the media and its perks (11)

The media, both television and internet has been flooded with violent images. Two wars are raging on our planet and there is a very real Ebola infection spreading throughout Africa with cases found in the US. Not to mention multiple terrorist attacks around the globe,my question. Is the world populated by evil doers and horrible tragedy or is it that the media brings these acts to our attention Making it appear as though there is a constant stream of bad things happening to people all over the world?

I've always thought that the good and bad in the world is pretty balanced. We tend to hear about the bad stuff a lot more, though. I guess it kinda like, the bad stuff is big an chunky (if that makes any sense whatsoever) but the good stuff is smaller so it adds up over time. I don't know why they usually talk about the bad stuff in the news, though; although they do talk about good things.

The media is more inclined to show bad things because it helps get more viewers.

The amount of "bad" people in the world is much smaller than the amount of what we call "good" people. Just think about your city, how many people there are actually killers and robbers and etc? Certainly a very small percentage.
We have this idea that the world is really violent and everybody wants to kill us, but it's not like that (unless you live in a war zone, like Gaza, and even there it's not like that).

Well my country is right next the borders of Gaza, and right now it's a huge mess, murder, kidnapping, bombing... i'll leave it to your imagination, so most of the stuff that happen here is bad stuff, and since the situation of the country is in danger, all the media does is show us some pretty awful things (soldier heads cut off, them being killed...) so yeah it's only bad stuff I don't see what kind of good things they can air right now

I'm sorry to hear about your situation, the things you said are pretty horrible.

but now my second question..could good news help alleviate some of the lesser worries and fears.

There's a reason for 'Smile, the world isn't as bad as you think it is.'ยจ

The main reason the news focus on the bad stuff is that it sells more. However, if they had happy news every now and then, it would probably help alleviate the lesser worries and fears. However, it should probably be major happy news, and not small news. Because if it's small news, it just seems stupid.

An example of small news is in my local newspaper. They had on top of their webpage a story about a girl who got her teddybear back thanks to the cruise ship company being willing to send it to her.

The media is generally quite biased
And, as said by the person above, the media does twist things to make them more dramatic and newsworthy
Lots of things in the world are positive, but those sorts of things aren't featured in the news, because acts of kindness are small, but still wonderful.
While evil and cruel things are not too common, they attract a lot of attention simply because they are more interesting, or are thought of as more interesting

I've heard that humans are more drawn to negative things than positive. Which is why the media mostly shows the worst in things because those are what interest people. They show achievements, but not often. Just like @ChocolateSquirrel said they balance and the good things build up while the bad is in chunks.
