Earth Hour (4)

Tonight, our planet will collaborate with each another by turning off all electrical appliances from 20:30 to 21:30. By doing so, we will be saving power, therefore reducing the amount of pollution we produce.
But what if people don't participate? Why might people decide not to participate? How would turning off our electrical appliances help stop global warming?
I thought we might have discussions about this. So how about it? Will you participate in this effort to save energy?

Well, shit... I guess I missed earth hour then. Mostly because I forgot about it, and I'm at this huge LAN-party (RogaHack). Earth hour has pretty much died out here in Rogaland, Norway. :/

My issue with Earth Hour is that it's slactivism and the person who pioneered it is a massive hypocrite. Turning off your lights for one hour once a year has a pretty negligible effect. What you want is long term savings and the best way is to overhaul the entire electrical infrastructure.

As I've said continuously on the BBS, the best way to do that is to replace all lightbulbs you have with LED ones, because that can cut electricity use by up to 80%. And given that a BR30 bulb (recessed lighting) is $12, an A19 bulb (lamps) is $7, and a general purpose bulb is $9, and that they last TWENTY-TWO YEARS, there is no reason NOT to do this.
