I really dig this album by Coltrane, its very well balanced and is a great listen. I hate when people say "RIP Coltrane" he isn't dead, his music lives on forever.

Jazz is pretty amorphous, as far as terms or genres go.

That aside, I'm a sucker for swing a la Glenn Miller, and cool jazz with and wihout lyrics - artists like Chet Baker, and Miles Davis. I find I tend to prefer the more melancholic sorts of jazz (though there are some notable exceptions), like Mal Waldron, some Bill Evans, or the Lady herself - Billie Holliday.

> Specifically her penultimate album, Lady in Satin - it's one of my favorite albums (not just jazz albums) - every song just oozes melancholy and loneliness, such that lyrics that were ostensibly written as a love song can sound embittered and defeated.

(Not to mention other vocalists like Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald, or contemporary jazz musicians/composers like the great Yoko Kanno)
