Can a network remember passwords? (7)

1 Name: Endragon : 2015-05-20 12:47 ID:0MGfVU4u [Del]

First of all, I don't know that much about the internet and such

So, here's the situation. I'm right now staying at a host family for three days in England. So I went to check my bank account to see how much I spent that day, but then my friend got worried that the network at that house could remember that password and that they could hack my bank account. I don't really believe it but I'm still wondering. Is it possible for the network to remember passwords and such and Is it possible to use it to hack my account for example. Btw I was checking it through an app on my phone.

Well your password would have never been transmitted in plain text over the network and even if they where doing packet capture (a way of capturing a copy of everything going though a network) the password would be encrypted and in the middle of a bunch of garbage to make it hard to find so it would take a long time to get the password.

TL;DR your password is fine

Almost related, if someone types in their network password (for their WiFi) onto your computer, it is stored on your computer. And you can view it at any time with admin privileges. So, next time you ask someone for their WiFi password, and they want to type it in themselves so you can't see it, you'll know what's actually up.

Internet is scary.

You could redirect someones traffic to a fake page and the url would look exactly the same, even the page itself would look exactly like the real deal.
This is illegal though and would be easy to track back to that house if the appropriate methods were used and if the hacker made any mistakes or did not think far enough ahead.

>>5 I have an install of Kali, it's pretty much okay at best. It's convenient that all the tools are pre-installed, but it'd be better to just get a copy of Arch or something and get what you really need.

If there's a spyware in the router or a sniffer on the network that's possible, but this option is unlikely in a protected home network. (maybe with the moose worm for example).

Just pay attention that your computer is safe (no one goes to full-of-virus websites such as illegal downloading and porn website), that the anti-virus and firewall software, the system and the programs are up to date, and that the connection to the bank is encrypted (a lock should appear in your browser).
