Building a WISP (4)

Hello,
I live in a rural area where internet is extreamly limited, there's only one ISP for the area and to sum it up, they suck.
The neighborhood would like another option but none are offered.
I work in tech support and have been elected to come up with a solution. My knowledge is limited on servers and networks. Wondering if anyone out there has experience in these fields and would be willing to lend a hand and discuss servers and the creation of a wireless internet service provider.
Thanx,
-Cixx

Well if you're planning on become the internet service provider for your local area.. For starters you're going to need to find a warehouse / building to house your data center.

Second you'll need to purchase and install UPS units and HVAC units. Those are needed when your areas power is interrupted by a power outage. HVAC keeps the data center cool as you know, heat generated by equipment can damage it.

Obtain a peering arrangment with one or two upstream ISP's. Your ISP will have its own connection(s) to the Internet via peering arrangements. Go with at least two, though 5 for the best speed, connectivity and reliability.

Decide on which hardware you'll be using and obtain some high speed fiber optic lines from the local telecommunications utility.

Then install and configure enterprise grade routers, switches, and computers. Don't go the cheap route for this (quality grade equipment == quality grade services).

Check with the FCC for obtaining a license for providing internet services.

Hello Sirius,
Thank you for your response.
The current ISP is run through our telecommunication company.
They are the only option and the neighbors don't want to use them.
We were also considering setting up our own satnet, but like with WISP I don't know much about how to set something like that up.
Do you think satnet would be easier for us to handle?

Come on, people in rural areas had successfully set up their own ISP, and installed the fiber network for that.

Just find someone in your community to help you.

In which country do you live ?
