The Black Keys are an Ohio based, American, blues-rock band formed in 2001. The band consists of two members, Dan Auberach, the guitarist, vocalist and producer, and Patrick Carney who plays the drums and percussion. They formed the band after meeting each other in College, then within a year they had dropped out and started recording. Originally the band struggled with success, recording albums in their friends basements and self producing. With the revival of the garage rock genre, however, The Black Keys had a big breakthrough.
Their sound varies heavily from album to album, but mostly fits into the category of blues mixed with some alt-rock. They are characterized mainly by their distinctively catchy guitar rifts, which hold a place in most songs. As time has gone on, The Black Key's sound has become more complex, with more money to produce and more creative licence to input.
Their breakthrough was the 2010 release 'Brothers', with the album being nominated and winning for the Grammy of 'Best Alternative Album', and their single for 'Best Rock Performance by a Group or Duo' and 'Best Rock Song'. Their next album, 'El Camino', followed up on the success with 3 Grammy awards, winning 'Best Rock Album', 'Producer of the Year', and a nomination for 'Best Album'.
Personally, I love these guys. Their music varies hugely from the first album to the most recent but they stay consistent all the way through. The singer, Auberach, has a great voice and particularly excels at blues. Check out their songs 'Lonely Boy' or 'Howlin' For You' for starters if you are interested in giving them a look at.
