30 Seconds To Mars is an American rock band from Los Angeles, California. Formed in 1998, the band went through a few different lineups, but is now Jared Leto (vocals, guitar), Shannon Leto (drums), and Tomo Miličević (guitar). Jared and Tomo provide bass in studio and various musicians fill in live.
Their sound has drastically changed over the course of their three albums. Their self-titled debut was very space rock-y, heavily distorted, and dense. It could also be considered prog rock or prog metal, and initially it didn't sell well. In 2005, the band released their follow-up A Beautiful Lie, which blasted the group into the mainstream due to the success of singles "A Beautiful Lie," "Attack," "From Yesterday," and "The Kill (Bury Me)". This album took a much more catchy and light direction compared to its predecessor, and 30 Seconds To Mars received heavy airplay and experienced a huge boost in popularity. In 2009, the band released their third album This Is War, featuring another huge hit single; "Kings and Queens". This album featured a much more centralized concept theme like their first album, and mashed the best bits of both previous albums together to create an oddly successful mix of progressive music and radio-hit vocals, along with lots and lots and lots of gang choruses/crowd chants.
Since frontman Jared Leto is also an actor (of "Requiem For A Dream" fame among others), the group's music videos are often beautiful and stunning, wonderful to watch, and grandiose and full, more like short-films than many other bands music videos. Going under the pseudonym Bartholemew Cubbins, he directs almost all of (if not all of) the band's video works, and the group is scheduled to release a DVD entitled Artifact either this year or next highlighting the making of This Is War.
30 Seconds To Mars' lyrics range from space-themed and antique sounding yet understandable, to simple and concise yet effective. Their fan group "Echelon" is greatly influenced from their work, and each release by the band includes inside references and special "secrets." The band's logos have a lot to do with it....I think. To be honest, I don't even know. You'll see what I mean.
I have no doubts a few of you guys know of this band, but they're truly one of those few mainstream groups whose albums are fully enthralling to listen to. Many mainstream rock groups go out with the aim of making a huge hit single or two and having the rest of the album play backup. These guys just make albums and the songs happen to be fucking monstrous hits. I personally prefer their two concept albums to A Beautiful Lie, but everyone has their own preference. I totally recommend this band to mainstream kids looking for something bigger, and for progheads looking for something simpler. They combine the best of both worlds, and they do a fantastic job at it time and time again.

I don't usually listen to rock bands and whatnot, but I heard one of their song.. Hurricane, I think it was and I enjoyed it a lot.
