the story that this site was based off of, in case you didn't know the obvious. I'm absolutely speechless about the character design, and I can't even get over the storyline! In all honesty, I love the manga art, and the anime cast is lovely~

2)Angel Beats!-this anime will tear up your feels. Just a warning. Set in the high school of the afterlife, it's a 13-episode anime. Even though it's kind of short, it still has a big impact on your emotions..and although after watching the first episode, you'll probably be extremely confused, but please don't stop watching it and continue! It's a really well done anime!

3)Kyoukai no Kanata (Beyond the Boundary)-this anime is actually fairly recent, and tells the story of Spirit Warriors and Youmou. Also a fairly short anime, the characters are unique and distinct!

4)Toradora-this is an Toradorable anime that hosts the famous character Aisaka Taiga, commonly referred to as the queen of tsundere :P The storyline keeps you engaged and brings out various emotions in viewers throughout the anime~

5)Mirai Nikki (Future Diary)-the anime that hosts the famous character Yuno Gasai, commonly referred to as the queen of yandere XP Again, this anime also can have varying reactions, but I personally loved it, as it uniquely incorporates the use of cellphones in a way many people probably have never imagined..a great plot and character design~

BONUS: An anime under the name "Mekakucity Actors" will be released in April; keep an eye out for it! Just Google for what it is~

And if you want a real soul-crushing anime, watch Anohana. It tells the story of a guy who grieves over his childhood love's death many years back, but continues to suffer. Her ghost returns with the goal of granting her last wish and he sets out to grant just that. His other childhood friends also become involved and they send the ghost girl off to heaven. If you don't cry during this anime even ONCE, you are officially heartless. Just saying.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni -- Very thrilling, beautiful story. Many have called it an emotional rollercoaster, and I agree.

Elfen Lied -- Just about the same reasons as Higurashi. Also, it's something I loved as a kid.

Air -- Along with Elfen Lied, one of my first anime. I don't think there are any other anime that've made me cry like this one, but I do cry too easily when it comes to dramatic and emotional scenes...

Code Geass -- Brilliant, much? Almost perfect, really. r2 really screwed with me-- at the end, I mean. And mecha are always nice.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica -- Episode 3 left me broken. I don't know why...I've seen worse, but just...damn. Like all of my top five, I loved the characters. The third movie is the greatest movie I've seen yet. I just love 'soul-crushing' endings.

...and as an honourable mention -- Love Live! School idol project.
I found it to be a very touching anime at points. The music was also a plus.

Hm, limiting my selection to one of the four main japanese culture-based media forms made it slightly awkward. In no particular order:
-GJ-bu [Very light hearted SoL, good for the soul.]
-Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's [Peak of the series, though the movie was amazing.]
-Darker than Black S1 [Action packed with the right balance of everything. Also left a nice amount of things to the viewer to interpret.]
-Bakemonogatari [That art style and all the small imagery was great.
-Dog Days [Again, another warmhearted series.]

1. Psycho Pass
- Not only are the characters beyond amazing (oh gosh the character development is 10/10), I really love the plot of living in a dystopia and seeing how the community, especially the police react. I also like going through the episodes and watching them solve the crimes, I just find mysteries and crimes intriguing.

2. Fate/Zero
- Amazing animation, amazing story, and a bunch of characters you really can't help but root for throughout the Holy Grail War, even if you have an idea of who's going to be the last people standing.

3. Monogatari Series
- Really just a fun show full of fun characters. Senjougahara is lovely, and is probably my favorite female character of all time. Really it comes down to how much you like the characters, and I think I only disliked one throughout the whole series.

4. Steins; Gate
- I think S;G was my third anime, but it was the first with a really intricate plot. Although slow at the beginning, the pace really picks up. I remember spending the entire night staying up until 4:00AM to finish it. Really a lovely piece of animation that will always hold a spot in my top 5.

5. Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun
- The first comedy show that actually had me bursting out into a real laugh. After seeing the same jokes in anime over & over & over again, they start to become unfunny and predictable. But this show focuses on unpredictability, making it 100x funnier to me. The jokes are all fresh jokes that I've never seen before, so thank you GSNK.

1. Pandora Hearts - I love the mistery and everytime you get new information you are even more confused. Also it is cute and funny at times, but reading the mange it will tear your heart apart because of all the despair in the end.

2. K Project - I just love every character and the setting. I'm excited for the new season this year.

3. Durarara - A city full of weird people and wonders, not focussing on only one character but the interactions between them. But i don't think i have to explain any further, since anyone here should know it.

4. Code Geass - Lelouch is awesome.

5. Akame ga kill - It's sad and bloody but the characters are still joyful and give me strenght even during those times. There are way too many deaths, but that gives the anime a bitter sweet feeling.

4. Death Note (Do I "Need" to describe? I love over-intellegent people)
5. Mirai Nikki (it has a Survival-Games feeling some amazing people and it's basically AWESOME)

1. Death Note- I have Asperger's Syndrome so L and Near are very relatable characters. I also enjoy the Psychological suspense of the series.

2. Ansatsu Kyoushitsu- Karma is like the ultimate tsundere.

3. Naruto- I grew up watching it and it's still ongoing. Also Shino is amazing.

4. Parasyte- Parasetic beings that can possess humans and eat people, need I say more?

5. 07 Ghost- I like the lore/military/sci-fi/exorsist feel to it
