Hi! My friend is kinda suffering from severe depression, and I have no idea on how to help him. When I am in distress, he sends me some songs for comfort. Please help me make a playlist for him. Please! (I am desperate) ----Japanese songs are also welcome

An obvious one is Loose Lips by Kimya Dawson, but here are some other ones that might suit the need:

Sufjan Stevens – Futile Devices
Kings of Convenience – Winning a Battle, Losing the War
Bibio – The Palm of Your Wave
Frente – Bizzare Love Triangle
Belle & Sebastian – Piazza, New York Catcher
Pretty much any version of the song ‘Hallelujah’

A personal favourite and go-to song when I’m in a shitty way is ‘In the Aeroplane over the Sea’ by Neutral Milk Hotel – the song and the album it’s off - and since you mentioned it Japanese music, the song Years by サカナクション (Sakanaction) may also be appreciated

Music is subjective, so YMMV

Oh man, if we're talking melancholy jazz, Mal Waldron's 'Left Alone' is superb, especially when listened to alone or at night with ambient rain noise.

The version of 'In a Sentimental Mood' that Ellington and Coltrane did together, as well as some Chet Baker tunes like 'My Funny Valentine' (both the instrumental and vocal versions) may also suit the need/desire

But, as I see it, melancholy jazz is best for rumination and finding a kind of bizarre peace in hitting or nearing bottom (at least in my opinion) - while the songs I originally recommended are more suited to comforting and calming, which I prefer to more saccharine or disingenuously happy tunes in times like that. (I'd rather be calm than pretend to be happy in that case, but I cannot say the same for your friend.)
