Opinions on Windows 10 (15)

Hiya~ I looked through the threads, but couldn't seem to find a similar thread! I was wondering, what is your guys' opinion? Do you like the new windows? What do you think is good/bad?

So to start off; I don't really like it too much. There are far too many built-in apps, which is why I usually go with Microsoft instead of Apple. Also, I REALLY don't like how much data it tries to mine from you. Another reason I don't like apple.

On the plus side, it's more functional than Windows 8 (besides display crashes).

Windows 10. Has anyone else noticed a pattern with Windows? Every two OS's is a good one. Windows 7 was good, Windows 8 was terrible, Windows 10 is good. I digress. Windows 10 is a very much needed overhaul on Windows 8. Personally, I love it. It's easier to use that Windows 7 in my opinion and it brought back the start menu and added functionality that Windows 8 lacked. Making it free for all 7 and 8 users was an incredible decision by Microsoft. Kudos to them for it. >>1 If you don't like the apps, then uninstall them; also, your post reads like you're critiquing OSX?

As for things that Windows 10 does wrong? It's slow at times and Internet Explorer still exists. Edge is barely an upgrade from IE. Cortana doesn't always react to your voice, even if you train her, and at times will open randomly. A host of apps that don't need to exist exist, such as a new Windows music app that doesn't replace Media Player but is instead intended to function like iTunes. The Settings app makes it occasionally hard to find settings, but honestly, in this day and age, who doesn't use Control Panel anyway, amirite? If you have a touchscreen, it is possible for drivers to fail (this happened to my sister's computer, but is fixable simply by restarting the laptop or tablet).

As for what it does right? It brought back the Windows button. Cortana adds additional functionality, gets to know your preferences, and will suggest restaurants and places to go based on those preferences. OneNote is seamlessly added to an Action Centre in the corner of the Taskbar. With one click, the Action Centre is open, and with a second, an new note in OneNote is open and ready for a grocery list, something to remember, or anything you need to write down. A News app is well done with a great UI and will refresh periodically, showing articles based on the preferences you selected when you set up the app and showing them in the order you ranked those preferences as; for instance, football related articles may be at number five for myself, local news at four, with fashion at number three and politics and world related news at one and two, respectively. The News app will then show political articles at the top, with world news following, then fashion, then local news and football. Windows 10 has an easy to use start menu, and easy to use settings menus. Virtual desktops are nice.

Overall, I'd give Windows 10 a 9/10. >>2 If it crashes a lot, and consistently, you may want to reinstall the OS.

>>3 I actually have installed most of them (through the command shell, because it doesn't allow you to using the control panel/settings app), but I find that they like to come back with the automatic updates. That being said, I'm not as tech savvy as I want to be, so I may be missing something. (And yes, Windows 10 reminds me of OSX because of the way in which you have to uninstall pre-installed software).

Windows 10 is Microsoft's attempt to be like Apple. There is a lot less you can customize. For starters you can't disable or uninstall the background apps in any easy way. Apps like people, maps, music, phone, etc. This is a huge set back by forcing Microsoft apps to be installed on all PC's with no uninstall or disable button. I had to use commands in powershell to uninstall them. I am frustrated because my laptop wouldn't work on battery without uninstalling them. This shows that the background apps can bog down the PC, which I want to use my system for what I want, not what Microsoft wants.

Edge is just an attempt to be Google Chrome as well.

Most of the OS is windows 8 integrated with windows 7 and made like Apple does it. I say that since if you get into the technical settings it just looks like windows 7 stuff with some things missing and different.

The only upside is that it doesn't crash as much in 4k, but it has been BSOD recently on some of my startups. Also DX12 is another feature that I think is only available in win10.

I used to love Microsoft, but it seems to me they are going in a direction that I don't like. They just seem to be mimicking everyone else, instead of doing their own thing.

Windows 10 is shit, Windows 7 is the shit. Case. Closed.

Eh, Windows 10 has its upsides and its drawbacks. I used 7 for years after XP (skipped vista) Then 8.1 for about a year or so. Honestly I preferred 8.1 (after proper configuration) over 7.

10 is essentially 8.1 but with the obnoxious crap removed. And some decent features added. The only real crappy things about 10 are the telemetry features(spying) and the forced updates. So windows 10 is pretty good altogether.

If you do go with windows 10, make sure its Pro, Enterprise, or Education Edition. These versions all give you more control of the OS to disable some of the bad stuff. while getting all of the good.

Just for the record, I'm installing Win7 onto a PC right now, and it's been fetching drivers and updates for four days now.

My gaming PC is Win10, I'm putting Win7 on another for older programs. But I also run Ubuntu on all of my laptops.

Bottom line, people should use the operating system that supports the programs they use most. For someone like me, sticking to one will always have it's limitations.

I never left Windows 7 as I preferred it on my main PC over Win10. Of the times I have used it I found it being on a small touchscreen laptop was fine as it was just for my studies and the interface was easier to use if I could just touch the tiles.
Out of curiosity would anyone recommend upgrading to Windows 10?

>>11 no I would not recommend it. The only upsides to me is 4k support and DX12.

Other than that win10 taxes the system a lot more than win7. You can manually uninstall a lot of the apps, but not all of them, like Cortana or onedrive. I'm gonna switch my laptop back to win7 due to win10 forcing updates on me, which causes me to manually force uninstall bs apps through powershell.

I also don't like win10. You can't delete all apps and it knwos everything about you. Big Brother...

1: You are paying to use THEIR service and agreeing to them using information collected from you in exchange for using their services.
As far as I am aware the data they collect shouldn't be that big of a deal anyway. I mean, even if they did collect every single piece of data from everyone's' computers that would be tons and tons of unimportant data they would have to go through in order to find any kind of important data you have hidden away right?

2.The only problem I have ever had since switching to windows 10 is that sometimes it wants to take forever to shutdown the computer.

>>13 Windows 10 is no more intrusive than Windows 7. Plus, compared to Google or Facebook, Windows is nothing. I love Google, but holy shit, their adds are unnerving. Mostly because they're very accurate and I often want the tings advertised to me...
