Brooklyn Nine-Nine is an American comedy show created by Dan Goor and Michael Schur. The show revolves around the Brooklyn Nine-Nine police precinct, and their new captain. Starring Andy Samberg, Stephanie Beatriz, Terry Crew, Andre Braugher, Melissa Fumero, Chelsea Peretti and Joe Lo Truglio, the show premiered in 2013, with its third season planned to begin airing later this year.
Created by some of the people behind
The Office and
Parks and Recreation, this show is another one of those light-hearted single-camera-mockumentary-influenced comedies that's simultaneously addictive and easy to watch. A show, other than
The Office and
Parks and Recreation - which I haven't actually seen yet but is apparently similar - that I could compare this too in terms of comedy is probably
Modern Family, in terms of format and type of humour. It just has that same sarcastic, bemused look at life that all those shows have, with its focus on police work and work-life. It's definitely far from realistic, but its a refreshing change from the regular representations of police you see on TV.
Also it's hilarious. Like, laugh out loud funny. Ensemble comedy though it is, and is increasibly becoming, the show is centred on Andy Samberg's character Dt. Peratla. Samberg, who some of you might remember from comedy hip hop group
The Lonely Island and, to a lesser degree, some shitty movies like
That's My Boy, really shines here, being the perfect mix of quick-fire wit, and physical comedy. Just check out this
clip and tell me it doesn't make you smile a little. It's even better in context.
The supporting cast are all pretty great as well, particularly Terry Crews, Stephanie Beatriz, and Joe Lo Trugilo, and the writing is solid throughout. It's a show that I'd recommend to most people, I think it's appeal is undeniably universal.
Go check it out.
