(Did you ever wash a road bike properly ? Sometimes you even have to remove the wheels to to that)

A lot of bookshelves have removable pegs. So they're already adjustable. You just have to clear the shelf first...

How about a Water Resistant Computer System Unit? These are usually on the floor, so that would provide some real protection and application.
How about a Box of Playing Cards that automatically shuffles them, possibly through a few switches being switched?
How about Solar Powered AA Batteries, or a Battery Recharger powered by a Hand Crank that tells you when the batteries are done charging by pushing the batteries out of the recharger, or simply releasing them from the machine?
Maybe a method for making laminated books more feasible, or another way of making books less damageable?

How about a spring assist pocket knife that has an extendable blade? It would be usefull in close encounters and defense. It also would have a "if you with me i will fuck you up." affect on agtackers or nuisances.

One of my college dorm mates and I are trying to design a more efficient wind generator so that when a string rain storm knocks out the power, we are generating backup power for the building. Why don't you have a go at that.
