Just because you can play one instrument doesn't mean that you can't play another one. I play bass, and guitar :/
The choice is yours. If you really feel that you want to learn guitar, and go for it. If not, then look at it some more until you decide.
As for choosing them, it depends on what type of guitar:
Classical Guitars (nylon strings), and acoustics are harder to learn than electric guitars, but oh do they sound beautiful if played right. They are also lighter, and don't need an amp, so you can easily take them anywhere.
Electric Guitars are, well, electric guitars! What's not to like about them?
as for brands, I'm not an expert, but I do know that Squires, and epiphones make good starters (or intermediate) guitars. They are basically the poor man's fender/les paul. Ibanez guitars are also good.
Also, you should probably buy your guitar based on what music you wish to play (I play all types of music, so I go electric, and acoustic).
