Need Help - Linux (11)

1 Name: Tyberfen!V6lnDGEkTU : 2016-10-21 08:51 ID:P8tSbrW+ [Del]

I want to change my System to Linux. Anyone out there who can recommend me a good version of it and tell me how to install it properly?

(1) good version : try several distributions, and choose the one you prefer and that work the best.

- Ubuntu works well, but Canonical is diverging from Linux aim. It's a kind of "Windows of Linux" or "the Windows for poors".

- Fedora is great for begginers, and had a good compatibility with my computer.

- Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu, and also target new Linux users.

- Mageia could also be ok,
... (I let you run a search)

(2) How to install it properlly :

- Decide if you want a dual boot or only Linux.
I made my first install on an hard drive that I picked up on another computer, so that I don't damage anything. It was slower, but easier. That won't be convenient if you have a laptop and you plan to still use Windows, though.

- anyway, give Linux enough space

- That's better to create segregated partitions to separate the system files and your own files. This way, you will be able to make a new installation and keep your data.

--mount your efi partion as /boot/efi
--use a /boot/efi partition for system image (I'll tell you later what room it should worth)
--a / partition is mandatory.
-- and a /home partition is convenient.
--a Swap partiton, with the same capacity as your RAM.
--maybe a shared partition with Windows

-Finally, that's great to ask Linux to cipher your Linux partition. It will require a password at startup, but that's really great on security purposes.

But since it'll look difficult (is is not, actually since you're guided by the GUI during installation process), feel free to post questions on this board.

Or to ask for a talk over the internet.

Anyway, what is your PC like, exactly ?

Nice.

The best is the PC, the worse it is with Linux.

Did you try to use Live USB/CDs ?

From what I've heard the best ones are:
Mint; CubeOS; And if you're up for the challenge, archlinux

Sorry, Qubes OS*

>>7 Idk Qubes OS.

But ArchLinux is for poeple who are already really good at Linux.

>>1 Don't focus too much on selecting a distribution. Anyway, if you install the stuff properly (with a separate /home partition), you will be able to change this distribution very easilly.
