Buying a tablet (13)

1 Name: Loerpiou : 2016-12-28 16:10 ID:CYj3aafr [Del]

Hey guys, I'm looking to buy a tablet and was wondering if you could give me some advices and suggestions. I'd use it for school, like taking notes, surfing on the web, youtube, etc. (so no games). I'd also need it to be easily transportable, so something aroung 8 or 9 inch max. Personally I think for the way I want to use it, a Windows tablet would be better but android's got that Yoga tab 3 that's cheap and seems good (cause yea, I don't have all the big budget either, maybe 150-250 USD, could go a lil higher but not too much). What do you guys think?

I prefer having PCs for that.
Writing on a tablet usually slow and uncomfortable, so I would hardly recommend you a tablet for your usage.
Also, tablet versions of M$ office and Libre Office are very limited.

The one assets of tablets is their battery time.
Can you charge your device at school ?

And what do you do at school ?

Maths ? Languages ? Science ?,... ?

>>2 yea, most classes have power sockets, often at the back. I have a PC at home, but it would be useful to have a tablet at school (typing is always faster than writing by hand after all, and it would allow me to work easily on projects without having to go back home).

>>3 Math, languages, science yea, but also philosophy, psychology and many other subjects. I know a tablet wouldn't be the best for taking notes when it comes to stuff like science, for exemple, but for most of my subjects, it would be useful

Maths and science are not an easy thing on PC/tablet, since you need plenty of sketches and formula.

For orther lessons, I'd recommend a laptop over a tablet, yet a sheet of paper is the best.

What do you do at school ?
I'm in an engineering school, and every student use paper. However, most in the nearby law school use PCs (and not tablets)

IMO, buying a tablet is likely to be a waste of money. Excepted in some schools, that's not likely to be really useful, nor convenient.

Or don't you have any laptop, for trial ?

If its old or Windows is slow, just install Linux with a few useful programs. It'll be enough for word processing.

And a real PC, with a neat keyboard and without a shiny screen, and orientable screen isvthge best.

>>6 I'm in college with a general, pre-university degree (I live in Canada) and as for the laptop, I feel like it would often be too massive and big, so I'd preffer to just use a tablet with a bluetooth keyboard (I guess I should've specified that final part in the original part since it may have been a little confusing, sorry).

I tested this at the beginning of the year, then I came back to paper.

Writing is slow, going back and forth in your notes too, that's more difficult to change colour and font effects on a tablet.
And Word is very limited on tablets.

You should try, if you feel you need it, but don't already buy a device, there's a 90% chance it'll be a waste of money.

(I also had a physical keyboard. But to fit a tablet size, keys were tiny, and sometimes misplaced IMO)

>>9 ok, I guess I'll give it a second thought after all. But if I had to try one, what would you suggest me?

Just thought about it, but do you think a chromebook would be a good option for what I'm looking? And if so, which one do you think would be the best choice?

Chromebooks are heavily reliant on the Internet, aren't they ? That's not wise in a school.

And don't buy anything, until you will have tested taking lessons on a device.
Even if its a bit heavier, bring your laptop at school, at first.
